This paper represents an attempt to shed light on the creative efforts of this artist. Some of the problems which have arisen in the process of creating and explaining the existence of fifteen thesis paintings are presented. Contemplation and soul searching have gone into this procedure, for this artist is vitally concerned with the meaning of art and her relation to it. This has been an impelling search—one that has taken precedence over other problems of Importance. Many times the question has been asked: "What is Art?." Art has meant different things to different people throughout recorded history. As man grows and develops, man's art reflects these changes. As changes take place within his environment, his concept of art reflects these changes

The Effects Of A 4-Week Resistance Training Intervention On Cardiovascular And Autonomic Function In Young Women

PURPOSE: Cardiovascular disease is growing in prevalence, and the cardiovascular and autonomic protective properties of estrogen in women are no longer keeping up with the lifestyle habits and risk factors increasing this disease risk. While aerobic training has been shown to promote increased cardiovascular health and autonomic function, little is known about the effects of resistance training. METHODS: Nine women were recruited to participate in a 4-week strength-based resistance training intervention following a 4-week wait period. Subjects arrived to the lab for baseline measurements of anthropometrics, body composition, cardiovascular function, and autonomic function. Subjects were asked to attend baseline measurements, familiarization, and maximal effort strength test pre-wait period, post-wait period/pre-intervention, and post-intervention. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in strength gains for squat, bench, and deadlift, pre- to post-intervention (p=0.000, p=0.002, and p=0.000, respectively). There was a significant increase in resting heart rate pre- to post-intervention (p=0.017). A significant decrease was observed in both baroreceptor sensitivity and total peripheral resistance pre- to post-intervention (p=0.018 and p=0.002, respectively). CONCLUSION: Four weeks of a strength-based resistance training intervention promoted strength gains in young women without eliciting deleterious effects in cardiovascular and autonomic function

Risk Factors for Ocular Chlamydia after Three Mass Azithromycin Distributions

Trachoma, which is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide, is caused by repeated ocular infection with Chlamydia trachomatis. Treatment for trachoma includes mass azithromycin treatments to the entire community. The World Health Organization recommends at least 3 rounds of annual mass antibiotic distributions in areas with trachoma, with further mass treatments based on the prevalence of trachoma. However, there are other options for communities that have received several rounds of treatment. For example, programs could continue antibiotic treatments only in those households most likely to have infected individuals. In this study, we performed trachoma monitoring on children from 12 Ethiopian communities one year after a third mass azithromycin treatment, and conducted a household survey at the same time. We found that children were more likely to be infected with ocular chlamydia if they had ocular inflammatory signs or ocular discharge, or if they had missed the preceding antibiotic treatment, had an infected sibling, or came from a larger community. These risk factors suggest that after mass azithromycin treatments, trachoma programs could consider continuing antibiotic distributions to households that have missed prior antibiotic distributions, in households with children who have the clinical signs of trachoma, and in larger communities

Sustainable Reinforced Concrete Beams: Mechanical Optimisation and 3D-Printed Formwork

International audienceThe embodied energy of a building is not only but essentially due to the quantity of material in its structure. Current fabrication techniques of optimised reinforced concrete (RC) structural elements have not proved sufficient economic competitiveness to be broadly accepted by the construction industry. This partly explains why the construction industry has not yet been able to reduce the embodied energy of newly-constructed buildings or civil works. However, most of the researches driven in the academic world on digital fabrication with concrete are focused on the construction of non-standard structures. Application of digital fabrication to standard structures could help bridge the gap between the need for lower-carbon structures and the economic interest of players in the construction industry. This paper questions the compatibility of existing building codes with digital manufacturing techniques and presents a novel method for the fabrication of sustainable optimised reinforced concrete beams, compliant with EN 1992-1-1 design requirements

Renal association clinical practice guideline in post-operative care in the kidney transplant recipient

These guidelines cover the care of patients from the period following kidney transplantation until the transplant is no longer working or the patient dies. During the early phase prevention of acute rejection and infection are the priority. After around 3-6 months, the priorities change to preservation of transplant function and avoiding the long-term complications of immunosuppressive medication (the medication used to suppress the immune system to prevent rejection). The topics discussed include organization of outpatient follow up, immunosuppressive medication, treatment of acute and chronic rejection, and prevention of complications. The potential complications discussed include heart disease, infection, cancer, bone disease and blood disorders. There is also a section on contraception and reproductive issues.Immediately after the introduction there is a statement of all the recommendations. These recommendations are written in a language that we think should be understandable by many patients, relatives, carers and other interested people. Consequently we have not reworded or restated them in this lay summary. They are graded 1 or 2 depending on the strength of the recommendation by the authors, and AD depending on the quality of the evidence that the recommendation is based on
