Breast cancer detection using machine learning approaches: a comparative study

    Get PDF
As the cause of the breast cancer disease has not yet clearly identified and a method to prevent its occurrence has not yet been developed, its early detection has a significant role in enhancing survival rate. In fact, artificial intelligent approaches have been playing an important role to enhance the diagnosis process of breast cancer. This work has selected eight classification models that are mostly used to predict breast cancer to be under investigation. These classifiers include single and ensemble classifiers. A trusted dataset has been enhanced by applying five different feature selection methods to pick up only weighted features and to neglect others. Accordingly, a dataset of only 17 features has been developed. Based on our experimental work, three classifiers, multi-layer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM) and stack are competing with each other by attaining high classification accuracy compared to others. However, SVM is ranked on the top by obtaining an accuracy of 97.7% with classification errors of 0.029 false negative (FN) and 0.019 false positive (FP). Therefore, it is noteworthy to mention that SVM is the best classifier and it outperforms even the stack classier

Culturally-Aware Motivation for Smart Services: An Exploratory Study of the UAE

The adoption of smart services could be challenging despite the benefits they can offer in terms of ubiquity and intelligence. The main reason for that is the relatively difficult administration of the services on smart phones and the availability of other options including the in-person and desktop services. However, the design of smart services could be more proactive and attract users’ adoption through the use of persuasive and motivational techniques. These techniques should be culturally-sensitive. This paper reviews the use of Cialdini six principles of influence in the cultural context of UAE, and it assesses how they should be used to increase the adoption of smart services. As a method, we conducted in-depth interviews with ten experts in various domains; including marketing and customer services; in the UAE. We report on the potential and the adverse effects and identify context specific factors of the use of these principles in the context of the UAE aiming to give the management of software-based motivation a starting point for their design and evaluation

Design of an Intelligent Traffic Light Control System

    Get PDF
Today, the number of cars is rapidly increasing which creates a real traffic control problem. While the conventional traffic control systems are inconvenient to provide fast and fair solutions for the congestion problem. This research addresses the traffic control problem and hence proposes an intelligent traffic light control system. In particular, the proposed system senses the presence or absence of cars on each lane, and then estimates the time to open each lane, which is proportional to the number of cars on that lane. Practically, the system circuit has been printed on a board with three main components; namely pressure sensors, microcontroller, and traffic lights. Then a C program has been developed to enable the microcontroller for receiving inputs from sensors, calculating the times to open lanes and sending appropriate logic decisions to traffic light. The obtained results prove the accuracy and reliability of the system.    In addition to the practical test, the intelligent traffic light control system has been successfully simulated, where the simulation results are found to be the same as the calculated ones

Utilizing Steel Slag in the Removal of Suspended Solids from Dewatered Construction Water

Construction dewatering is an operation used to remove shallow groundwater that infiltrates construction sites. After recovering this water from the construction sites, the water is either discharged to the sea, injected in deep groundwater aquifers, or treated and reused in some other applications. However, municipal and industrial application of this water is unfeasible due to its poor quality. Thus, in this study, dewatered construction water is being treated utilizing waste steel slag in order to improve the quality of the water. The pH of the dewatered construction water used for this study was 7.59 and the average diameter of steel slag used was 425 nm. For coagulation, the impact of the mass of steel slag and the contact time on the quality of dewatered construction water were studied. By using 5gm/L of steel slag, more than 85% of the total suspended solids and turbidity were removed within 30 minutes. The authors would like to thank Qatar University for the financial support. In addition, the authors would like to thank Qatar Steel for the supply of the steel slag sample

BACKGROUND: A knowledge of chemical composition of food is the first essential in the quantitative study of human nutrition and in the dietary treatment of disease. One of the reasons for studying nutrition is to learn how to select meal that will enable to achieve and maintain good health. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to conduct approximate analysis for some types of food so as to  formulate adequate  meals for Sudanese children.  MATERIALS AND METHOD: A total of 300 children 3-5 years of age from Wad Medani locality, Gezira State, Sudan, were surveyed. The study was conducted during period from July 2014 to February 2015. Dietary data and eating habits of children were obtained by interviewing mothers about their children’s diet using pre-tested questionnaires. Analysis of the main food was carried out according to the protocols of AACC (1980) and AOAC (1975, 1984). RESULTS: The results showed that, all samples of food are relatively high in carbohydrate and low in protein and  fat content. Bearing in mind that all these types of stuff do not give a balanced diet therefore, two adequate meals were suggested. CONCLUSION:  It is important to add more ingredients to some of our traditional foods, to improve the nutritional values
