Photoproduction of Pseudoscalar Mesons
Experiments that study the photoproduction of pseudoscalar mesons; pions,
etas and kaons, have the potential to increase our knowledge of baryon and
hyperon resonance properties. Recent experiments at JLab, Mainz, GRAAL, and
Bonn are beginning to produce results in the form of polarization and asymmetry
measurements and determinations of the differential and integrated cross
sections. These new data are essential to the performance of Partial-Wave
Analyses that are less model dependent and coupled-channels calculations that
incorporate unitarity dynamically, combining hadronic reaction channels together
with electromagnetic processes. This approach is necessary to extract resonance
properties and may lead to the identification of missing, but predicted,
resonances. Some recent experimental and phenomenological results for single
and double pseudoscalar meson photoproduction are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of Particles and Nuclei, PANIC2002,

Photoproduction of pions and properties of baryon resonances from a Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis
Masses, widths and photocouplings of baryon resonances are determined in a
coupled-channel partial wave analysis of a large variety of data. The
Bonn-Gatchina partial wave formalism is extended to include a decomposition of
t- and u-exchange amplitudes into individual partial waves. The multipole
transition amplitudes for and are
given and compared to results from other analyses.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figure
P-wave excited baryons from pion- and photo-induced hyperon production
We report evidence for , , ,
, , and , and find
indications that might have a companion state at 1970\,MeV. The
controversial is not seen. The evidence is derived from a
study of data on pion- and photo-induced hyperon production, but other data are
included as well. Most of the resonances reported here were found in the
Karlsruhe-Helsinki (KH84) and the Carnegie-Mellon (CM) analyses but were
challenged recently by the Data Analysis Center at GWU. Our analysis is
constrained by the energy independent scattering amplitudes from either
KH84 or GWU. The two amplitudes from KH84 or GWU, respectively, lead to
slightly different branching ratios of contributing resonances but the
debated resonances are required in both series of fits.Comment: 22 pages, 28 figures. Some additional sets of data are adde
Finite Cut Approximation for the Form Factor
Assuming the length of the cut to be finite and approximating the
integrated amplitude by a constant, we derive an expression for the form factor which is very close to that given by a simple pole. The
specific predictions of the obtained form factor for the region of small
momentum transfer are discussed along the lines of the Goldberger-Treiman
relation.Comment: 17 pages, Late
Real and Virtual Compton Scattering: the nucleon polarisabilities
We give an overview of low-energy Compton scattering (gamma^(*) p --> gamma
p) with a real or virtual incoming photon. These processes allow the
investigation of one of the fundamental properties of the nucleon, i.e. how its
internal structure deforms under an applied static electromagnetic field. Our
knowledge of nucleon polarisabilities and their generalization to non-zero
four-momentum transfer will be reviewed, including the presently ongoing
experiments and future perspectives.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Minireview/Proceedings of "Many-Body Structure

Photoproduction of mesons off nuclei
Recent results for the photoproduction of mesons off nuclei are reviewed.
These experiments have been performed for two major lines of research related
to the properties of the strong interaction. The investigation of nucleon
resonances requires light nuclei as targets for the extraction of the isospin
composition of the electromagnetic excitations. This is done with quasi-free
meson photoproduction off the bound neutron and supplemented with the
measurement of coherent photoproduction reactions, serving as spin and/or
isospin filters. Furthermore, photoproduction from light and heavy nuclei is a
very efficient tool for the study of the interactions of mesons with nuclear
matter and the in-medium properties of hadrons. Experiments are currently
rapidly developing due to the combination of high quality tagged (and
polarized) photon beams with state-of-the-art 4pi detectors and polarized
targets
Indirect search for dark matter: prospects for GLAST
Possible indirect detection of neutralino, through its gamma-ray annihilation
product, by the forthcoming GLAST satellite from our galactic halo, M31, M87
and the dwarf galaxies Draco and Sagittarius is studied. Gamma-ray fluxes are
evaluated for the two representative energy thresholds, 0.1 GeV and 1.0 GeV, at
which the spatial resolution of GLAST varies considerably. Apart from dwarfs
which are described either by a modified Plummer profile or by a
tidally-truncated King profiles, fluxes are compared for halos with central
cusps and cores. It is demonstrated that substructures, irrespective of their
profiles, enhance the gamma-ray emission only marginally. The expected
gamma-ray intensity above 1 GeV at high galactic latitudes is consistent with
the residual emission derived from EGRET data if the density profile has a
central core and the neutralino mass is less than 50 GeV, whereas for a central
cusp only a substantial enhancement would explain the observations. From M31,
the flux can be detected above 0.1 GeV and 1.0 GeV by GLAST only if the
neutralino mass is below 300 GeV and if the density profile has a central cusp,
case in which a significant boost in the gamma-ray emission is produced by the
central black hole. For Sagittarius, the flux above 0.1 GeV is detectable by
GLAST provided the neutralino mass is below 50 GeV. From M87 and Draco the
fluxes are always below the sensitivity limit of GLAST.Comment: 14 Pages, 7 Figures, 3 Tables, version to appear on Physical Review
Evaluation of the polarization observables I^S and I^C in the reaction gamma p --> pi^0 eta p
We evaluate the polarization observables I^S and I^C for the reaction gamma p
--> pi^0 eta p, using a chiral unitary framework developed earlier. The I^S and
I^C observables have been recently measured for the first time by the
CBELSA/TAPS collaboration. The theoretical predictions of I^S and I^C, given
for altogether 18 angle dependent functions, are in good agreement with the
measurements. Also, the asymmetry dSigma/dcos(theta) evaluated here agrees with
the data. We show the importance of the Delta(1700)D33 resonance and its S-wave
decay into eta Delta(1232). The result can be considered as a further
confirmation of the dynamical nature of this resonance. At the highest
energies, deviations of the predictions from the data start to become
noticeable, which leaves room for additional processes and resonances such as a
Delta(1940)D33. We also point out how to further improve the calculation.Comment: Version accepted for publication by the European Physical Journal A,

Quasi-free photoproduction of η-mesons off 3He nuclei
Quasi-free photoproduction of η-mesons has been measured off nucleons bound in 3He nuclei for incident photon energies from the threshold region up to 1.4 GeV. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with an almost 4π covering electromagnetic calorimeter, combining the TAPS and Crystal Ball detectors. The η-mesons were detected in coincidence with the recoil nucleons. This allowed a comparison of the production cross section off quasi-free protons and quasi-free neutrons and a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state, eliminating effects from nuclear Fermi motion. In the S11(1535) resonance peak, the data agree with the neutron/proton cross section ratio extracted from measurements with deuteron targets. More importantly, the prominent structure observed in photoproduction off quasi-free neutrons bound in the deuteron is also clearly observed. Its parameters (width, strength) are consistent with the expectations from the deuteron results. On an absolute scale the cross sections for both quasi-free protons and neutrons are suppressed with respect to the deuteron target pointing to significant nuclear final-state interaction effects
Properties of baryon resonances from a multichannel partial wave analysis
Properties of nucleon and resonances are derived from a multichannel
partial wave analysis. The statistical significance of pion and photo-induced
inelastic reactions off protons are studied in a multichannel partial-wave
