The Diagnostic Potential of Transition Region Lines under-going Transient Ionization in Dynamic Events
We discuss the diagnostic potential of high cadence ultraviolet spectral data
when transient ionization is considered. For this we use high cadence UV
spectra taken during the impulsive phase of a solar flares (observed with
instruments on-board the Solar Maximum Mission) which showed excellent
correspondence with hard X-ray pulses. The ionization fraction of the
transition region ion O V and in particular the contribution function for the O
V 1371A line are computed within the Atomic Data and Analysis Structure, which
is a collection of fundamental and derived atomic data and codes which
manipulate them. Due to transient ionization, the O V 1371A line is enhanced in
the first fraction of a second with the peak in the line contribution function
occurring initially at a higher electron temperature than in ionization
equilibrium. The rise time and enhancement factor depend mostly on the electron
density. The fractional increase in the O V 1371A emissivity due to transient
ionization can reach a factor of 2--4 and can explain the fast response in the
line flux of transition regions ions during the impulsive phase of flares
solely as a result of transient ionization. This technique can be used to
diagnostic the electron temperature and density of solar flares observed with
the forth-coming Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
Belief Revision in Structured Probabilistic Argumentation
In real-world applications, knowledge bases consisting of all the information
at hand for a specific domain, along with the current state of affairs, are
bound to contain contradictory data coming from different sources, as well as
data with varying degrees of uncertainty attached. Likewise, an important
aspect of the effort associated with maintaining knowledge bases is deciding
what information is no longer useful; pieces of information (such as
intelligence reports) may be outdated, may come from sources that have recently
been discovered to be of low quality, or abundant evidence may be available
that contradicts them. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic structured
argumentation framework that arises from the extension of Presumptive
Defeasible Logic Programming (PreDeLP) with probabilistic models, and argue
that this formalism is capable of addressing the basic issues of handling
contradictory and uncertain data. Then, to address the last issue, we focus on
the study of non-prioritized belief revision operations over probabilistic
PreDeLP programs. We propose a set of rationality postulates -- based on
well-known ones developed for classical knowledge bases -- that characterize
how such operations should behave, and study a class of operators along with
theoretical relationships with the proposed postulates, including a
representation theorem stating the equivalence between this class and the class
of operators characterized by the postulates
Optical Fibre Based Real-Time Measurements During an LDR Prostate Brachytherapy Implant Simulation: Using a 3D printed anthropomorphic phantom
An optical fbre sensor based on radioluminescence, using the scintillation material terbium doped gadolinium oxysulphide (Gd2O2S:Tb) is evaluated, using a 3D printed anthropomorphic phantom for applications in low dose-rate (LDR) prostate brachytherapy. The scintillation material is embedded in a 700 µm diameter cavity within a 1 mm plastic optical fbre that is fxed within a brachytherapy needle. The high spatial resolution dosimeter is used to measure the dose contribution from Iodine-125 (I-125) seeds. Initially, the efects of sterilisation on the sensors (1) repeatability, (2) response as a function of angle, and (3) response as a function of distance, are evaluated in a custom polymethyl methacrylate phantom. Results obtained in this study demonstrate that the output response of the sensor, pre- and post-sterilisation are within the acceptable measurement uncertainty ranging from a maximum standard deviation of 4.7% pre and 5.5% post respectively, indicating that the low temperature sterilisation process does not damage the sensor or reduce performance. Subsequently, an LDR brachytherapy plan reconstructed using the VariSeed treatment planning system, in an anthropomorphic 3D printed training phantom, was used to assess the suitability of the sensor for applications in LDR brachytherapy. This phantom was printed based on patient anatomy, with the volume and dimensions of the prostate designed to represent that of the patient. I-125 brachytherapy seeds, with an average activity of 0.410 mCi, were implanted into the prostate phantom under transrectal ultrasound guidance; following the same techniques as employed in clinical practice by an experienced radiation oncologist. This work has demonstrated that this sensor is capable of accurately identifying when radioactive I-125 sources are introduced into the prostate via a brachytherapy needle
Baboon-to-human liver transplantation
Our ability to control both the cellular and humoral components of xenograft rejection in laboratory experiments, together with an organ shortage that has placed limits on clinical transplantation services, prompted us to undertake a liver transplantation from a baboon to a 35-year-old man with B virus-associated chronic active hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus infection. Liver replacement was performed according to conventional surgical techniques. Immunosuppression was with the FK 506-prednisone-prostaglandin regimen used routinely for hepatic allotransplantation, to which a daily non-myelotoxic dose of cyclophosphamide was added. During 70 days of survival, there was little evidence of hepatic rejection by biochemical monitoring or histopathological examination. Products of hepatic synthesis, including clotting factors, became those of the baboon liver with no obvious adverse effects. Death followed a cerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage that was caused by an angioinvasive aspergillus infection. However, the underlying cause of death was widespread biliary sludge that formed in the biliary tree despite a seemingly satisfactory choledochojejunostomy. During life and in necropsy samples, there was evidence of the chimerism that we believe is integral to the acceptance of both xenografts and allografts. Our experience has shown the feasibility of controlling the rejection of the baboon liver xenograft in a human recipient. The biliary stasis that was the beginning of lethal infectious complications may be correctable by modifications of surgical technique. In further trials, the error of over-immunosuppression should be avoidable. © 1993
Suitability of aircraft wastewater for pathogen detection and public health surveillance
International air travel is now widely recognised as one of the primary mechanisms responsible for the transnational movement and global spread of SARS-CoV-2. Monitoring the viral load and novel lineages within human-derived wastewater collected from aircraft and at air transport hubs has been proposed as an effective way to monitor the importation frequency of viral pathogens. The success of this approach, however, is highly dependent on the bathroom and defecation habits of air passengers during their journey. In this study of UK adults (n = 2103), we quantified the likelihood of defecation prior to departure, on the aircraft and upon arrival on both short- and long-haul flights. The results were then used to assess the likelihood of capturing the signal from infected individuals at UK travel hubs. To obtain a representative cross-section of the population, the survey was stratified by geographical region, gender, age, parenting status, and social class. We found that an individual's likelihood to defecate on short-haul flights ( 6 h in duration). This behaviour pattern was higher among males and younger age groups. The maximum likelihood of defecation was prior to departure (< 39 %). Based on known SARS-CoV-2 faecal shedding rates (30–60 %) and an equal probability of infected individuals being on short- (71 % of inbound flights) and long-haul flights (29 %), we estimate that aircraft wastewater is likely to capture ca. 8–14 % of SARS-CoV-2 cases entering the UK. Monte Carlo simulations predicted that SARS-CoV-2 would be present in wastewater on 14 % of short-haul flights and 62 % of long-haul flights under current pandemic conditions. We conclude that aircraft wastewater alone is insufficient to effectively monitor all the transboundary entries of faecal-borne pathogens but can form part of a wider strategy for public heath surveillance at national borders
Computational Modeling of Single-Cell Migration::The Leading Role of Extracellular Matrix Fibers
Cell migration is vitally important in a wide variety of biological contexts ranging from embryonic development and wound healing to malignant diseases such as cancer. It is a very complex process that is controlled by intracellular signaling pathways as well as the cell's microenvironment. Due to its importance and complexity, it has been studied for many years in the biomedical sciences, and in the last 30 years it also received an increasing amount of interest from theoretical scientists and mathematical modelers. Here we propose a force-based, individual-based modeling framework that links single-cell migration with matrix fibers and cell-matrix interactions through contact guidance and matrix remodelling. With this approach, we can highlight the effect of the cell's environment on its migration. We investigate the influence of matrix stiffness, matrix architecture, and cell speed on migration using quantitative measures that allow us to compare the results to experiments

Superfluid pairing in a polarized dipolar Fermi gas
We calculate the critical temperature of a superfluid phase transition in a
polarized Fermi gas of dipolar particles. In this case the order parameter is
anisotropic and has a nontrivial energy dependence. Cooper pairs do not have a
definite value of the angular momentum and are coherent superpositions of all
odd angular momenta. Our results describe prospects for achieving the
superfluid transition in single-component gases of fermionic polar molecules.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Theoretical study of the absorption spectra of the sodium dimer
Absorption of radiation from the sodium dimer molecular states correlating to
Na(3s)-Na(3s) is investigated theoretically. Vibrational bound and continuum
transitions from the singlet X Sigma-g+ state to the first excited singlet A
Sigma-u+ and singlet B Pi-u states and from the triplet a Sigma-u+ state to the
first excited triplet b Sigma-g+ and triplet c Pi-g states are studied
quantum-mechanically. Theoretical and experimental data are used to
characterize the molecular properties taking advantage of knowledge recently
obtained from ab initio calculations, spectroscopy, and ultra-cold atom
collision studies. The quantum-mechanical calculations are carried out for
temperatures in the range from 500 to 3000 K and are compared with previous
calculations and measurements where available.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, revtex, eps
