Heart Rate Variability during Plateau Waves of Intracranial Pressure: a pilot descriptive study
This study aims to describe heart rate variability during the first episode of plateau waves of intracranial pressure (ICP) in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in order to characterize and identify at bedside this cerebrovascular phenomenon. The general behavior of the heart rate variability (HRV) spectral measures expressed in the medians across patients is concordant with an increased HRV in the latter part of the baseline and plateau wave, followed by a decrease after the event and a new increase during the recovery. In low and high frequency bands the same increase is more marked in the parametric analysis. Interpretation of HRV may help clinicians to better identify the plateau waves and allow earlier management
Processing and classification of biological images: Application to histology
This article deals with a histological problem by using image processing and feature extraction in images of renal tissues of rats and their classification through various methods such as: Bayesian inference, decision trees and support vector machines
Arsenite oxidase in complex with antimonite and arsenite oxyanions - insights into the catalytic mechanism
Arsenic contamination of groundwater is among one of the biggest health threats affecting millions of people in the world. There is an urgent need for efficient arsenic biosensors where the use of arsenic metabolizing enzymes can be explored. In this work we have solved the crystal structures of four complexes of arsenite oxidase (Aio) obtained in complex with arsenic and antimony oxyanions and the structures determined correspond to intermediate states of the enzymatic mechanism. These structural data were complemented with DFT calculations providing a unique view of the molybdenum active site at different time points that, together with mutagenesis data, enabled to clarify the enzymatic mechanism and the molecular determinants for the oxidation of As(III) to the less toxic As(V) species
Minimal flavour violation extensions of the seesaw
We analyze the most natural formulations of the minimal lepton flavour
violation hypothesis compatible with a type-I seesaw structure with three heavy
singlet neutrinos N, and satisfying the requirement of being predictive, in the
sense that all LFV effects can be expressed in terms of low energy observables.
We find a new interesting realization based on the flavour group (being and respectively the SU(2) singlet and
doublet leptons). An intriguing feature of this realization is that, in the
normal hierarchy scenario for neutrino masses, it allows for sizeable
enhancements of transitions with respect to LFV processes involving
the lepton. We also discuss how the symmetries of the type-I seesaw
allow for a strong suppression of the N mass scale with respect to the scale of
lepton number breaking, without implying a similar suppression for possible
mechanisms of N productionComment: 14 pages, 6 figure
