Two-photon absorption in potassium niobate
We report measurements of thermal self-locking of a Fabry-Perot cavity
containing a potassium niobate (KNbO3) crystal. We develop a method to
determine linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients in intracavity
crystals by detailed analysis of the transmission lineshapes. These lineshapes
are typical of optical bistability in thermally loaded cavities. For our
crystal, we determine the one-photon absorption coefficient at 846 nm to be
(0.0034 \pm 0.0022) per m and the two-photon absorption coefficient at 846 nm
to be (3.2 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-11} m/W and the one-photon absorption
coefficient at 423 nm to be (13 \pm 2) per m. We also address the issue of
blue-light-induced-infrared-absorption (BLIIRA), and determine a coefficient
for this excited state absorption process. Our method is particularly well
suited to bulk absorption measurements where absorption is small compared to
scattering. We also report new measurements of the temperature dependence of
the index of refraction at 846 nm, and compare to values in the literature.Comment: 8 pages. To appear in J. Opt. Soc. Am.
Multiobjective synchronization of coupled systems
Copyright @ 2011 American Institute of PhysicsSynchronization of coupled chaotic systems has been a subject of great interest and importance, in theory but also various fields of application, such as secure communication and neuroscience. Recently, based on stability theory, synchronization of coupled chaotic systems by designing appropriate coupling has been widely investigated. However, almost all the available results have been focusing on ensuring the synchronization of coupled chaotic systems with as small coupling strengths as possible. In this contribution, we study multiobjective synchronization of coupled chaotic systems by considering two objectives in parallel, i. e., minimizing optimization of coupling strength and convergence speed. The coupling form and coupling strength are optimized by an improved multiobjective evolutionary approach. The constraints on the coupling form are also investigated by formulating the problem into a multiobjective constraint problem. We find that the proposed evolutionary method can outperform conventional adaptive strategy in several respects. The results presented in this paper can be extended into nonlinear time-series analysis, synchronization of complex networks and have various applications
The UK register of HIV seroconverters: Methods and analytical issues
A Register of HIV-infected persons who have had a negative antibody test within 3 years of their first antibody positive test (seroconverters) is being set up in the UK to monitor the distribution of times from HIV seroconversion to AIDS (the incubation period) and to death. It will also provide a national resource for use by those designing studies in this group of individuals. Clinicians caring for HIV-positive persons in Genito-Urinary Medicine, Infectious Disease and other departments throughout the UK were asked to participate by providing information on eligible subjects. Most laboratories undertaking HIV antibody testing were also contacted and asked to provide the name of the attending clinician for all seroconverters identified through the HIV laboratory reporting systems of the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC) and the Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health (SCIEH) and for any other seroconverters known to them but not identified by CDSC or SCIEH. Data items sought for the Register include: sex, ethnic group, probable route of HIV transmission, annual CD4 counts, details of therapy and prophylaxis prescribed, AIDS-defining events and vital status. Follow up information is collected annually. Wherever possible, all seroconverters known to a clinic have been identified, whether currently alive or dead, either from clinic records or laboratory reporting or both. The objective is to establish and update a complete register of seroconverters on a long-term basis to provide reliable estimates of the incubation period on which future projections of AIDS cases in the UK can be made
Behavior patterns of online users and the effect on information filtering
Understanding the structure and evolution of web-based user-object bipartite
networks is an important task since they play a fundamental role in online
information filtering. In this paper, we focus on investigating the patterns of
online users' behavior and the effect on recommendation process. Empirical
analysis on the e-commercial systems show that users have significant taste
diversity and their interests for niche items highly overlap. Additionally,
recommendation process are investigated on both the real networks and the
reshuffled networks in which real users' behavior patterns can be gradually
destroyed. Our results shows that the performance of personalized
recommendation methods is strongly related to the real network structure.
Detail study on each item shows that recommendation accuracy for hot items is
almost maximum and quite robust to the reshuffling process. However, niche
items cannot be accurately recommended after removing users' behavior patterns.
Our work also is meaningful in practical sense since it reveals an effective
direction to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the existing

Revisiting special relativity: A natural algebraic alternative to Minkowski spacetime
Minkowski famously introduced the concept of a space-time continuum in 1908,
merging the three dimensions of space with an imaginary time dimension , with the unit imaginary producing the correct spacetime distance , and the results of Einstein's then recently developed theory of special
relativity, thus providing an explanation for Einstein's theory in terms of the
structure of space and time. As an alternative to a planar Minkowski space-time
of two space dimensions and one time dimension, we replace the unit imaginary , with the Clifford bivector for the plane
that also squares to minus one, but which can be included without the addition
of an extra dimension, as it is an integral part of the real Cartesian plane
with the orthonormal basis and . We find that with this model of
planar spacetime, using a two-dimensional Clifford multivector, the spacetime
metric and the Lorentz transformations follow immediately as properties of the
algebra. This also leads to momentum and energy being represented as components
of a multivector and we give a new efficient derivation of Compton's scattering
formula, and a simple formulation of Dirac's and Maxwell's equations. Based on
the mathematical structure of the multivector, we produce a semi-classical
model of massive particles, which can then be viewed as the origin of the
Minkowski spacetime structure and thus a deeper explanation for relativistic
effects. We also find a new perspective on the nature of time, which is now

Lutein Protects RGC-5 Cells Against Hypoxia and Oxidative Stress
Retinal ischemia and oxidative stress lead to neuronal death in many ocular pathologies. Recently, we found that lutein, an oxy-carotenoid, protected the inner retina from ischemia/reperfusion injury. However, it is uncertain whether lutein directly protects retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Here, an in vitro model of hypoxia and oxidative stress was used to further investigate the neuroprotective role of lutein in RGCs. Cobalt chloride (CoCl2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were added to a transformed RGC cell line, RGC-5, to induce chemical hypoxia and oxidative stress, respectively. Either lutein or vehicle was added to cultured cells. A higher cell count was observed in the lutein-treated cells compared with the vehicle-treated cells. Our data from this in vitro model revealed that lutein might protect RGC-5 cells from damage when exposed to either CoCl2-induced chemical hypoxia or H2O2-induced oxidative stress. These results suggest that lutein may play a role as a neuroprotectant
The Precursors and Products of Justice Climates: Group Leader Antecedents and Employee Attitudinal Consequences
Drawing on the organizational justice, organizational climate, leadership and personality, and social comparison theory literatures, we develop hypotheses about the effects of leader personality on the development of three types of justice climates (e.g., procedural, interpersonal, and informational), and the moderating effects of these climates on individual level justice- attitude relationships. Largely consistent with the theoretically-derived hypotheses, the results showed that leader (a) agreeableness was positively related to procedural, interpersonal and informational justice climates, (b) conscientiousness was positively related to a procedural justice climate, and (c) neuroticism was negatively related to all three types of justice climates. Further, consistent with social comparison theory, multilevel data analyses revealed that the relationship between individual justice perceptions and job attitudes (e.g., job satisfaction, commitment) was moderated by justice climate such that the relationships were stronger when justice climate was high
Surgical versus nonsurgical therapy for lumbar spinal stenosis.
BACKGROUND: Surgery for spinal stenosis is widely performed, but its effectiveness as compared with nonsurgical treatment has not been shown in controlled trials.
METHODS: Surgical candidates with a history of at least 12 weeks of symptoms and spinal stenosis without spondylolisthesis (as confirmed on imaging) were enrolled in either a randomized cohort or an observational cohort at 13 U.S. spine clinics. Treatment was decompressive surgery or usual nonsurgical care. The primary outcomes were measures of bodily pain and physical function on the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form General Health Survey (SF-36) and the modified Oswestry Disability Index at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 and 2 years.
RESULTS: A total of 289 patients were enrolled in the randomized cohort, and 365 patients were enrolled in the observational cohort. At 2 years, 67% of patients who were randomly assigned to surgery had undergone surgery, whereas 43% of those who were randomly assigned to receive nonsurgical care had also undergone surgery. Despite the high level of nonadherence, the intention-to-treat analysis of the randomized cohort showed a significant treatment effect favoring surgery on the SF-36 scale for bodily pain, with a mean difference in change from baseline of 7.8 (95% confidence interval, 1.5 to 14.1); however, there was no significant difference in scores on physical function or on the Oswestry Disability Index. The as-treated analysis, which combined both cohorts and was adjusted for potential confounders, showed a significant advantage for surgery by 3 months for all primary outcomes; these changes remained significant at 2 years.
CONCLUSIONS: In the combined as-treated analysis, patients who underwent surgery showed significantly more improvement in all primary outcomes than did patients who were treated nonsurgically. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00000411 [ClinicalTrials.gov].)
