Set-Based Concurrent Engineering Model for Automotive Electronic/Software Systems Development

development. It is based on the combination of Set-Based Concurrent Engineering, a Toyota approach to
product development, with the standard V-Model of software development. Automotive industry currently
faces the problem of growing complexity of electronic/software systems. This issue is especially visible at
the level of integration of these systems which is difficult and error-prone. The presented conceptual
proposal is to establish better processes that could handle the electronic/software systems design and

Logarithmic rate dependence in deforming granular materials
Rate-independence for stresses within a granular material is a basic tenet of
many models for slow dense granular flows. By contrast, logarithmic rate
dependence of stresses is found in solid-on-solid friction, in geological
settings, and elsewhere. In this work, we show that logarithmic rate-dependence
occurs in granular materials for plastic (irreversible) deformations that occur
during shearing but not for elastic (reversible) deformations, such as those
that occur under moderate repetitive compression. Increasing the shearing rate,
\Omega, leads to an increase in the stress and the stress fluctuations that at
least qualitatively resemble what occurs due to an increase in the density.
Increases in \Omega also lead to qualitative changes in the distributions of
stress build-up and relaxation events. If shearing is stopped at t=0, stress
relaxations occur with \sigma(t)/ \sigma(t=0) \simeq A \log(t/t_0). This
collective relaxation of the stress network over logarithmically long times
provides a mechanism for rate-dependent strengthening.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. RevTeX
Measurement of the 18Ne(a,p_0)21Na reaction cross section in the burning energy region for X-ray bursts
The 18Ne(a,p)21Na reaction provides one of the main HCNO-breakout routes into
the rp-process in X-ray bursts. The 18Ne(a,p_0)21Na reaction cross section has
been determined for the first time in the Gamow energy region for peak
temperatures T=2GK by measuring its time-reversal reaction 21Na(p,a)18Ne in
inverse kinematics. The astrophysical rate for ground-state to ground-state
transitions was found to be a factor of 2 lower than Hauser-Feshbach
theoretical predictions. Our reduced rate will affect the physical conditions
under which breakout from the HCNO cycles occurs via the 18Ne(a,p)21Na

Association between proton pump inhibitor therapy and clostridium difficile infection: a contemporary systematic review and meta-analysis.
Abstract
Introduction
Emerging epidemiological evidence suggests that proton pump inhibitor (PPI) acid-suppression therapy is associated with an increased risk of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI).
Methods
Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from 1990 to January 2012 for analytical studies that reported an adjusted effect estimate of the association between PPI use and CDI. We performed random-effect meta-analyses. We used the GRADE framework to interpret the findings.
Results
We identified 47 eligible citations (37 case-control and 14 cohort studies) with corresponding 51 effect estimates. The pooled OR was 1.65, 95% CI (1.47, 1.85), I2 = 89.9%, with evidence of publication bias suggested by a contour funnel plot. A novel regression based method was used to adjust for publication bias and resulted in an adjusted pooled OR of 1.51 (95% CI, 1.26–1.83). In a speculative analysis that assumes that this association is based on causality, and based on published baseline CDI incidence, the risk of CDI would be very low in the general population taking PPIs with an estimated NNH of 3925 at 1 year.
Conclusions
In this rigorously conducted systemic review and meta-analysis, we found very low quality evidence (GRADE class) for an association between PPI use and CDI that does not support a cause-effect relationship
Mary's Powers of Imagination
One common response to the knowledge argument is the ability hypothesis. Proponents of the ability hypothesis accept that Mary learns what seeing red is like when she exits her black-and-white room, but they deny that the kind of knowledge she gains is propositional in nature. Rather, she acquires a cluster of abilities that she previously lacked, in particular, the abilities to recognize, remember, and imagine the color red. For proponents of the ability hypothesis, knowing what an experience is like simply consists in the possession of these abilities.
Criticisms of the ability hypothesis tend to focus on this last claim. Such critics tend to accept that Mary gains these abilities when she leaves the room, but they deny that such abilities constitute knowledge of what an experience is like. To my mind, however, this critical strategy grants too much. Focusing specifically on imaginative ability, I argue that Mary does not gain this ability when she leaves the room for she already had the ability to imagine red while she was inside it. Moreover, despite what some have thought, the ability hypothesis cannot be easily rescued by recasting it in terms of a more restrictive imaginative ability. My purpose here is not to take sides in the debate about physicalism, i.e., my criticism of the ability hypothesis is not offered in an attempt to defend the anti-physicalist conclusion of the knowledge argument. Rather, my purpose is to redeem the imagination from the misleading picture of it that discussion of the knowledge argument has fostered
Grounding, Analysis, and Russellian Monism
Few these days dispute that the knowledge argument demonstrates an epistemic gap between the physical facts and the facts about experience. It is much more contentious whether that epistemic gap can be used to demonstrate a metaphysical gap of a kind that is inconsistent with physicalism. In this paper I will explore two attempts to block the inference from an epistemic gap to a metaphysical gap – the first from the phenomenal concept strategy, the second from Russellian monism – and suggest how the proponent of the knowledge argument might respond to each of these challenges. In doing so, I will draw on recent discussions of grounding and essence in the metaphysics literature
Voice onset time and formant onset frequencies in Arabic stuttered speech
Neuromuscular models of stuttering consider that making transitions between phones results in inappropriate temporal arrangements of articulators in people who stutter (PWS). Using this framework, the current study examined the acoustic productions of two fine-grained phonetic features: voice onset time (VOT) and second formant (F2). The hypotheses were that PWS should differ from fluent persons (FP) in VOT duration and F2 onset frequency as a result of the transition deficit for environments with complex phonetic features such as Arabic emphatics. Ten adolescent PWS and 10 adolescent FPs participated in the study. They read and memorized four monosyllabic plain-emphatic words silently. Data were analyzed by Repeated Measures ANOVAs. The positive and negative VOT durations of/t/vs./tˁ/and/d/vs./dˁ/and F2 onset frequency were measured acoustically. Results showed that stuttering was significantly affected by emphatic consonants. PWS had atypical VOT durations and F2 values. Findings are consistent with the atypicality of VOT and F2 reported for English-speaking PWS. This atypicality is realized differently in Arabic depending on the articulatory complexity and cognitive load of the sound
Ovine pedomics : the first study of the ovine foot 16S rRNA-based microbiome
We report the first study of the bacterial microbiome of ovine interdigital skin based on 16S rRNA by pyrosequencing and conventional cloning with Sanger-sequencing. Three flocks were selected, one a flock with no signs of footrot or interdigital dermatitis, a second flock with interdigital dermatitis alone and a third flock with both interdigital dermatitis and footrot. The sheep were classified as having either healthy interdigital skin (H), interdigital dermatitis (ID) or virulent footrot (VFR). The ovine interdigital skin bacterial community varied significantly by flock and clinical condition. The diversity and richness of operational taxonomic units was greater in tissue from sheep with ID than H or VFR affected sheep. Actinobacteria, Bacteriodetes, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the most abundant phyla comprising 25 genera. Peptostreptococcus, Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus were associated with H, ID and VFR respectively. Sequences of Dichelobacter nodosus, the causal agent of ovine footrot, were not amplified due to mismatches in the 16S rRNA universal forward primer (27F). A specific real time PCR assay was used to demonstrate the presence of D. nodosus which was detected in all samples including the flock with no signs of ID or VFR. Sheep with ID had significantly higher numbers of D. nodosus (104-109 cells/g tissue) than those with H or VFR feet
Narrowband Biphotons: Generation, Manipulation, and Applications
In this chapter, we review recent advances in generating narrowband biphotons
with long coherence time using spontaneous parametric interaction in monolithic
cavity with cluster effect as well as in cold atoms with electromagnetically
induced transparency. Engineering and manipulating the temporal waveforms of
these long biphotons provide efficient means for controlling light-matter
quantum interaction at the single-photon level. We also review recent

The diversity of Type II supernova versus the similarity in their progenitors
High-quality collections of Type II supernova (SN) light curves are scarce because they evolve for hundreds of days, making follow-up observations time consuming and often extending over multiple observing seasons. In light of these difficulties, the diversity of SNe II is not fully understood. Here we present ultraviolet and optical photometry of 12 SNe II monitored by the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network during 2013 to 2014, and compare them with previously studied SNe having well-sampled light curves. We explore SN II diversity by searching for correlations between the slope of the linear light-curve decay after maximum light (historically used to divide SNe II into IIL and IIP) and other measured physical properties. While SNe IIL are found to be on average more luminous than SNe IIP, SNe IIL do not appear to synthesize more Ni than SNe IIP. Finally, optical nebular spectra obtained for several SNe in our sample are found to be consistent with models of red supergiant progenitors in the 12–16 M range. Consequently, SNe IIL appear not to account for the deficit of massive red supergiants as SN II progenitors.The authors acknowledge the ASASSN, La Silla Quest, and LOSS surveys for discovering new SNe that made this study possible.
