    Minimal Z' models and the early LHC

    We consider a class of minimal extensions of the Standard Model with an extra massive neutral gauge boson Z'. They include both family-universal models, where the extra U(1) is associated with (B-L), and non-universal models where the Z' is coupled to a non-trivial linear combination of B and the lepton flavours. After giving an estimate of the range of parameters compatible with a Grand Unified Theory, we present the current experimental bounds, discussing the interplay between electroweak precision tests and direct searches at the Tevatron. Finally, we assess the discovery potential of the early LHC.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures.     At the Fermilab Tevatron, the CDF detector is used to study diboson production in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV.     Gradients and dynamics of inner bark and needle osmotic potentials in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst)

    Preconditions of phloem transport in conifers are relatively unknown. We studied the variation of needle and inner bark axial osmotic gradients and xylem water potential in Scots pine and Norway spruce by measuring needle and inner bark osmolality in saplings and mature trees over several periods within a growing season. The needle and inner bark osmolality was strongly related to xylem water potential in all studied trees. Sugar concentrations were measured in Scots pine, and they had similar dynamics to inner bark osmolality. The sucrose quantity remained fairly constant over time and position, whereas the other sugars exhibited a larger change with time and position. A small osmotic gradient existed from branch to stem base under pre-dawn conditions, and the osmotic gradient between upper stem and stem base was close to zero. The turgor in branches was significantly driven by xylem water potential, and the turgor loss point in branches was relatively close to daily minimum needle water potentials typically reported for Scots pine. Our results imply that xylem water potential considerably impacts the turgor pressure gradient driving phloem transport and that gravitation has a relatively large role in phloem transport in the stems of mature Scots pine trees.Peer reviewe

    Three-particle correlations in QCD parton showers

    Three-particle correlations in quark and gluon jets are computed for the first time in perturbative QCD. We give results in the double logarithmic approximation and the modified leading logarithmic approximation. In both resummation schemes, we use the formalism of the generating functional and solve the evolution equations analytically from the steepest descent evaluation of the one-particle distribution.     NWF-prosessiin perustuvan vedenpuhdistuksen käyttäjäpotentiaalin kartoitus Suomessa

    Opinnäytetyön aiheena oli kartoittaa potentiaalisia asiakkaita NWF-prosessiin perustuvalle vedensuodatuslaitteistolle. Toimeksiantajana toimi Ferroplan Oy, joka on tuonut markkinoille Natwat-nimisen vedensuodatusjärjestelmän, joka perustuu NWF-prosessiin. Kartoituksen avulla Ferroplan Oy tekee suunnitelman asiakasvierailuja varten kohdentaakseen laitteiston markkinoinnin tehokkaasti potentiaalisiin asiakkaisiin. Laitteiston hyviä puolia ovat muun muassa kompakti koko, kemikaalittomuus ja vähäinen huoltotarve kulumattomien osien ansiosta. Natwat-laitteistossa vesi puhdistetaan strippauksen, ilmastuksen ja erilaisten suodattimien avulla. Työhön kuului kunnallisiin talousvedenkäsittelylaitoksiin kohdistuva kysely, jonka perusteella saatiin selville kyseisen laitoksen potentiaalisuus Natwat-laitteistolle. Jos laitoksen tuottama vesi ei ole laadultaan tarpeeksi hyvää ja laatuongelmia tuottaa erityisesti rauta ja mangaani tai laitokselle on tulossa saneeraus, on laitos potentiaalinen asiakas. Laitteisto sopii myös jätevesien puhdistukseen, ja kartoitukseen valittiin elintarviketeollisuuden tuotannonjätevesistä kaikkein haastavimmat kohteet, joita oli huomattavasti vähemmän talousvedenkäsittelylaitoksiin verrattuna. Kohteita olivat teurastamot sekä kalan-, lihan- ja siipikarjantuotantolaitokset. Selvisi, että suurimmalla osalla kartoitukseen valituista talousvedenkäsittelylaitoksista ei esiintynyt ongelmia aiheuttavia laatuhäiriöitä. Noin neljäsosa kartoitukseen valituista oli potentiaalisia Natwat-laitteiston käyttäjiä, ja eniten ongelmia raakavedessä aiheuttavat rauta ja mangaani, jotka ovat yleisiä Suomen vesistöissä. Kyselyn perusteella useassa elintarviketeollisuudenyrityksessä tuotannonjätevesien puhdistamiseen käytetään useaa menetelmää ennen vesien johtamista kunnalliseen viemäriin. Pelkkä rasvanerotus on käytössä noin neljänneksellä, ja muutama laitos käsittelee jätevetensä täysin itsenäisesti, eikä johda niitä kunnalliseen viemäriin.The objective of the Bachelors thesis was to locate potential users in Finland for a water purification system which is based on NWF-process. The thesis was commissioned by Ferroplan Oy. Ferroplan Oy has brought to the market a water purification system called Natwat, which is based on the NWF-process and especially designed for the removal of iron and manganese. After locating all the potential users Ferroplan is able to efficiently market the Natwat-system. Good qualities of the system are for example a compact size, usage without chemicals and minor need of maintenance because there are no wearing parts. Water is purified in the system with stripping, aerating and with many filters. The thesis included a survey by telephone where material was collected from municipal household water plants. The main task of the survey was to find out whether a respondent was a potential user or not. If the water treatment plant produces water that does not meet the quality recommendations or there is a renovation planned, the plant is a potential user of the NWF-process. The purification system is also suitable for wastewater treatment and, therefore some food industry facilities were also included in the survey. Facilities with the most challenging wastewater from the production were chosen; including slaughterhouses, fish, meat and poultry production plants. The survey revealed that most of the drinking water treatment plants did not have any problems with the water. A quarter of the plants chosen for the survey are potential users of the Natwat-system, and it was found that iron and manganese are the main problems with the raw water in Finland. As a result of the survey, it was also discovered that in several food industry facilities wastewater from the production goes through several treatment processes before it is discharged into the municipal sewage system. A quarter of the facilities, however, only separate grease from the water and a few treat the wastewater themselves before discharging it into the environment
