    Virtual structural health monitoring and remaining life prediction of steel bridges

    In this study a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system is combined with Bridge Weigh-in-Motion (B-WIM) measurements of the actual traffic loading on a bridge to carry out a fatigue damage calculation. The SHM system uses the 'Virtual Monitoring' concept, where all parts of the bridge that are not monitored directly using sensors, are 'virtually' monitored using the load information and a calibrated Finite Element (FE) model of the bridge. Besides providing the actual traffic loading on the bridge, the measurements are used to calibrate the SHM system and to update the FE model of the bridge. The newly developed Virtual Monitoring concept then uses the calibrated FE model of the bridge to calculate stress ranges and hence to monitor fatigue at locations on the bridge not directly monitored. The combination of a validated numerical model of the bridge with the actual site-specific traffic loading allows a more accurate prediction of the cumulative fatigue damage at the time of measurement and facilitates studies on the implications of traffic growth.     Correlations and scaling in one-dimensional heat conduction

    We examine numerically the full spatio-temporal correlation functions for all hydrodynamic quantities for the random collision model introduced recently. The autocorrelation function of the heat current, through the Kubo formula, gives a thermal conductivity exponent of 1/3 in agreement with the analytical prediction and previous numerical work. Remarkably, this result depends crucially on the choice of boundary conditions: for periodic boundary conditions (as opposed to open boundary conditions with heat baths) the exponent is approximately 1/2. This is expected to be a generic feature of systems with singular transport coefficients. All primitive hydrodynamic quantities scale with the dynamic critical exponent predicted analytically.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure

    Renormalization group and nonequilibrium action in stochastic field theory

    We investigate the renormalization group approach to nonequilibrium field theory. We show that it is possible to derive nontrivial renormalization group flow from iterative coarse graining of a closed-time-path action. This renormalization group is different from the usual in quantum field theory textbooks, in that it describes nontrivial noise and dissipation. We work out a specific example where the variation of the closed-time-path action leads to the so-called Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, and show that the renormalization group obtained by coarse graining this action, agrees with the dynamical renormalization group derived by directly coarse graining the equations of motion.Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures included in the text.     Dynamics near the critical point: the hot renormalization group in quantum field theory

    The perturbative approach to the description of long wavelength excitations at high temperature breaks down near the critical point of a second order phase transition. We study the \emph{dynamics} of these excitations in a relativistic scalar field theory at and near the critical point via a renormalization group approach at high temperature and an ϵ\epsilon expansion in d=5ϵd=5-\epsilon space-time dimensions. The long wavelength physics is determined by a non-trivial fixed point of the renormalization group. At the critical point we find that the dispersion relation and width of quasiparticles of momentum pp is ωppz\omega_p \sim p^{z} and Γp(z1)ωp\Gamma_p \sim (z-1) \omega_p respectively, the group velocity of quasiparticles vgpz1v_g \sim p^{z-1} vanishes in the long wavelength limit at the critical point. Away from the critical point for TTcT\gtrsim T_c we find ωpξz[1+(pξ)2z]1/2\omega_p \sim \xi^{-z}[1+(p \xi)^{2z}]^{{1/2}} and Γp(z1)ωp(pξ)2z1+(pξ)2z\Gamma_p \sim (z-1) \omega_p \frac{(p \xi)^{2z}}{1+(p \xi)^{2z}} with ξ\xi the finite temperature correlation length ξTTcν \xi \propto |T-T_c|^{-\nu}. The new \emph{dynamical} exponent zz results from anisotropic renormalization in the spatial and time directions. For a theory with O(N) symmetry we find z=1+ϵN+2(N+8)2+O(ϵ2)z=1+ \epsilon \frac{N+2}{(N+8)^2}+\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^2). Critical slowing down, i.e, a vanishing width in the long-wavelength limit, and the validity of the quasiparticle picture emerge naturally from this analysis.Comment: Discussion on new dynamical universality class.     Clinical predictors of 3- and 6-month outcome for mild traumatic brain injury patients with a negative head CT scan in the emergency department: A TRACK-TBI pilot study

    Aconsiderable subset of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) patients fail to return to baseline functional status at or beyond 3 months postinjury. Identifying at-risk patients for poor outcome in the emergency department (ED) may improve surveillance strategies and referral to care. Subjects with mTBI (Glasgow Coma Scale 13–15) and negative ED initial head CT < 24 h of injury, completing 3- or 6-month functional outcome (Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended; GOSE), were extracted from the prospective, multicenter Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury (TRACK-TBI) Pilot study. Outcomes were dichotomized to full recovery (GOSE = 8) vs functional deficits (GOSE < 8). Univariate predictors with p < 0.10 were considered for multivariable regression. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) were reported for outcome predictors. Significance was assessed at p < 0.05. Subjects who completed GOSE at 3- and 6-month were 211 (GOSE < 8: 60%) and 185 (GOSE < 8: 65%). Risk factors for 6-month GOSE < 8 included less education (AOR = 0.85 per-year increase, 95% CI: (0.74–0.98)), prior psychiatric history (AOR = 3.75 (1.73–8.12)), Asian/minority race (American Indian/Alaskan/Hawaiian/Pacific Islander) (AOR = 23.99 (2.93–196.84)), and Hispanic ethnicity (AOR = 3.48 (1.29–9.37)). Risk factors for 3-month GOSE < 8 were similar with the addition of injury by assault predicting poorer outcome (AOR = 3.53 (1.17–10.63)). In mTBI patients seen in urban trauma center EDs with negative CT, education, injury by assault, Asian/minority race, and prior psychiatric history emerged as risk factors for prolonged disability

    A Privacy-Friendly Loyalty System Based on Discrete Logarithms over Elliptic Curves

    Abstract. Systems for the support of customer relationship management are be-coming increasingly attractive for vendors. Loyalty systems provide an interest-ing possibility for vendors in customer relationship management. This holds for both real world and online vendors. However, beside some potential benefits of a loyalty system, customers may also fear an invasion into their privacy, and may thus refuse to participate in such programs. In this paper, we present a privacy-friendly loyalty system to be used by online vendors to issue loyalty points. The system prevents vendors from exploiting data for the creation of customer profiles by providing unconditional unlinkability of loyalty points with regard to purchases. In the proposed system, we apply the difficulty for the computa-tion of discrete logarithms in a group of prime order to construct a secure and privacy-friendly counter. More precisely, all computations are carried out over special cryptographic groups based on elliptic curves where the decisional Diffie-Hellman problems can be solved easily while the computational Diffie-Hellman is believed to be hard.

    Patterns of ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) colonization in mountain grasslands: the importance of management practices

    International audienceWoody colonization of grasslands is often associated with changes in abiotic or biotic conditions or a combination of both. Widely used as fodder and litter in the past traditional agro-pastoral system, ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) has now become a colonizing species of mountain grasslands in the French Pyrenees. Its present distribution is dependent on past human activities and it is locally controlled by propagule pressure and abiotic conditions. However, even when all favourable conditions are met, all the potentially colonizable grasslands are not invaded. We hypothesize that management practices should play a crucial role in the control of ash colonization. From empirical field surveys we have compared the botanical composition of a set of grasslands (present and former) differing in management practices and level of ash colonization. We have displayed a kind of successional gradient positively linked to both ash cover and height but not to the age of trees. We have tested the relationships between ash presence in grassland and management types i.e. cutting and/or grazing, management intensity and some grassland communities' features i.e. total and local specific richness and species heterogeneity. Mixed use (cutting and grazing) is negatively linked to ash presence in grassland whereas grazing alone positively. Mixed use and high grazing intensity are directly preventing ash seedlings establishment, when low grazing intensity is allowing ash seedlings establishment indirectly through herbaceous vegetation neglected by livestock. Our results show the existence of a limit between grasslands with and without established ashes corresponding to a threshold in the intensity of use. Under this threshold, when ash is established, the colonization process seems to become irreversible. Ash possesses the ability of compensatory growth and therefore under a high grazing intensity develops a subterranean vegetative reproduction. However the question remains at which stage of seedling development and grazing intensity these strategies could occur

    Cardiometabolic Pregnancy Complications in Association With Autism-Related Traits as Measured by the Social Responsiveness Scale in ECHO

    Prior work has examined associations between cardiometabolic pregnancy complications and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but not how these complications may relate to social communication traits more broadly. We addressed this question within the Environmental Inf luences on Child Health Outcomes program, with 6,778 participants from 40 cohorts conducted from 1998–2021 with information on ASD-related traits via the Social Responsiveness Scale. Four metabolic pregnancy complications were examined individually, and combined, in association with Social Responsiveness Scale scores, using crude and adjusted linear regression as well as quantile regression analyses. We also examined associations stratified by ASD diagnosis, and potential mediation by preterm birth and low birth weight, and modification by child sex and enriched risk of ASD. Increases in ASD-related traits were associated with obesity (β = 4.64, 95% confidence interval: 3.27, 6.01) and gestational diabetes (β = 5.21, 95% confidence interval: 2.41, 8.02), specifically, but not with hypertension or preeclampsia. Results among children without ASD were similar to main analyses, but weaker among ASD cases. There was not strong evidence for mediation or modification. Results suggest that common cardiometabolic pregnancy complications may inf luence child ASD-related traits, not only above a diagnostic threshold relevant to ASD but also across the population
