SAMBA: Stochastic Analytical Model with a Bayesian Approach
We develop and estimate a DSGE model for the Brazilian economy, to be used as part of the macroeconomic modeling framework at the Central Bank of Brazil. The model combines the building blocks of standard DSGE models (e.g., price and wage rigidities and adjustment costs) with the following features that better describe the Brazilian economy: (i) a fiscal authority pursuing an explicit target for the primary surplus; (ii) administered or regulated prices as part of consumer prices; (iii) external finance for imports, amplifying the effects of changes in external financial conditions on the economy; and (iv) imported goods used in the production function of differentiated goods. It also includes the presence of financially constrained households. We estimate the model with Bayesian techniques, using data starting in 1999, when inflation targeting was implemented. Model evaluation, based on impulse response functions, moment conditions, variance error decomposition and initial forecasting exercises, suggests that the model can be a useful tool for policy analysis and forecasting.
Características clínicas e epidemiológicas do câncer da boca em hospital-escola de 1994 a 2002: aumento da incidência em mulheres, predomínio de doença local avançada e baixa incidência de metástases regionais
PURPOSE: Description of clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients who underwent surgery for oral cancer in a Medical School Teaching Hospital, and determination of differences with respect to other institutions and/or periods of time. METHOD: The charts of patients undergoing surgery for oral cancer from 1994 to 2002 were reviewed. Data were collected in a spreadsheet in order to analyze clinical and epidemiological features.. RESULTS: A total of 374 patients having undergone 406 operations was identified. Their ages varied from 14 to 94 years (mean = 57.4 years), with 255 men (68.2%), and 295 out 366 Caucasian (80.6%). A majority had tumors of the tongue and/or floor of mouth (55.6%), while 20.3% had lip cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma was found in 90.3%, and glandular carcinoma in 4%. T4 tumors in 39.6%, Tis or T1 lesions in 15.2% of all patients. Nearly 62% had no regional metastases, and the relative incidence in young patients (40 years or younger) reached 8.6%. CONCLUSION: In spite of the predominance of locally advanced tumors, a majority of patients had no neck metastases. The 31.8% incidence in females indicates an increasing incidence of oral cavity cancer among women when compared to previous periods at the same institution.OBJETIVO: Caracterizar epidemiológica e clinicamente a população atendida por câncer de boca em hospital-escola de atenção terciária e quaternária e verificar variações em relação a outras casuísticas e períodos. MÉTODO: Procedeu-se à revisão dos prontuários dos operados por câncer oral de 1994 a 2002. As características clínicas e epidemiológicas foram colocadas em planilhas e analisadas. RESULTADOS: Foram identificados 374 portadores de câncer da boca que foram submetidos a 406 operações. A idade dos doentes variou de 14 a 94 anos (média = 57,4 anos). Duzentos e cinqüenta e cinco eram do gênero masculino (68,2%). Duzentos e noventa e cinco entre 366 doentes eram caucasianos (80,6%). A maioria era portadora de tumores da língua e/ou do soalho da boca (194 entre 349 doentes; 55,6%), e 71 (20,3%) tinham tumores dos lábios. O carcinoma epidermóide foi encontrado em 90,3% e carcinomas glandulares em 4%. Os tumores T4 estavam presentes em 39,6% dos doentes; 15,2% tinham lesões Tis ou T1. Quase 62% dos pacientes não tinham metástases cervicais. A incidência relativa em jovens (com até 40 anos de idade) atingiu 8,6%. CONCLUSÃO: Apesar dos achados freqüentemente referidos na literatura terem se confirmado (como o predomínio de lesões avançadas localmente), a maioria dos doentes não apresentava metástases cervicais. Acima do observado em outras casuísticas, os 31,8% de mulheres na presente casuística indica a preocupante e crescente incidência no gênero feminino
AKT can modulate the in vitro response of HNSCC cells to irreversible EGFR inhibitors
Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is overexpressed in up to 90% of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) tumors. Cetuximab is the first targeted (anti-EGFR) therapy approved for the treatment of HNSCC patients. However, its efficacy is limited due to primary and secondary resistance, and there is no predict biomarkers of response. New generation of EGFR inhibitors with pan HER targeting and irreversible action, such as afatinib and allitinib, represents a significant therapeutic promise. In this study, we intend to compare the potential cytotoxicity of two anti-EGFR inhibitors (afatinib and allitinib) with cetuximab and to identify potential predictive biomarkers of response in a panel of HNSCC cell lines. The mutational analysis in the eight HNSCC cell lines revealed an EGFR mutation (p.H773Y) and gene amplification in the HN13 cells. According to the growth inhibition score (GI), allitinib was the most cytotoxic drug, followed by afatinib and finally cetuximab. The higher AKT phosphorylation level was associated with resistance to anti-EGFR agents. Therefore, we further performed drug combinations with anti-AKT agent (MK2206) and AKT1 gene editing, which demonstrated afatinib and allitinib sensitivity restored. Additionally, in silico analysis of TCGA database showed that AKT1 overexpression was present in 14.7% (41/279) of HNSCC cases, and was associated with perineural invasion in advanced stage. In conclusion, allitinib presented a greater cytotoxic profile when compared to afatinib and cetuximab. High-resolution genetic map and QTL analysis of growth-related traits of Hevea brasiliensis cultivated under suboptimal temperature and humidity conditions
Rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) cultivation is the main source of natural rubber worldwide and has been extended to areas with suboptimal climates and lengthy drought periods; this transition affects growth and latex production. High-density genetic maps with reliable markers support precise mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL), which can help reveal the complex genome of the species, provide tools to enhance molecular breeding, and shorten the breeding cycle. In this study, QTL mapping of the stem diameter, tree height, and number of whorls was performed for a full-sibling population derived from a GT1 and RRIM701 cross. A total of 225 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and 186 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were used to construct a base map with 18 linkage groups and to anchor 671 SNPs from genotyping by sequencing (GBS) to produce a very dense linkage map with small intervals between loci. The final map was composed of 1,079 markers, spanned 3,779.7 cM with an average marker density of 3.5 cM, and showed collinearity between markers from previous studies. Significant variation in phenotypic characteristics was found over a 59-month evaluation period with a total of 38 QTLs being identified through a composite interval mapping method. Linkage group 4 showed the greatest number of QTLs (7), with phenotypic explained values varying from 7.67 to 14.07%. Additionally, we estimated segregation patterns, dominance, and additive effects for each QTL. A total of 53 significant effects for stem diameter were observed, and these effects were mostly related to additivity in the GT1 clone. Associating accurate genome assemblies and genetic maps represents a promising strategy for identifying the genetic basis of phenotypic traits in rubber trees. Then, further research can benefit from the QTLs identified herein, providing a better understanding of the key determinant genes associated with growth of Hevea brasiliensis under limiting water conditions
Linkage disequilibrium and population structure in wild and cultivated populations of rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis).
Abstract: Among rubber tree species, which belong to the Hevea genus of the Euphorbiaceae family, Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr.de Juss.) Muell. Arg. is the main commercial source of natural rubber production worldwide. Knowledge of the population structure and linkage disequilibrium (LD) of this species is essential for the efficient organization and exploitation of genetic resources. Here, we obtained single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using a genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approach and then employed the SNPs for the following objectives: (i) to identify the positions of SNPs on a genetic map of a segregating mapping population, (ii) to evaluate the population structure of a germplasm collection, and (iii) to detect patterns of LD decay among chromosomes for future genetic association studies in rubber tree. A total of 626 genotypes, including both germplasm accessions (368) and individuals from a genetic mapping population (254), were genotyped. A total of 77,660 and 21,283 SNPs were detected by GBS in the germplasm and mapping populations, respectively. The mapping population, which was previously mapped, was constructed with 1,062 markers, among which only 576 SNPs came from GBS, reducing the average interval between two adjacent markers to 4.4 cM. SNPs from GBS genotyping were used for the analysis of genetic structure and LD estimation in the germplasm accessions. Two groups, which largely corresponded to the cultivated and wild populations, were detected using STRUCTURE and via principal coordinate analysis. LD analysis, also using the mapped SNPs, revealed that non-random associations varied along chromosomes, with regions of high LD interspersed with regions of low LD. Considering the length of the genetic map (4,693 cM) and the mean LD (0.49 for cultivated and 0.02 for wild populations), a large number of evenly spaced SNPs would be needed to perform genome-wide association studies in rubber tree, and the wilder the genotypes used, the more difficult the mapping saturation

These materials serve as soil conditioners and as sequesterers of carbon in recalcitrant and in reactive forms. Studies carried out by Brazilian and by international groups have contributed to the emergence of an awareness of the compositions and of the uses of these materials. In this contribution we report on chemical studies that are leading to the development of a scientific and technological awareness, and of innovations that will have value in finding novel uses in applications

Three-month vs. one-year detraining effects after multicomponent exercise program in hypertensive older women
Background: Chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in older
women. Physical exercise training programs promote beneficial effects for health and quality of life.
However, exercise interruption periods may be detrimental for the hemodynamic and lipidic profiles
of hypertensive older women with dyslipidemia. Methods: Nineteen hypertensive older women
with dyslipidemia (exercise group: 67.5 ± 5.4 years, 1.53 ± 3.42 m, 71.84 ± 7.45 kg) performed
a supervised multicomponent exercise training program (METP) during nine months, followed
by a one-year detraining period (DT), while fourteen hypertensive older women (control group:
66.4 ± 5.2 years, 1.56 ± 3.10 m, 69.38 ± 5.24 kg) with dyslipidemia kept their continued daily routine
without exercise. For both groups, hemodynamic and lipidic profiles and functional capacities (FCs)
were assessed four times: before and after the METP and after 3 and 12 months of DT (no exercise
was carried out). Results: The METP improved hemodynamic and lipidic profiles (p < 0.05), while
three months of DT decreased all (p < 0.05) parameters, with the exception of diastolic blood pressure
(DBP). One year of DT significantly (p < 0.01) decreased systolic blood pressure (7.85%), DBP (2.29%),
resting heart rate (7.95%), blood glucose (19.14%), total cholesterol (10.27%), triglycerides (6.92%)
and FC—agility (4.24%), lower- (−12.75%) and upper-body strength (−12.17%), cardiorespiratory
capacity (−4.81%) and lower- (−16.16%) and upper-body flexibility (−11.11%). Conclusion: Nine
months of the exercise program significantly improved the hemodynamic and lipid profiles as well
as the functional capacities of hypertensive older women with dyslipidemia. Although a detraining
period is detrimental to these benefits, it seems that the first three months are more prominent in

Comparison of High-Volume and High-Intensity Upper Body Resistance Training on Acute Neuromuscular Performance and Ratings of Perceived Exertion
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(1): 723-733, 2020. The assessment of neuromuscular fatigue is important for minimizing the risks of nonfunctional overreaching, and monitoring training loads has rapidly grown in recent years. The objective of the study was to compare the acute upper body performance and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) responses to high-volume (HV) and high-intensity (HI) resistance-training loads. Sixteen young resistance-trained men (4 repetition maximum [RM] bench press = 105.8 ± 15.9 kg) were divided into two groups of eight subjects each that performed a HI (3 sets of 4RM with 180 s of rest), and a HV (4 sets of 12RM with 90 s of rest) training sessions. Session RPE was obtained 30 min Post. The medicine-ball throw (MBT) performance was measured at pre, and 10 min post. Training volume load (movements × load), and intensity (volume load ÷ movements) were calculated. Volume load was significantly higher for HV (10890 ± 1241 kg) than HI (2718 ± 413 kg) protocol (p \u3c 0.001). Intensity was significantly higher for HI (100.7 ± 15.3 kg) than HV (75.6 ± 8.6 kg) protocol (p = 0.002). MBT performance was significantly reduced from pre- to post- HV (p \u3c 0.001; Δ = −11%), but not in HI (p = 0.15; Δ = −5%). RPE was significantly higher Post-HI (9.9 ± 0.4) than Post HV (8.9 ± 0.8) (p = 0.01). We conclude that higher volume loads induce greater upper body neuromuscular fatigue in young resistance-trained men. Session RPE may reflect training intensity, but not the performance impairments
Structure and properties of brazilian peat: analysis by spectroscopy and microscopy
Peat was taken from the Sergipe State, Brazil and characterized by several techniques: elemental and thermal analyses; Fourier infrared (FTIR) and solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies; scanning electron microscopy (SEM), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Also, the Sergipe State peat samples were compared with other peat sample from later from Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The lowest O/C and E4/E6 ratios and differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves of the Santo Amaro (SAO) sample indicated that this sample had the highest degree of decomposition. FTIR results showed that Itabaiana (ITA) and São Paulo (SAP) samples presented more prominent peak at 1086 cm-1 attributed the presence of Si-O than SAO sample spectra. The SAO sample showed two more intense peaks at 2920 cm-1 and 2850 cm-1. These results were corroborated by 13C NMR and thermal gravimetric (TG) where the relative abundance of the alkyl-C groups was greater in the SAO sample. The X-ray diffractometry (XRD) of SAO sample is characteristic of amorphous matter however, the SAP and ITA samples revealed the large presence of quartz mineral. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) showed that the surface of peat samples have porous granules of organic material. The ITA and SAP peat samples are alike while SAO peat sample is richer in organic material. Only the SAO sample has truthful characteristics of peat. The results of this study showed that the samples are very different due to variable inorganic and organic material contents._________________________________________________________________________________________ RESUMO: Amostras de turfa (SAO e ITA) coletadas no Estado de Sergipe, Brasil, foram caracterizadas por diferentes técnicas: análise térmica e elementar, infravermelho, espectroscopia de ressonância magnética nuclear de 13C (NMR), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (SEM), microscopia eletrônica de varredura ambiental (ESEM), difratometria de raios X (XRD) e comparadas com outras amostras de turfa (SAP) coletadas no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. As razões mais baixas O/C, E4/E6 e as curvas de análise térmica diferencial (DTA) da amostra de Santo Amaro (SAO) indicaram que esta possui o mais alto grau de decomposição. Resultados da espectroscopia na região do infravermelho mostraram que as amostras de Itabaiana (ITA) e São Paulo (SAP) apresentam pico predominante a 1086 cm-1 atribuídos a presença de Si-O diferente da amostra de Santo Amaro (SAO). Esta mostrou dois picos intensos a 2920 cm-1 e 2850 cm-1 corroborando com dados de RMN 13C e análise termogravimétrica em que houve maior abundância dos grupos C-alquila. A difratometria de raios X (XRD) da amostra de SAO apresentou características de material amorfo. Entretanto, as amostras de SAP e ITA revelam maior presença de quartzo mineral. A microscopia eletrônica de varredura (SEM) e a microscopia eletrônica de varredura ambiental (ESEM) mostraram que a superfície das amostras de turfa possui grânulos porosos de matéria orgânica. As amostras de turfa de ITA e SAP são semelhantes enquanto a de SAO possui alto teor de matéria orgânica. Apenas a amostra de SAO apresenta características de turfa. Os resultados deste estudo mostraram que as amostras são muito diferentes devido aos teores variáveis de material orgânico e inorgânico
