    Electromechanical wavelength tuning of double-membrane photonic crystal cavities

    We present a method for tuning the resonant wavelength of photonic crystal cavities (PCCs) around 1.55 um. Large tuning of the PCC mode is enabled by electromechanically controlling the separation between two parallel InGaAsP membranes. A fabrication method to avoid sticking between the membranes is discussed. Reversible red/blue shifting of the symmetric/anti-symmetric modes has been observed, which provides clear evidence of the electromechanical tuning, and a maximum shift of 10 nm with < 6 V applied bias has been obtained.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Size dependent exciton g-factor in self-assembled InAs/InP quantum dots

    We have studied the size dependence of the exciton g-factor in self-assembled InAs/InP quantum dots. Photoluminescence measurements on a large ensemble of these dots indicate a multimodal height distribution. Cross-sectional Scanning Tunneling Microscopy measurements have been performed and support the interpretation of the macro photoluminescence spectra. More than 160 individual quantum dots have systematically been investigated by analyzing single dot magneto-luminescence between 1200nm and 1600 nm. We demonstrate a strong dependence of the exciton g-factor on the height and diameter of the quantum dots, which eventually gives rise to a sign change of the g-factor. The observed correlation between exciton g-factor and the size of the dots is in good agreement with calculations. Moreover, we find a size dependent anisotropy splitting of the exciton emission in zero magnetic field.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure

    Storing, linking, and mining microarray databases using SRS

    BACKGROUND: SRS (Sequence Retrieval System) has proven to be a valuable platform for storing, linking, and querying biological databases. Due to the availability of a broad range of different scientific databases in SRS, it has become a useful platform to incorporate and mine microarray data to facilitate the analyses of biological questions and non-hypothesis driven quests. Here we report various solutions and tools for integrating and mining annotated expression data in SRS. RESULTS: We devised an Auto-Upload Tool by which microarray data can be automatically imported into SRS. The dataset can be linked to other databases and user access can be set. The linkage comprehensiveness of microarray platforms to other platforms and biological databases was examined in a network of scientific databases. The stored microarray data can also be made accessible to external programs for further processing. For example, we built an interface to a program called Venn Mapper, which collects its microarray data from SRS, processes the data by creating Venn diagrams, and saves the data for interpretation. CONCLUSION: SRS is a useful database system to store, link and query various scientific datasets, including microarray data. The user-friendly Auto-Upload Tool makes SRS accessible to biologists for linking and mining user-owned databases

    Wavelength tuning of single and vertically stacked InAs quantum dot [QD] layers embedded inInGaAsP/InP [100] grown by metal organic vapor-phase epitaxy is achieved by controlling theAs/P surface exchange reaction during InAs deposition. The As/P exchange reaction is suppressedfor decreased QD growth temperature and group V-III flow ratio, reducing the QD size andphotoluminescence [PL]emission wavelength. The As/P exchange reaction and QD PL wavelengthare then reproducibly controlled by the thickness of an ultrathin [0Âż2 ML] GaAs interlayerunderneath the QDs. Submonolayer GaAs coverages result in a shape transition from QDs toquantum dashes at low group V-III flow ratio. Temperature dependent PL measurements revealexcellent optical properties of the QDs up to room temperature with PL peak wavelengths in thetechnologically important 1.55 Âżregion for telecom applications. Widely stacked QD layers arereproduced with identical PL emission to increase the active volume, while closely stacked QDlayers reveal a systematic PL redshift and linewidth reduction due to vertical electronic couplingwhich is proven by the linear polarization of the cleaved-side PL changing from in plane toisotropic.     Epigenome-wide association study reveals decreased average methylation levels years before breast cancer diagnosis

    Interest in the potential of DNA methylation in peripheral blood as a biomarker of cancer risk is increasing. We aimed to assess whether epigenome-wide DNA methylation measured in peripheral blood samples obtained before onset of the disease is associated with increased risk of breast cancer. We report on three independent prospective nested case-control studies from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-Italy; n = 162 matched case-control pairs), the Norwegian Women and Cancer study (NOWAC; n = 168 matched pairs), and the Breakthrough Generations Study (BGS; n = 548 matched pairs). We used the Illumina 450k array to measure methylation in the EPIC and NOWAC cohorts. Whole-genome bisulphite sequencing (WGBS) was performed on the BGS cohort using pooled DNA samples, combined to reach 50× coverage across ~16 million CpG sites in the genome including 450k array CpG sites.     Quantized Majorana conductance

    Majorana zero-modes hold great promise for topological quantum computing. Tunnelling spectroscopy in electrical transport is the primary tool to identify the presence of Majorana zero-modes, for instance as a zero-bias peak (ZBP) in differential-conductance. The Majorana ZBP-height is predicted to be quantized at the universal conductance value of 2e2/h at zero temperature. Interestingly, this quantization is a direct consequence of the famous Majorana symmetry, 'particle equals antiparticle'. The Majorana symmetry protects the quantization against disorder, interactions, and variations in the tunnel coupling. Previous experiments, however, have shown ZBPs much smaller than 2e2/h, with a recent observation of a peak-height close to 2e2/h. Here, we report a quantized conductance plateau at 2e2/h in the zero-bias conductance measured in InSb semiconductor nanowires covered with an Al superconducting shell. Our ZBP-height remains constant despite changing parameters such as the magnetic field and tunnel coupling, i.e. a quantized conductance plateau. We distinguish this quantized Majorana peak from possible non-Majorana origins, by investigating its robustness on electric and magnetic fields as well as its temperature dependence. The observation of a quantized conductance plateau strongly supports the existence of non-Abelian Majorana zero-modes in the system, consequently paving the way for future braiding experiments.Comment: 5 figure

    Design of InP membrane SOA with butt-joint active passive interface

    A butt-joint SOA design for InP on Si membrane (IMOS) platform is proposed. The new design features the butt-joint interface between the SOA and passive nanophotonic waveguide, which makes the interface a factor of 2 to 6 shorter than in the current twin-guide SOAs, with possibility to reduce it further to factor of 5-10. This makes the new SOA a promising candidate for high-speed directly modulated lasers (DML) applications, where extremely short SOAs (40-100 ÎĽm long) and short distances between reflectors are usually required
