    Preliminary X-ray analysis of a new crystal form of the vanadium-dependent bromoperoxidase from Corallina officinalis.

    Journal ArticleResearch Support, Non-U.S. Gov'tA new crystal form of the vanadium-dependent bromoperoxidase from Corallina officinalis has been obtained. The crystals exhibit a 'teardrop' morphology and are grown from 2 M ammonium dihydrogen phosphate pH and diffract to beyond 1.7 A resolution. They are in tetragonal space group P4222 with unit-cell dimensions of a = b = 201.9, c = 178.19 A, alpha = beta = gamma = 90 degrees. A 2.3 A resolution native data set has been collected at the Hamburg Synchrotron. A mercury derivative data set has also been collected, and the heavy-atom positions have been determined. The self-rotation function and the positions of the heavy atoms are consistent with the molecule being a dodecamer with local 23 symmetry.Biotechnology and Biological Research Council

    Preconceptional and gestational weight trajectories and risk of delivering a small-for-gestational-age baby in rural Gambia.

    Background: Maternal nutritional status is a key determinant of small for gestational age (SGA), but some knowledge gaps remain, particularly regarding the role of the energy balance entering pregnancy.Objective: We investigated how preconceptional and gestational weight trajectories (summarized by individual-level traits) are associated with SGA risk in rural Gambia.Design: The sample comprised 670 women in a trial with serial weight data (7310 observations) that were available before and during pregnancy. Individual trajectories from 6 mo before conception to 30 wk of gestation were produced with the use of multilevel modeling. Summary traits were expressed as weight z scores [weight z score at 3 mo preconception (zwt-3 mo), weight z score at conception, weight z score at 3 mo postconception, weight z score at 7 mo postconception (zwt+7 mo), and conditional measures that represented the change from the preceding time] and were related to SGA risk with the use of Poisson regression with confounder adjustment; linear splines were used to account for nonlinearity.Results: Maternal weight at each time point had a consistent nonlinear relation with SGA risk. For example, the zwt-3 mo estimate was stronger in women with values ≤0.5 (RR: 0.736; 95% CI: 0.594, 0.910) than in women with values >0.5 (RR: 0.920; 95% CI: 0.682, 1.241). The former group had the highest observed SGA prevalence. Focusing on weight change, only conditional zwt+7 mo was associated with SGA and only in women with values >-0.5 (RR: 0.579; 95% CI: 0.463, 0.724).Conclusions: Protection against delivering an SGA neonate offered by greater preconceptional or gestational weight may be most pronounced in more undernourished and vulnerable women. Independent of this possibility, greater second- and third-trimester weight gain beyond a threshold may be protective. This trial was registered at http://www.isrctn.com/ as ISRCTN49285450

    Sensitivity analysis and determination of free relaxation parameters for the weakly-compressible MRT-LBM schemes

    It is well-known that there exist several free relaxation parameters in the MRT-LBM. Although these parameters have been tuned via linear analysis, the sensitivity analysis of these parameters and other related parameters are still not sufficient for detecting the behaviors of the dispersion and dissipation relations of the MRT-LBM. Previous researches have shown that the bulk dissipation in the MRT-LBM induces a significant over-damping of acoustic disturbances. This indicates that MRT-LBM cannot be used to obtain the correct behavior of pressure fluctuations because of the fixed bulk relaxation parameter. In order to cure this problem, an effective algorithm has been proposed for recovering the linearized Navier-Stokes equations from the linearized MRT-LBM. The recovered L-NSE appear as in matrix form with arbitrary order of the truncation errors with respect to δt{\delta}t. Then, in wave-number space, the first/second-order sensitivity analyses of matrix eigenvalues are used to address the sensitivity of the wavenumber magnitudes to the dispersion-dissipation relations. By the first-order sensitivity analysis, the numerical behaviors of the group velocity of the MRT-LBM are first obtained. Afterwards, the distribution sensitivities of the matrix eigenvalues corresponding to the linearized form of the MRT-LBM are investigated in the complex plane. Based on the sensitivity analysis and the recovered L-NSE, we propose some simplified optimization strategies to determine the free relaxation parameters in the MRT-LBM. Meanwhile, the dispersion and dissipation relations of the optimal MRT-LBM are quantitatively compared with the exact dispersion and dissipation relations. At last, some numerical validations on classical acoustic benchmark problems are shown to assess the new optimal MRT-LBM

    Severe horn-gore injury in a 5-year-old Bunaji bull and a 10-month-old Yankasa ram-lamb: Case reports

    This paper reports two scenarios whereby goring injury sustained by a Bunaji bull and a Yankasa lamb were managed by pastoralists before the cases were presented to the Large Animal Clinic Unit of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Anamnesis of the cases presented was that the bull sustained injury 4 days prior to presentation while attempting to mount a cow. The lamb sustained goring injury inflicted by a bull 3 days prior to presentation. The herdsman unwillingly revealed that he had used procaine penicillin and an herbal preparation (ethnoveterinary medicine) prior to presentation of the bull. ‘Man-shanu’was applied topically on the horn-gore injury of the lamb by the client. The skin and muscles of both the bull and lamb were also severely lacerated. Evacuation of the haematoma, herbal (ethnoveterinary) preparation and repair of lacerated tissues were successfully performed in the bull while there was an unsuccessful attempt to manage the goring injury in the lamb. The clients were advised to avoid managing cases themselves and to promptly report cases to a nearby Veterinary Clinic.Keywords: Goring injury, Hematoma, Trauma

    National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank: A standard based biospecimen and clinical data resource to enhance translational research

    Background: Advances in translational research have led to the need for well characterized biospecimens for research. The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank is an initiative which collects annotated datasets relevant to human mesothelioma to develop an enterprising biospecimen resource to fulfill researchers' need. Methods: The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank architecture is based on three major components: (a) common data elements (based on College of American Pathologists protocol and National North American Association of Central Cancer Registries standards), (b) clinical and epidemiologic data annotation, and (c) data query tools. These tools work interoperably to standardize the entire process of annotation. The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank tool is based upon the caTISSUE Clinical Annotation Engine, developed by the University of Pittsburgh in cooperation with the Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid™ (caBIG™, see http://cabig.nci.nih.gov). This application provides a web-based system for annotating, importing and searching mesothelioma cases. The underlying information model is constructed utilizing Unified Modeling Language class diagrams, hierarchical relationships and Enterprise Architect software. Result: The database provides researchers real-time access to richly annotated specimens and integral information related to mesothelioma. The data disclosed is tightly regulated depending upon users' authorization and depending on the participating institute that is amenable to the local Institutional Review Board and regulation committee reviews. Conclusion: The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank currently has over 600 annotated cases available for researchers that include paraffin embedded tissues, tissue microarrays, serum and genomic DNA. The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank is a virtual biospecimen registry with robust translational biomedical informatics support to facilitate basic science, clinical, and translational research. Furthermore, it protects patient privacy by disclosing only de-identified datasets to assure that biospecimens can be made accessible to researchers. © 2008 Amin et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

    Govindjee, the founding editor of the Historical Corner of Photosynthesis Research, invited me 3 years ago to tell the story of why I left Melvin Calvin’s laboratory in the mid 1950s long before the 1961 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Calvin for the path of carbon in photosynthesis. I have already written my scientific perspective on this topic (see Benson (Photosynth Res 73:29–49, 2002); also see Bassham (Photosynth Res 76:35–52, 2003) as he was also a major player in this research). Here, I present my recollections of my last days in the old radiation laboratory (ORL) at Berkeley, California. References have been added by Govindjee for the benefit of the readers

    Quantum advantage by relational queries about physically realizable equivalence classes

    Relational quantum queries are sometimes capable to effectively decide between collections of mutually exclusive elementary cases without completely resolving and determining those individual instances. Thereby the set of mutually exclusive elementary cases is effectively partitioned into equivalence classes pertinent to the respective query.
