    In this paper, we apply a new method called Aboodh transform homotopy perturbation method (ATHPM) to solve nonlinear systems of partial differential equations. This method is a combination of the new integral transform “Aboodh transform” and the homotopy perturbation method. This method was found to be more effective and easy to solve linear and nonlinear differential equations.     Predicting optimal hematocrit in silico

    Optimal hematocrit HoH_o maximizes oxygen transport. In healthy humans, the average hematocrit HH is in the range of 40-45%\%, but it can significantly change in blood pathologies such as severe anemia (low HH) and polycythemia (high HH). Whether the hematocrit level in humans corresponds to the optimal one is a long standing physiological question. Here, using numerical simulations with the Lattice Boltzmann method and two mechanical models of the red blood cell (RBC) we predict the optimal hematocrit, and explore how altering the mechanical properties of RBCs affects HoH_o. We develop a simplified analytical theory that accounts for results obtained from numerical simulations and provides insight into the physical mechanisms determining HoH_o. Our numerical and analytical models can easily be modified to incorporate a wide range of mechanical properties of RBCs as well as other soft particles thereby providing means for the rational design of blood substitutes. Our work lays the foundations for systematic theoretical study of the optimal hematocrit and its link with pathological RBCs associated with various diseases (e.g. sickle cell anemia, diabetes mellitus, malaria, elliptocytosis)

    The Effect of absorbing sites on the one-dimensional cellular automaton traffic flow with open boundaries

    The effect of the absorbing sites with an absorbing rate ÎČ0\beta_{0}, in both one absorbing site (one way out) and two absorbing sites (two ways out) in a road, on the traffic flow phase transition is investigated using numerical simulations in the one-dimensional cellular automaton traffic flow model with open boundaries using parallel dynamics.In the case of one way out, there exist a critical position of the way out ic1 i_{c1} below which the current is constant for ÎČ0\beta_{0}<<ÎČ0c2\beta_{0c2} and decreases when increasing ÎČ0\beta_{0} for ÎČ0\beta_{0}>>ÎČ0c2\beta_{0c2}. When the way out is located at a position greater than ic2 i_{c2}, the current increases with ÎČ0\beta_{0} for ÎČ0\beta_{0}<<ÎČ0c1\beta_{0c1} and becomes constant for any value of ÎČ0\beta_{0} greater than ÎČ0c1\beta_{0c1}. While, when the way out is located at any position between ic1 i_{c1} and ic2 i_{c2} (ic1 i_{c1}<<ic2 i_{c2}), the current increases, for ÎČ0\beta_{0}<<ÎČ0c1\beta_{0c1}, with ÎČ0\beta_{0} and becomes constant for ÎČ0c1\beta_{0c1}<<ÎČ0\beta_{0}<<ÎČ0c2\beta_{0c2} and decreases with ÎČ0\beta_{0} for ÎČ0\beta_{0}>>ÎČ0c2\beta_{0c2}. In the later case the density undergoes two successive first order transitions; from high density to maximal current phase at ÎČ0\beta_{0}==ÎČ0c1\beta_{0c1} and from intermediate density to the low one at ÎČ0\beta_{0}==ÎČ0c2\beta_{0c2}. In the case of two ways out located respectively at the positions i1 i_{1} and i2 i_{2}, the two successive transitions occur only when the distance i2i_{2}-i1i_{1} separating the two ways is smaller than a critical distance dcd_{c}. Phase diagrams in the (α,ÎČ0\alpha,\beta_{0}), (ÎČ,ÎČ0\beta,\beta_{0}) and (i1,ÎČ0i_{1},\beta_{0}) planes are established.     ARA-Homotopy Perturbation Technique with Applications

    In this study, we propose a novel combination method between the ARA integral transform and the homotopy perturbation approach to solve systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. The difficulty arising in solving nonlinear partial differential equations could simply be overcome by using He’s polynomials during the application of the new method. The proposed technique can provide the solutions of the target problems without pre-assumptions or restrictive constrains in addition to avoiding the round-off errors. The efficiency of the new method is illustrated by applying it to solve different examples of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. We discuss three interesting applications and solve them by the new approach, called ARA-homotopy perturbation method and get exact solutions, also the results are illustrated in figures

    Renal Function Is Related to Severity of Coronary Artery Calcification in Elderly Persons: The Rotterdam Study

    Background: Coronary artery calcification (CAC) has been proposed to be the underlying mechanism of the increased risk of coronary heart disease with reductions in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Since renal function diminishes with aging we examined the association between GFR and CAC in the Rotterdam Study, a population-based study of elderly individuals. Methods: The study was performed in 1703 subjects without a history of coronary heart disease. GFR was estimated using the modification of diet in renal disease equation. We used analysis of covariance to test for mean differences in CAC between GFR tertiles. Results: The mean CAC scores in the middle and lowest GFR tertile did not significantly differ from the mean CAC score in the highest GFR tertile (geometric mean CAC score 4.1 and 4.3 vs 4.2). In a multivariable model the mean CAC score did also not differ between the GFR tertiles. As the interaction term between age and GFR was significant (P = 0.037), we divided the population in two age categories based on median age of 70 years. Below 70 years, the mean CAC scores did not differ between the GFR tertiles. Above median age, mean CAC score in the lowest GFR tertile was significantly higher than the mean CAC score in the highest tertile in a multivariable model (CAC 4.9 vs 4.5, p = 0.010). Conclusion: In this population-based study we observed that the association between CAC and GFR is modified by age. In participants at least 70 years of age, a decrease in GFR was associated with increased CAC

    Planar cell polarity signalling coordinates heart tube remodelling through tissue-scale polarisation of actomyosin activity

    Development of a multiple-chambered heart from the linear heart tube is inherently linked to cardiac looping. Although many molecular factors regulating the process of cardiac chamber ballooning have been identified, the cellular mechanisms underlying the chamber formation remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that cardiac chambers remodel by cell neighbour exchange of cardiomyocytes guided by the planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway triggered by two non-canonical Wnt ligands, Wnt5b and Wnt11. We find that PCP signalling coordinates the localisation of actomyosin activity, and thus the efficiency of cell neighbour exchange. On a tissue-scale, PCP signalling planar-polarises tissue tension by restricting the actomyosin contractility to the apical membranes of outflow tract cells. The tissue-scale polarisation of actomyosin contractility is required for cardiac looping that occurs concurrently with chamber ballooning. Taken together, our data reveal that instructive PCP signals couple cardiac chamber expansion with cardiac looping through the organ-scale polarisation of actomyosin-based tissue tension

    Chronic hypertension remains a major cause of global mortality and morbidity. It is a complex disease that is the clinical manifestation of multiple genetic, environmental, nutritional, hormonal, and aging-related disorders. Evidence supports a role for vascular aging in the development of hypertension involving an impairment in endothelial function together with an alteration in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) calcium homeostasis leading to increased myogenic tone. Changes in free intracellular calcium levels ([Ca] ) are mediated either by the influx of Ca from the extracellular space or release of Ca from intracellular stores, mainly the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). The influx of extracellular Ca occurs primarily through voltage-gated Ca channels (VGCCs), store-operated Ca channels (SOC), and Ca release-activated channels (CRAC), whereas SR-Ca release occurs through inositol trisphosphate receptor (IPR) and ryanodine receptors (RyRs). IPR-mediated SR-Ca release, in the form of Ca waves, not only contributes to VSMC contraction and regulates VGCC function but is also intimately involved in structural remodeling of resistance arteries in hypertension. This involves a phenotypic switch of VSMCs as well as an alteration of cytoplasmic Ca signaling machinery, a phenomena tightly related to the aging process. Several lines of evidence implicate changes in expression/function levels of IPR isoforms in the development of hypertension, VSMC phenotypic switch, and vascular aging.     Influence of low back pain and prognostic value of MRI in sciatica patients in relation to back pain

    Background: Patients with sciatica frequently complain about associated back pain. It is not known whether there are prognostic relevant differences in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) findings between sciatica patients with and without disabling back pain. Methods: The study population contained patients with sciatica who underwent a baseline MRI to assess eligibility for a randomized trial designed to compare the efficacy of early surgery with prolonged conservative care for sciatica. Two neuroradiologists and one neurosurgeon independently evaluated all MR images. The MRI readers were blinded to symptom status. The MRI findings were compared between sciatica patients with and without disabling back pain. The presence of disabling back pain at baseline was correlated with perceived recovery at one year. Results: Of 379 included sciatica patients, 158 (42%) had disabling back pain. Of the patients with both sciatica and disabling back pain 68% did reveal a herniated disc with nerve root compression on MRI, compared to 88% of patients with predominantly sciatica (P,0.001). The existence of disabling back pain in sciatica at baseline was negatively associated with perceived recovery at one year (Odds ratio [OR] 0.32, 95% Confidence Interval 0.18-0.56, P,0.001). Sciatica patients with disabling back pain in absence of nerve root compression on MRI at baseline reported less perceived recovery at one year compared to those with predominantly sciatica and nerve root compression on MRI (50% vs 91%, P,0.001). Conclusion: Sciatica patients with disabling low back pain reported an unfavorable outcome at one-year follow-up compared to those with predominantly sciatica.     Hf-based high-k materials for Si nanocrystal floating gate memories

    Pure and Si-rich HfO2 layers fabricated by radio frequency sputtering were utilized as alternative tunnel oxide layers for high-k/Si-nanocrystals-SiO2/SiO2 memory structures. The effect of Si incorporation on the properties of Hf-based tunnel layer was investigated. The Si-rich SiO2 active layers were used as charge storage layers, and their properties were studied versus deposition conditions and annealing treatment. The capacitance-voltage measurements were performed to study the charge trapping characteristics of these structures. It was shown that with specific deposition conditions and annealing treatment, a large memory window of about 6.8 V is achievable at a sweeping voltage of ± 6 V, indicating the utility of these stack structures for low-operating-voltage nonvolatile memory devices
