New absolute magnitude calibrations for W Ursa Majoris type binaries
Parallaxes of W UMa stars in the Hipparcos catalogue have been analyzed. 31 W
UMa stars, which have the most accurate parallaxes ()
which are neither associated with a photometric tertiary nor with evidence of a
visual companion, were selected for re-calibrating the
Period--Luminosity--Color (PLC) relation of W UMa stars. Using the Lutz--Kelker
(LK) bias corrected (most probable) parallaxes, periods (),
and colors (0.04<<1.28) of the 31 selected W UMa, the PLC relation
have been revised and re-calibrated. The difference between the old (revised
but not bias corrected) and the new (LK bias corrected) relations are almost
negligible in predicting the distances of W UMa stars up to about 100 parsecs.
But, it increases and may become intolerable as distances of stars increase.
Additionally, using and colors from 2MASS (Two
Micron All Sky Survey) data, a PLC relation working with infrared data was
derived. It can be used with infrared colors in the range
, and . Despite {\em 2MASS}
data are single epoch observations, which are not guaranteed at maximum
brightness of the W UMa stars, the established relation has been found
surprisingly consistent and reliable in predicting LK corrected distances of W

Luminosity-Colours relations for thin disc main-sequence stars
In this study we present the absolute magnitude calibrations of thin disc
main-sequence stars in the optical (), and in the near-infrared
(). Thin disc stars are identified by means of Padova isochrones, and
absolute magnitudes for the sample are evaluated via the newly reduced
Hipparcos data. The obtained calibrations cover a large range of spectral
types: from A0 to M4 in the optical and from A0 to M0 in the near-infrared.
Also, we discuss the of effects binary stars and evolved stars on the absolute
magnitude calibrations. The usage of these calibrations can be extended to the
estimation of galactic model parameters for the thin disc individually, in
order to compare these parameters with the corresponding ones estimated by
statistics (which provides galactic model parameters for thin
and thick discs, and halo simultaneously) to test any degeneracy between them.
The calibrations can also be used in other astrophysical researches where

SDSS Absolute Magnitudes for Thin Disc Stars based on Trigonometric Parallaxes
We present a new luminosity-colour relation based on trigonometric parallaxes
for thin disc main-sequence stars in SDSS photometry. We matched stars from the
newly reduced Hipparcos catalogue with the ones taken from 2MASS All-Sky
Catalogue of Point Sources, and applied a series of constraints, i.e. relative
parallax errors (), metallicity
( dex), age ( Gyr) and surface gravity
(), and obtained a sample of thin disc main-sequence stars. Then, we
used our previous transformation equations (Bilir et al. 2008a) between SDSS
and 2MASS photometries and calibrated the absolute magnitudes to the
and colours. The transformation formulae between 2MASS
and SDSS photometries along with the absolute magnitude calibration provide

Comparison of immature and mature bone marrow-derived dendritic cells by atomic force microscopy
A comparative study of immature and mature bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) was first performed through an atomic force microscope (AFM) to clarify differences of their nanostructure and adhesion force. AFM images revealed that the immature BMDCs treated by granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor plus IL-4 mainly appeared round with smooth surface, whereas the mature BMDCs induced by lipopolysaccharide displayed an irregular shape with numerous pseudopodia or lamellapodia and ruffles on the cell membrane besides becoming larger, flatter, and longer. AFM quantitative analysis further showed that the surface roughness of the mature BMDCs greatly increased and that the adhesion force of them was fourfold more than that of the immature BMDCs. The nano-features of the mature BMDCs were supported by a high level of IL-12 produced from the mature BMDCs and high expression of MHC-II on the surface of them. These findings provide a new insight into the nanostructure of the immature and mature BMDCs
Green Plants in the Red: A Baseline Global Assessment for the IUCN Sampled Red List Index for Plants
Plants provide fundamental support systems for life on Earth and are the basis for all terrestrial ecosystems; a decline in plant diversity will be detrimental to all other groups of organisms including humans. Decline in plant diversity has been hard to quantify, due to the huge numbers of known and yet to be discovered species and the lack of an adequate baseline assessment of extinction risk against which to track changes. The biodiversity of many remote parts of the world remains poorly known, and the rate of new assessments of extinction risk for individual plant species approximates the rate at which new plant species are described. Thus the question ‘How threatened are plants?’ is still very difficult to answer accurately. While completing assessments for each species of plant remains a distant prospect, by assessing a randomly selected sample of species the Sampled Red List Index for Plants gives, for the first time, an accurate view of how threatened plants are across the world. It represents the first key phase of ongoing efforts to monitor the status of the world’s plants. More than 20% of plant species assessed are threatened with extinction, and the habitat with the most threatened species is overwhelmingly tropical rain forest, where the greatest threat to plants is anthropogenic habitat conversion, for arable and livestock agriculture, and harvesting of natural resources. Gymnosperms (e.g. conifers and cycads) are the most threatened group, while a third of plant species included in this study have yet to receive an assessment or are so poorly known that we cannot yet ascertain whether they are threatened or not. This study provides a baseline assessment from which trends in the status of plant biodiversity can be measured and periodically reassessed
Distances and ages of globular clusters using Hipparcos parallaxes of local subdwarfs
We discuss the impact of Population II and Globular Cluster (GCs) stars on
the derivation of the age of the Universe, and on the study of the formation
and early evolution of galaxies, our own in particular. The long-standing
problem of the actual distance scale to Population II stars and GCs is
addressed, and a variety of different methods commonly used to derive distances
to Population II stars are briefly reviewed. Emphasis is given to the
discussion of distances and ages for GCs derived using Hipparcos parallaxes of
local subdwarfs. Results obtained by different authors are slightly different,
depending on different assumptions about metallicity scale, reddenings, and
corrections for undetected binaries. These and other uncertainties present in
the method are discussed. Finally, we outline progress expected in the near

Colouration in amphibians as a reflection of nutritional status : the case of tree frogs in Costa Rica
Colouration has been considered a cue for mating success in many species; ornaments in males often are related to carotenoid mobilization towards feathers and/or skin and can signal general health and nutrition status. However, there are several factors that can also link with status, such as physiological blood parameters and body condition, but there is not substantial evidence which supports the existence of these relationships and interactions in anurans. This study evaluated how body score and blood values interact with colouration in free-range Agalychnis callidryas and Agalychnis annae males. We found significant associations between body condition and plasmatic proteins and haematocrit, as well as between body condition and colour values from the chromaticity diagram. We also demonstrated that there is a significant relation between the glucose and plasmatic protein values that were reflected in the ventral colours of the animals, and haematocrit inversely affected most of those colour values. Significant differences were found between species as well as between populations of A. callidryas, suggesting that despite colour variation, there are also biochemical differences within animals from the same species located in different regions. These data provide information on underlying factors for colouration of male tree frogs in nature, provide insights about the dynamics of several nutrients in the amphibian model and how this could affect the reproductive output of the animals
Membrane TNF confers protection to acute mycobacterial infection
BACKGROUND: Tumour necrosis factor (TNF) is crucial for the control of mycobacterial infection as TNF deficient (KO) die rapidly of uncontrolled infection with necrotic pneumonia. Here we investigated the role of membrane TNF for host resistance in knock-in mice with a non-cleavable and regulated allele (mem-TNF). METHODS: C57BL/6, TNF KO and mem-TNF mice were infected with M. tuberculosis H37Rv (Mtb at 100 CFU by intranasal administration) and the survival, bacterial load, lung pathology and immunological parameters were investigated. Bone marrow and lymphocytes transfers were used to test the role of membrane TNF to confer resistance to TNF KO mice. RESULTS: While TNF-KO mice succumbed to infection within 4–5 weeks, mem-TNF mice recruited normally T cells and macrophages, developed mature granuloma in the lung and controlled acute Mtb infection. However, during the chronic phase of infection mem-TNF mice succumbed to disseminated infection with necrotic pneumonia at about 150 days. Reconstitution of irradiated TNF-KO mice with mem-TNF derived bone marrow cells, but not with lymphocytes, conferred host resistance to Mtb infection in TNF-KO mice. CONCLUSION: Membrane expressed TNF is sufficient to allow cell-cell signalling and control of acute Mtb infection. Bone marrow cells, but not lymphocytes from mem-TNF mice confer resistance to infection in TNF-KO mice. Long-term infection control with chronic inflammation likely disrupting TNF mediated cell-cell signalling, additionally requires soluble TNF
Structural Olfactory Nerve Changes in Patients Suffering from Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension
BACKGROUND: Complications of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) are usually caused by elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). In a similar way as in the optic nerve, elevated ICP could also compromise the olfactory nerve system. On the other side, there is growing evidence that an extensive lymphatic network system around the olfactory nerves could be disturbed in cerebrospinal fluid disorders like IIH. The hypothesis that patients with IIH suffer from hyposmia has been suggested in the past. However, this has not been proven in clinical studies yet. This pilot study investigates whether structural changes of the olfactory nerve system can be detected in patients with IIH. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Twenty-three patients with IIH and 23 matched controls were included. Olfactory bulb volume (OBV) and sulcus olfactorius (OS) depth were calculated by magnetic resonance techniques. While mean values of total OBV (128.7±38.4 vs. 130.0±32.6 mm(3), p=0.90) and mean OS depth (8.5±1.2 vs. 8.6±1.1 mm, p=0.91) were similar in both groups, Pearson correlation showed that patients with a shorter medical history IIH revealed a smaller OBV (r=0.53, p<0.01). In untreated symptomatic patients (n=7), the effect was greater (r=0.76, p<0.05). Patients who suffered from IIH for less than one year (n=8), total OBV was significantly smaller than in matched controls (116.6±24.3 vs. 149.3±22.2 mm(3), p=0.01). IIH patients with visual disturbances (n=21) revealed a lower OS depth than patients without (8.3±0.9 vs. 10.8±1.0 mm, p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The results suggest that morphological changes of the olfactory nerve system could be present in IIH patients at an early stage of disease
