COLOR III: a multicentre randomised clinical trial comparing transanal TME versus laparoscopic TME for mid and low rectal cancer
Total mesorectal excision (TME) is an essential component of surgical management of rectal cancer. Both open and laparoscopic TME have been proven to be oncologically safe. However, it remains a challenge to achieve complete TME with clear circumferential resections margin (CRM) with the conventional transabdominal approach, particularly in mid and low rectal tumours. Transanal TME (TaTME) was developed to improve oncological and functional outcomes of patients with mid and low rectal cancer. An international, multicentre, superiority, randomised trial was designed to compare TaTME and conventional laparoscopic TME as the surgical treatment of mid and low rectal carcinomas. The primary endpoint is involved CRM. Secondary endpoints include completeness of mesorectum, residual mesorectum, morbidity and mortality, local recurrence, disease-free and overall survival, percentage of sphincter-saving procedures, functional outcome and quality of life. A Quality Assurance Protocol including centralised MRI review, histopathology re-evaluation, standardisation of surgical techniques, and monitoring and assessment of surgical quality will be conducted. The difference in involvement of CRM between the two treatment strategies is thought to be in favour of the TaTME. TaTME is therefore expected to be superior to laparoscopic TME in terms of oncological outcomes in case of mid and low rectal carcinomas
Evolving localizations in reaction-diffusion cellular automata
We consider hexagonal cellular automata with immediate cell neighbourhood and
three cell-states. Every cell calculates its next state depending on the
integral representation of states in its neighbourhood, i.e. how many
neighbours are in each one state. We employ evolutionary algorithms to breed
local transition functions that support mobile localizations (gliders), and
characterize sets of the functions selected in terms of quasi-chemical systems.
Analysis of the set of functions evolved allows to speculate that mobile
localizations are likely to emerge in the quasi-chemical systems with limited
diffusion of one reagent, a small number of molecules is required for
amplification of travelling localizations, and reactions leading to stationary
localizations involve relatively equal amount of quasi-chemical species.
Techniques developed can be applied in cascading signals in nature-inspired
spatially extended computing devices, and phenomenological studies and
classification of non-linear discrete systems.Comment: Accepted for publication in Int. J. Modern Physics
Helicobacter pylori: comparative genomics and structure-function analysis of the flagellum biogenesis protein HP0958
Helicobacter pylori is a gastric pathogen which infects ~50% of the global population and can lead to the development of gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers and carcinoma. Genome sequencing of H. pylori revealed high levels of genetic variability; this pathogen is known for its adaptability due to mechanisms including phase variation, recombination and horizontal gene transfer. Motility is essential for efficient colonisation by H. pylori. The flagellum is a complex nanomachine which has been studied in detail in E. coli and Salmonella. In H. pylori, key differences have been identified in the regulation of flagellum biogenesis, warranting further investigation. In this study, the genomes of two H. pylori strains (CCUG 17874 and P79) were sequenced and published as draft genome sequences. Comparative studies identified the potential role of restriction modification systems and the comB locus in transformation efficiency differences between these strains. Core genome analysis of 43 H. pylori strains including 17874 and P79 defined a more refined core genome for the species than previously published. Comparative analysis of the genome sequences of strains isolated from individuals suffering from H. pylori related diseases resulted in the identification of “disease-specific” genes. Structure-function analysis of the essential motility protein HP0958 was performed to elucidate its role during flagellum assembly in H. pylori. The previously reported HP0958-FliH interaction could not be substantiated in this study and appears to be a false positive. Site-directed mutagenesis confirmed that the coiled-coil domain of HP0958 is involved in the interaction with RpoN (74-284), while the Zn-finger domain is required for direct interaction with the full length flaA mRNA transcript. Complementation of a non-motile hp0958-null derivative strain of P79 with site-directed mutant alleles of hp0958 resulted in cells producing flagellar-type extrusions from non-polar positions. Thus, HP0958 may have a novel function in spatial localisation of flagella in H. pylor
On polymorphic logical gates in sub-excitable chemical medium
In a sub-excitable light-sensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical medium an
asymmetric disturbance causes the formation of localized traveling
wave-fragments. Under the right conditions these wave-fragment can conserve
their shape and velocity vectors for extended time periods. The size and life
span of a fragment depend on the illumination level of the medium. When two or
more wave-fragments collide they annihilate or merge into a new wave-fragment.
In computer simulations based on the Oregonator model we demonstrate that the
outcomes of inter-fragment collisions can be controlled by varying the
illumination level applied to the medium. We interpret these wave-fragments as
values of Boolean variables and design collision-based polymorphic logical
gates. The gate implements operation XNOR for low illumination, and it acts as
NOR gate for high illumination. As a NOR gate is a universal gate then we are
able to demonstrate that a simulated light sensitive BZ medium exhibits
computational universality
Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction in liquid marbles
In Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) type reactions, chemical oxidation waves can be exploited to produce reaction-diffusion processors. This paper reports on a new method of encapsulating BZ solution in a powder coating of either polyethylene (PE) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), to produce BZ liquid marbles (LMs). BZ LMs have solid-liquid interfaces compared to previously reported encapsulation systems, BZ emulsions and BZ vesicles. Oscillation studies on individual LMs established PE-coated LMs were easier to prepare and more robust than PTFE-coated LMs. Therefore, this coating was used to study BZ LMs positioned in ordered and disordered arrays. Sporadic transfer of excitation waves was observed between LMs in close proximity to each other. These results lay the foundations for future studies on information transmission and processing arrays of BZ LMs. Future work aims to elucidate the effect of other physical stimuli on the dynamics of chemical excitation waves withinthese systems
Accurate masses and radii of normal stars: modern results and applications
This paper presents and discusses a critical compilation of accurate,
fundamental determinations of stellar masses and radii. We have identified 95
detached binary systems containing 190 stars (94 eclipsing systems, and alpha
Centauri) that satisfy our criterion that the mass and radius of both stars be
known to 3% or better. To these we add interstellar reddening, effective
temperature, metal abundance, rotational velocity and apsidal motion
determinations when available, and we compute a number of other physical
parameters, notably luminosity and distance. We discuss the use of this
information for testing models of stellar evolution. The amount and quality of
the data also allow us to analyse the tidal evolution of the systems in
considerable depth, testing prescriptions of rotational synchronisation and
orbital circularisation in greater detail than possible before. The new data
also enable us to derive empirical calibrations of M and R for single (post-)
main-sequence stars above 0.6 M(Sun). Simple, polynomial functions of T(eff),
log g and [Fe/H] yield M and R with errors of 6% and 3%, respectively.
Excellent agreement is found with independent determinations for host stars of
transiting extrasolar planets, and good agreement with determinations of M and
R from stellar models as constrained by trigonometric parallaxes and
spectroscopic values of T(eff) and [Fe/H]. Finally, we list a set of 23
interferometric binaries with masses known to better than 3%, but without
fundamental radius determinations (except alpha Aur). We discuss the prospects
for improving these and other stellar parameters in the near future.Comment: 56 pages including figures and tables. To appear in The Astronomy and

Quasars and their host galaxies
This review attempts to describe developments in the fields of quasar and
quasar host galaxies in the past five. In this time period, the Sloan and 2dF
quasar surveys have added several tens of thousands of quasars, with Sloan
quasars being found to z>6. Obscured, or partially obscured quasars have begun
to be found in significant numbers. Black hole mass estimates for quasars, and
our confidence in them, have improved significantly, allowing a start on
relating quasar properties such as radio jet power to fundamental parameters of
the quasar such as black hole mass and accretion rate. Quasar host galaxy
studies have allowed us to find and characterize the host galaxies of quasars
to z>2. Despite these developments, many questions remain unresolved, in
particular the origin of the close relationship between black hole mass and
galaxy bulge mass/velocity dispersion seen in local galaxies.Comment: Review article, to appear in Astrophysics Update
A Sample of Ultra Steep Spectrum Sources Selected from the Westerbork In the Southern Hemisphere (WISH) survey
The 352 MHz Westerbork In the Southern Hemisphere (WISH) survey is the
southern extension of the WENSS, covering 1.60 sr between -9 < DEC < -26 to a
limiting flux density of ~18 mJy (5sigma). Due to the very low elevation of the
observations, the survey has a much lower resolution in declination than in
right ascension (54" x 54"cosec(DEC)). A correlation with the 1.4 GHz NVSS
shows that the positional accuracy is less constrained in declination than in
right ascension, but there is no significant systematic error. We present a
source list containing 73570 sources.
We correlate this WISH catalogue with the NVSS to construct a sample of faint
Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS) sources, which is accessible for follow-up studies
with large optical telescopes in the southern hemisphere. This sample is aimed
at increasing the number of known high redshift radio galaxies to allow
detailed follow-up studies of these massive galaxies and their environments in
the early Universe.Comment: 12 Pages, including 5 PostScript figures. Accepted for publication in
