Provenance of the upper Eocene Castle Rock Conglomerate, south Denver Basin, Colorado, U.S.A.
The Castle Rock Conglomerate contains distinctive clasts from the Colorado Front Range, and when combined with detrital zircon ages, the unit can be subdivided into two lithofacies. Precambrian quartzites and stretched-pebble conglomerates from Coal Creek Canyon (to the northwest of the Castle Rock Conglomerate outcrop belt) and detrital zircons from Precambrian and Tertiary igneous rocks identify a northern provenance with detritus derived from tens of kilometers northwest of Denver, Colorado. A second source, composed of mainly granite from the Pikes Peak batholith, lies in the southern Front Range west of the Castle Rock Conglomerate outcrop belt. Both the north and west lithofacies can be mapped in the Castle Rock Conglomerate outcrop belt by using the presence (north) and absence (west) of Coal Creek Canyon quartzite clasts. This distinction is confirmed by detrital zircon ages. The north lithofacies dominates the present-day, northernmost outcrops, but dilution and interbedding with west lithofacies increase as the southeast-flowing basin axial paleodrainage meets piedmont tributaries that carried Pikes Peak batholith detritus from the west and southwest. The basin axial drainage transported coarse conglomerate southward about 120 km during Castle Rock Conglomerate deposition (36.7-34.0 Ma). The Precambrian quartzite exposed in Coal Creek Canyon is interpreted to be an important point source that can be useful in provenance studies of sediments shed from the Colorado Front Range. Additionally, detrital zircons from Laramide-age igneous rocks show potential for improved stratigraphic resolution in Paleogene strata of the Denver Basin
The XMM/BeppoSAX observation of Mkn 841
Mkn 841 has been observed simultaneously by XMM and BeppoSAX in January 2001.
Due to operational contingency, the 30ks XMM observation was split into two
parts, separated by about 15 hours. We first report the presence of a narrow
iron line which appears to be rapidly variable between the two pointings,
requiring a non-standard interpretation. We then focus on the analysis of the
broad band (0.3-200 keV) continuum using the XMM/EPIC, RGS and SAX/PDS data.
The Mkn 841 spectrum is well fitted by a comptonization model in a geometry
more photon-fed than a simple slab geometry above a passive disk. It presents a
relatively large reflection (R>2) which does not agree with an apparently weak
iron line. It also show the presence of a strong soft excess wellfitted by a
comptonized spectrum in a cool plasma, suggesting the presence of a
multi-temperature corona.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Proc. of the meeting: "The Restless High-Energy

Event-by-event fluctuations in collective quantities
We discuss an event-by-event fluctuation analysis of particle production in
heavy ion collisions. We compare different approaches to the evaluation of the
event-by-event dynamical fluctuations in quantities defined on groups of
particles, such quantities as mean transverse momentum, transverse momentum
spectra slope, strength of anisotropic flow, etc.. The direct computation of
the dynamical fluctuations and the sub-event method are discussed in more
detail. We also show how the fluctuation in different variables can be related
to each other.Comment: LaTex, 14 pages and 5 figures. 2 references adde
Reduced contextually induced muscle thermogenesis in rats with calorie restriction and lower aerobic fitness but not monogenic obesity
We have previously identified predator odor as a potent stimulus activating thermogenesis in skeletal muscle in rats. As this may prove relevant for energy balance and weight loss, the current study investigated whether skeletal muscle thermogenesis was altered with negative energy balance, obesity propensity seen in association with low intrinsic aerobic fitness, and monogenic obesity. First, weight loss subsequent to three weeks of 50% calorie restriction suppressed the muscle thermogenic response to predator odor. Next, we compared rats bred based on artificial selection for intrinsic aerobic fitness—high- and low-capacity runners (HCR, LCR)—that display robust leanness and obesity propensity, respectively. Aerobically fit HCR showed enhanced predator odor-induced muscle thermogenesis relative to the less-fit LCR. This contrasted with the profound monogenic obesity displayed by rats homozygous for a loss of function mutation in Melanocortin 4 receptor (Mc4rK314X/K314X rats), which showed no discernable deficit in thermogenesis. Taken together, these data imply that body size or obesity per se are not associated with deficient muscle thermogenesis. Rather, the physiological phenotype associated with polygenic obesity propensity may encompass pleiotropic mechanisms in the thermogenic pathway. Adaptive thermogenesis associated with weight loss also likely alters muscle thermogenic mechanisms.</p
Bayesian Processing of Big Data using Log Homotopy Based Particle Flow Filters
Bayesian recursive estimation using large volumes of data is a challenging research topic. The problem becomes particularly complex for high dimensional non-linear state spaces. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based methods have been successfully used to solve such problems. The main issue when employing MCMC is the evaluation of the likelihood function at every iteration, which can become prohibitively expensive to compute. Alternative methods are therefore sought after to overcome this difficulty. One such method is the adaptive sequential MCMC (ASMCMC), where the use of the confidence sampling is proposed as a method to reduce the computational cost. The main idea is to make use of the concentration inequalities to sub-sample the measurements for which the likelihood terms are evaluated. However, ASMCMC methods require appropriate proposal distributions. In this work, we propose a novel ASMCMC framework in which log-homotopy based particle flow filters form adaptive proposals. We show the performance can be significantly enhanced by our proposed algorithm, while still maintaining a comparatively low processing overhead
Universality of Frequency and Field Scaling of the Conductivity Measured by Ac-Susceptibility of a Ybco-Film
Utilizing a novel and exact inversion scheme, we determine the complex linear
conductivity from the linear magnetic ac-susceptibility
which has been measured from 3\,mHz to 50\,MHz in fields between 0.4\,T and
4\,T applied parallel to the c-axis of a 250\,nm thin disk. The frequency
derivative of the phase and the dynamical scaling of
above and below provide clear evidence for a
continuous phase transition at to a generic superconducting state. Based
on the vortex-glass scaling model, the resulting critical exponents and
are close to those frequently obtained on films by other means and
associated with an 'isotropic' vortex glass. The field effect on
can be related to the increase of the glass coherence length,

Baryon Density Correlations in High Temperature Hadronic Matter
As part of an ongoing effort to characterize the high temperature phase of
QCD, in a numerical simulation using the staggered fermion scheme, we measure
the quark baryon density in the vicinity of a fixed test quark at high
temperature and compare it with similar measurements at low temperature and at
the crossover temperature. We find an extremely weak correlation at high
temperature, suggesting that small color singlet clusters are unimportant in
the thermal ensemble. We also find that at the total induced
quark number shows a surprisingly large component attributable to baryonic
screening. A companion simulation of a simple flux tube model produces similar
results and also suggests a plausible phenomenological scenario: As the
crossover temperature is approached from below, baryonic states proliferate.
Above the crossover temperature the mean size of color singlet clusters grows
explosively, resulting in an effective electrostatic deconfinement.Comment: 26 pp, RevTeX, 12 postscript figures, combined in a single shell

Considerations on rescattering effects for threshold photo- and electro-production of on deuteron
We show that for the S-state -production in processes and the rescattering effects due to the
transition: (or are cancelled
out due to the Pauli principle. The large values for these effects predicted in
the past may result from the fact that the spin structure of the corresponding
matrix element and the necessary antisymmetrization induced by the presence of
identical protons (or neutrons) in the intermediate state was not taken into
account accurately. One of the important consequences of these considerations
is that photo- and electro-production on deuteron near threshold can
bring direct information about elementary neutron amplitudes.Comment: Add a new sectio
Universal flow diagram for the magnetoconductance in disordered GaAs layers
The temperature driven flow lines of the diagonal and Hall magnetoconductance
data (G_{xx},G_{xy}) are studied in heavily Si-doped, disordered GaAs layers
with different thicknesses. The flow lines are quantitatively well described by
a recent universal scaling theory developed for the case of duality symmetry.
The separatrix G_{xy}=1 (in units e^2/h) separates an insulating state from a
spin-degenerate quantum Hall effect (QHE) state. The merging into the insulator
or the QHE state at low temperatures happens along a semicircle separatrix
G_{xx}^2+(G_{xy}-1)^2=1 which is divided by an unstable fixed point at
(G_{xx},G_{xy})=(1,1).Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Neutral Pion Photoproduction on Nuclei in Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory
Threshold neutral pion photoproduction on light nuclei is studied in the
framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory. We obtain a general formula for
the electric dipole amplitude in the special case of neutral pion
photoproduction on a nucleus. To third order in small momenta, the amplitude is
a sum of 2- and 3-body interactions with no undetermined parameters. With
reasonable input from the single nucleon sector, our result for neutral pion
photoproduction on the deuteron is in agreement with experiment.Comment: 24 pages, 4 uuencoded postscript figures, uses LaTex and epsf.tex.
