The Nd(He,) and Sm(,He) reactions with applications to decay of Nd
The Nd(He,) reaction at 140 MeV/u and Sm(,He)
reaction at 115 MeV/u were measured, populating excited states in Pm.
The transitions studied populate intermediate states of importance for the
(neutrinoless) decay of Nd to Sm. Monopole and
dipole contributions to the measured excitation-energy spectra were extracted
by using multipole decomposition analyses. The experimental results were
compared with theoretical calculations obtained within the framework of
Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA), which is one of the main
methods employed for estimating the half-life of the neutrinoless
decay () of Nd. The present results thus provide useful
information on the neutrino responses for evaluating the and
matrix elements. The matrix element
calculated from the Gamow-Teller transitions through the lowest state
in the intermediate nucleus is maximally about half of that deduced from the
half-life measured in direct counting experiments and at least
several transitions through intermediate states in Pm are
required to explain the half-life.
Because Gamow-Teller transitions in the Sm(,He) experiment are
strongly Pauli-blocked, the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths was
complicated by the excitation of the , ,
isovector spin-flip giant monopole resonance (IVSGMR). However, the near
absence of Gamow-Teller transition strength made it possible to cleanly
identify this resonance, and the strength observed is consistent with the full
exhaustion of the non-energy-weighted sum rule for the IVSGMR.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 2 table
Mercury release and speciation in chemical looping combustion of coal
In the in situ Gasification Chemical Looping Combustion of coal (iG-CLC), the fuel is gasified
in situ in the fuel reactor and gasification products are converted to CO2 and H2O by reaction
with the oxygen carrier. This work is the first study on mercury release in Chemical Looping
Combustion of coal. The fraction of the mercury in coal vaporized in the fuel reactor depended
mainly on the fuel reactor temperature and the coal type. In the fuel reactor, mercury was mainly
emitted as Hg0 in the gas phase and the amount increased with the temperature. In the air reactor,
mercury was mostly emitted as Hg2+. In a real CLC system, mercury emissions to the
atmosphere will decrease compared to conventional combustion as only mercury released in the
air reactor will reach the atmosphere. However, measures should be taken to reduce Hg0 in the

Cohort Profile: The epidemiology of chronic diseases and multimorbidity. The EpiChron cohort study
Why was the cohort set up?
Greater life expectancy in Europe over the past few decades has been translated into an increasing burden of chronic diseases that accumulate as the population ages, whereas acute infectious diseases have been progressively pushed into the background. The incidence of conditions such as hypertension, obesity and asthma has increased dramatically worldwide, and cancer, diabetes and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are responsible for almost 70% of global deaths.
Concurrently, the prevalence of multimorbidity (as of people affected by more than one chronic disorder) is also increasing and appears as the most common chronic condition at present.
Multimorbidity affects almost 3 in 4 individuals aged 65 years and older, although it represents a problem not only for the elderly but also for adult and even young populations, at whom prevention strategies should aim. People affected by multimorbidity often experience fragmentation of care, greater and inadequate use of health services and polypharmacy, which in turn may increase the risk of low adherence and adverse drug reactions.
All of this leads to individuals’ quality of life deterioration and higher risk of mortality. Besides, handling patients with multimorbidity represents a daily challenge for physicians and health systems..
Comparación entre las técnicas de cribado de patología cervical y las conizaciones de tres hospitales en españa
Objetivo: Analizar las características poblacionales y los métodos diagnósticos de patología cervical para la prevención del cáncer de cérvix de tres hospitales españoles para mejorar y unificar los programas de cribado y prevención. Material y métodos: Estudio retrospectivo de las características demográficas y clínicas de 408 mujeres con patología cervical uterina diagnosticadas en 3 hospitales españoles. Se comparan los factores de riesgo, el proceso diagnóstico y la indicación de tratamiento de dos grupos: las que requirieron conización cervical (n=222) y las que no precisaron tratamiento quirúrgico (n=186). También se analizan las recomendaciones vacunales y su grado de cumplimiento. Resultados: Las mujeres conizadas usaron más anticoncepción hormonal y tienen un mayor hábito tabáquico mientras que el número de compañeros sexuales es mayor en pacientes no conizadas. Más del 50% de pacientes con biopsia cervical positiva presentaron un resultado igual o más grave en la anatomía patológica de la pieza quirúrgica. Existen diferencias significativas en sensibilidad y valor predictivo positivo de la citología y de la determinación de HPV entre hospitales. La recomendación de vacunación en ambos grupos fue similar, el porcentaje de mujeres que no la cumplieron fue elevado y significativamente mayor entre pacientes conizadas. Conclusión: En nuestro medio las mujeres conizadas tienen características clínicas y epidemiológicas diferentes a las no conizadas, existen diferencias entre las técnicas diagnósticas de distintos hospitales y sin embargo la concordancia entre biopsia y resultado del cono es elevada. Sigue siendo necesaria una correcta educación sanitaria en relación con la vacunación en mujeres con patología cervical.
Background: To analyse the characteristics of the population and diagnostic methods related to the cervical cancer prevention program in three different-level hospitals of a Spanish region in order to improve and unify the screening program. Methods: We retrospectively studied demographic and clinical characteristics of 408 women with cervical lesions diagnosed in three hospitals in Aragon (Spain). Correlation between risk factors, diagnosis process and conisation indication was analysed divided in two groups: conisation required (n=222) or non-conisation (n=186). We also assessed the number of vaccine recommendations made to the patients and the degree of compliance. Results: Conisaited women more frequently used a combined hormonal contraceptive method and are more smokers, while the sexual partners are more in women without conisation. More than 50% of women con positive biopsy was confirmed after surgical treatment. There are significant differences between sensibility and positive predictive value of pap-smear and HPV determination in different hospitals. The recombinant vaccine was recommended to both groups at a similar rate. The percentage of women who were recommended to receive the vaccine but chose not to do it, was high in both groups but significantly higher in the Conisation group. Conclusion: In our environment conisaited women have different clinical and epidemiological profiles, there are differences between diagnosis techniques in different hospitals, however, the concordance between biopsy and definitive result is high. A good sanitary education is necessary in relation with the vaccination of women with cervical pathology
Estudio de las rocas paleozoicas y los macizos graníticos que afloran en el Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu y zonas colindantes mediante datos geológicos, geofísicos y petrofísicos
The Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu is located
between the La Maladeta and Andorra-
Mount Louis granites. The characterization
of the Parc’s geology at depth can help to
know the emplacement mechanism of these
granites, their relationships with the plutonic
and volcanic rocks outcropping to the North
and South of the Parc, respectively, and if all
these rocks belong to the same magmatic
system.
To achieve these objectives, in the frame
of the present research project, we have
compiled and homogenezed previous
gravimetric and magnetic data, and
acquired new geophysical data, in particular,
gravity data. We have also constructed
new geological cross-sections oriented
NE-SW from previous and new acquired
geological data and characterized the
petrophysical properties of the geological
units in order to obtain the density and
magnetic susceptibility of all different
rocks outcropping in the study area. The
geological cross-sections together with the
petrophysical data will be used in the 2,5
and 3D gravimetric modelling to improve our
understanding of the subsurface geology of
this part of the Central Pyrenees and of the
Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu.El Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu se encuentra
en la zona situada entre el granito de La
Maladeta y el granito de Andorra-Mount
Louis. Conocer y entender la geología del
subsuelo del Parc nos ayudará a saber
cómo se produjo el emplazamiento de
ambos macizos graníticos, su relación
con las rocas plutónicas y volcánicas que
afloran en la parte norte y sur del Parc,
respectivamente, y si forman parte de un
mismo sistema magmático.
Para alcanzar estos objetivos, se
está realizando una recopilación y
homogeneización de datos gravimétricos
y magnéticos ya existentes, así como la
adquisición de nuevos datos geofísicos,
en particular de gravimetría. Además,
partiendo de estudios geológicos previos
y datos propios, se está llevando a cabo
la realización de cortes geológicos de
dirección NE-SO y el estudio petrofísico
de las unidades geológicas para obtener
los valores de densidad y susceptibilidad
magnética de todos los tipos de rocas que
afloran en el área de estudio. Los cortes
geológicos junto con los datos de petrofísica
se utilizarán en la modelización gravimétrica
2,5D y 3D para mejorar la interpretación de
la geología del subsuelo en este sector de

Direct Identification of the Meloidogyne incognita Secretome Reveals Proteins with Host Cell Reprogramming Potential
The root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, is an obligate parasite that causes significant damage to a broad range of host plants. Infection is associated with secretion of proteins surrounded by proliferating cells. Many parasites are known to secrete effectors that interfere with plant innate immunity, enabling infection to occur; they can also release pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs, e.g., flagellin) that trigger basal immunity through the nematode stylet into the plant cell. This leads to suppression of innate immunity and reprogramming of plant cells to form a feeding structure containing multinucleate giant cells. Effectors have generally been discovered using genetics or bioinformatics, but M. incognita is non-sexual and its genome sequence has not yet been reported. To partially overcome these limitations, we have used mass spectrometry to directly identify 486 proteins secreted by M. incognita. These proteins contain at least segmental sequence identity to those found in our 3 reference databases (published nematode proteins; unpublished M. incognita ESTs; published plant proteins). Several secreted proteins are homologous to plant proteins, which they may mimic, and they contain domains that suggest known effector functions (e.g., regulating the plant cell cycle or growth). Others have regulatory domains that could reprogram cells. Using in situ hybridization we observed that most secreted proteins were produced by the subventral glands, but we found that phasmids also secreted proteins. We annotated the functions of the secreted proteins and classified them according to roles they may play in the development of root knot disease. Our results show that parasite secretomes can be partially characterized without cognate genomic DNA sequence. We observed that the M. incognita secretome overlaps the reported secretome of mammalian parasitic nematodes (e.g., Brugia malayi), suggesting a common parasitic behavior and a possible conservation of function between metazoan parasites of plants and animals
Intensification of Antiretroviral Therapy with a CCR5 Antagonist in Patients with Chronic HIV-1 Infection: Effect on T Cells Latently Infected
Objective: The primary objective was to assess the effect of MVC intensification on latently infected CD4+ T cells in
chronically HIV-1-infected patients receiving antiretroviral therapy.
Methods: We performed an open-label pilot phase II clinical trial involving chronically HIV-1-infected patients receiving
stable antiretroviral therapy whose regimen was intensified with 48 weeks of maraviroc therapy. We analyzed the latent
reservoir, the residual viremia and episomal 2LTR DNA to examine the relationship between these measures and the HIV-1
latent reservoir, immune activation, lymphocyte subsets (including effector and central memory T cells), and markers
associated with bacterial translocation.
Results: Overall a non significant reduction in the size of the latent reservoir was found (p = 0.068). A mean reduction of 1.82
IUPM was observed in 4 patients with detectable latent reservoir at baseline after 48 weeks of intensification. No effect on
plasma residual viremia was observed. Unexpectedly, all the patients had detectable 2LTR DNA circles at week 24, while
none of them showed those circles at the end of the study. No changes were detected in CD4+ or CD8+ counts, although a
significant decrease was found in the proportion of HLA-DR+/CD38+ CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells. LPS and sCD14 levels increased.
Conclusions: Intensification with MVC was associated with a trend to a decrease in the size of the latent HIV-1 reservoir in
memory T cells. No impact on residual viremia was detected. Additional studies with larger samples are needed to confirm
the results
