    Almost-zero-energy Eigenvalues of Some Broken Supersymmetric Systems

    For a quantum mechanical system with broken supersymmetry, we present a simple method of determining the ground state when the corresponding energy eigenvalue is sufficiently small. A concise formula is derived for the approximate ground state energy in an associated, well-separated, asymmetric double-well-type potential. Our discussion is also relevant for the analysis of the fermion bound state in the kink-antikink scalar background.Comment: revised version, to be pubilshed in PR

    Cross sections for Coulomb and nuclear breakup of three-body halo nuclei

    All possible dissociation cross sections for the loosely bound three-body halo nuclei 6^6He (n+n+α\alpha) and 11^{11}Li (n+n+9^{9}Li) are computed as functions of target and beam energy. Both Coulomb and nuclear interactions are included in the same theoretical framework. The measurements agree with the calculations for energies above 100 Mev/nucleon.     Momentum distributions and reaction mechanisms for breakup of two--neutron halos

    A theoretical model able to describe fragmentation reactions of three--body halo nuclei on different targets, from light to heavy, is used to compute neutron and core momentum distributions. Both Coulomb and nuclear interactions are simultaneously included. We specify the different reaction mechanisms related to various processes.     Phase equivalent potentials for three-body halos

    We compare the properties of three-body systems obtained with two-body potentials with Pauli forbidden states and with the corresponding phase equivalent two-body potentials. In the first case the forbidden states are explicitly excluded in the calculation. Differences arise due to the off-shell properties of these on-shell equivalent potentials. We use the adiabatic hyperspherical method to formulate a practical prescription to exclude Pauli forbidden states in three-body calculations. Schematic as well as realistic potentials are used.     A strongly fluctuating quasi-two-dimensional insulator

    The authors describe neutron-scattering data for SrCr8-xGa4+xO19, a layered compound containing planes of S=3/2 Cr3+ ions which form Kagome lattices. Despite strong antiferromagnetic interactions (θCW≈-500 K), fluctuations account for more than 75% of the free ion moment at 1.5 K. The spectrum (averaged over reciprocal space) is gapless and resembles that of a 2D long-range-ordered antiferromagnet, as does the low-temperature specific heat of the compound. Even so, the static correlation length does not exceed 7±2 Å. Monte-Carlo simulations of the antiferromagnetic three-state Potts model on the Kagome lattice show that this model does not have a finite temperature phase-transition. Even at T=0, there does not seem to be true long-range antiferromagnetic-order. However, the magnetic correlations decay algebraically rather than exponentially. The implications of this result for the ground-state of SrCr8-xGa4+xO19 is discussed

    Maternal pregnancy vitamin D supplementation increases offspring bone formation in response to mechanical loading : findings from a MAVIDOS trial sub-study

    The Maternal Vitamin D Osteoporosis (MAVIDOS) trial reported higher total body bone mineral content in winter-born infants of mothers receiving vitamin D supplementation [1000 IU/day cholecalciferol] compared with placebo from 14 weeks gestation until delivery. This sub-study aimed to determine whether antenatal vitamin D supplementation altered postnatal bone formation in response to mechanical stimulation. Thirty-one children born to MAVIDOS participants randomised to either placebo (n=19) or cholecalciferol (n=12) were recruited at age 4-5 years. Children received whole body vibration (WBV) for 10 minutes on 5 consecutive days. Fasting blood samples for bone homeostasis, 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD), parathyroid hormone (PTH), and bone turnover markers (Pro-collagen Type 1 N-terminal propeptide, P1NP; Cross-linked C-telopeptide of Type I Collagen, CTX) were collected pre-WBV and on day 8 (D8). Mean changes (D) in P1NP (ng/ml) between baseline and D8 in the vitamin-D intervention and placebo groups were 40.6 and -92.6 respectively and mean changes (Δ) in CTX (ng/ml) were 0.034 (intervention) and -0.084 (placebo) respectively. Between-group DP1NP difference was 133.2ng/ml [95% CI 0.4, 266.0; p=0.049] and ΔCTX 0.05ng/ml (95% CI -0.159, 0.26ng/mL; p=0.62). Antenatal vitamin-D supplementation resulted in increased P1NP in response to WBV, suggesting early life vitamin D supplementation increases the anabolic response of bone to mechanical loading in children

    Soft x-ray spectroscopy experiments on the near K-edge of B in MB2 (M=Mg, Al, Ta, and Nb)

    Soft X-ray absorption and emission measurements are performed for the K- edge of B in MB2_2 (M=Mg, Al, Ta and Nb). Unique feature of MgB2_2 with a high density of B 2pxy(σ)p_{xy}(\sigma)-state below and above the Fermi edge, which extends to 1 eV above the edge, is confirmed. In contrast, the B 2pp density of states in AlB2_2 and TaB2_2, both of occupied and unoccupied states, decreased linearly towards the Fermi energy and showed a dip at the Fermi energy. Furthermore, there is a broadening of the peaks with pσp\sigma-character in XES and XAS of AlB2_2, which is due to the increase of three dimensionality in the pσp\sigma-band in AlB2_2. The DOS of NbB2_2 has a dip just below the Fermi energy. The present results indicate that the large DOS of B-2pσp\sigma states near the Fermi energy are crucial for the superconductivity of MgB2_2.Comment: 3 pages text and 4 pages figures. accepted for publication to Phys.     Rapidly Rotating Fermions in an Anisotropic Trap

    We consider a cold gas of non-interacting fermions in a two dimensional harmonic trap with two different trapping frequencies ωxωy\omega_x \leq \omega_y, and discuss the effect of rotation on the density profile. Depending on the rotation frequency Ω\Omega and the trap anisotropy ωy/ωx\omega_y/\omega_x, the density profile assumes two qualitatively different shapes. For small anisotropy (ωy/ωx1+4Ω2/ωx2\omega_y/\omega_x \ll \sqrt{1+4 \Omega^2/\omega_x^2}), the density consists of elliptical plateaus of constant density, corresponding to Landau levels and is well described by a two dimensional local density approximation. For large anisotropy (ωy/ωx1+4Ω2/ωx2\omega_y/\omega_x \gg \sqrt{1+4 \Omega^2/\omega_x^2}), the density profile is Gaussian in the strong confining direction and semicircular with prominent Friedel oscillations in the weak direction. In this regime, a one dimensional local density approximation is well suited to describe the system. The crossover between the two regimes is smooth where the step structure between the Landau level edges turn into Friedel oscillations. Increasing the temperature causes the step structure or the Friedel oscillations to wash out leaving a Boltzmann gas density profile.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    Behavior problems and prevalence of asthma symptoms among Brazilian children.

    OBJECTIVE: Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood and has been designated a public health problem due to the increase in its prevalence in recent decades, the amount of health service expenditure it absorbs and an absence of consensus about its etiology. The relationships among psychosocial factors and the occurrence, symptomatology, and severity of asthma have recently been considered. There is still controversy about the association between asthma and a child's mental health, since the pathways through which this relationship is established are complex and not well researched. This study aims to investigate whether behavior problems are associated with the prevalence of asthma symptoms in a large urban center in Latin America. METHODS: It is a cross-section study of 869 children between 6 and 12 years old, residents of Salvador, Brazil. The International Study of Allergy and Asthma in Childhood (ISAAC) instrument was used to evaluate prevalence of asthma symptoms. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was employed to evaluate behavioral problems. RESULTS: 19.26% (n=212) of the children presented symptoms of asthma. 35% were classified as having clinical behavioral problems. Poisson's robust regression model demonstrated a statistically significant association between the presence of behavioral problems and asthma symptoms occurrence (PR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.10-1.85). CONCLUSION: These results suggest an association between behavioral problems and pediatric asthma, and support the inclusion of mental health care in the provision of services for asthma morbidity

    Comprehensive calculations of three--body breakup cross sections

    We present in detail a theoretical model for fragmentation reactions of three--body halo nuclei. The different reaction mechanisms corresponding to the different processes are described and discussed. Coulomb and nuclear interactions are simultaneously included and the method is therefore applicable for any target, light, intermediate and heavy. Absolute values of many differential cross sections are then available as function of beam energy and target. We apply the method to fragmentation of 6^6He and 11^{11}Li on C, Cu and Pb. A large variety of observables, cross sections and momentum distributions, are computed.
