Abstract Composite materials are nowadays massively utilized in a very large number of industrial applications. Thus, it has become essential to characterize the service behaviour they can provide depending on their working conditions. In this paper, the study of the influence of impact conditions on damage generation in high performance composite materials, consisting of non-crimp fabric composite laminates, is carried out through the application of an advanced ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation technique, known as full volume ultrasonic scanning. This technique is based on the pulse-echo immersion testing method and allows for the quantitative analysis of the internal material structure in the entire composite volume. The aim of the ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation analysis is the metrological characterization of the non-crimp fabric composite laminates in terms of actual thickness estimation and stacking sequence fiber orientation verification as well as their quality assessment in terms of impact damage development within the whole composite material volume

    Optimizing 3d printed metallic object’s postprocessing : a case of gamma‐tial alloys

    Get PDF
Gamma‐TiAl (γ‐TiAl) alloys can be used in high‐end products relevant to the aerospace, defense, biomedical, and marine industries. Fabricating objects made of γ‐TiAl alloys needs an additive manufacturing process called Electron Beam Melting (EBM) or other similar processes because these alloys are difficult‐to‐cut materials. An object fabricated by EBM exhibits poor surface finish and must undergo postprocessing. In this study, cylindrical specimens were fabricated by EBM and post‐processed by turning at different cutting conditions (cutting speed, depth of cut, feed rate, insert radius, and coolant flowrate). The EBM conditions were as follows: average powder size 110 ÎŒm, acceleration voltage 60 kV, beam current 10 mA, beam scanning speed 2200 mm/s, and beam focus offset 0.20 mm. The surface roughness and cutting force were recorded for each set of cutting conditions. The values of the cutting conditions were set by the L36 Design of Experiment approach. The effects of the cutting conditions on surface roughness and cutting force are elucidated by constructing the possibility distributions (triangular fuzzy numbers) from the experimental data. Finally, the optimal cutting conditions to improve the surface finish of specimens made of γ‐TiAl alloys are determined using the possibility distributions. Thus, this study’s outcomes can be used to develop intelligent systems for optimizing additive manufacturing processes. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of the module based on Problem Based Research (PBR) on electrolyte and non-electrolyte solution material. This research is a descriptive qualitative research to assess and obtain chemical modules on electrolyte solution and non-electrolyte material based on Problem Based Research (PBR). Module development in this study follows the three stages of the ADDIE model, namely, the analysis stage (Analyze), the design stage (Design), and the development stage (Development). Data obtained using questionnaires. The results of the expert lecturer validation showed that the module is valid with a percentage of 81.5%. The results of the expert validity test showed a validity percentage of 92.5%. Furthermore, the group trial was limited to 10 students, the responses were obtained that the aspects of language, readability, and appearance of the module were very good. These results indicate that the Problem Based Research (PBR) -based module on electrolyte and non-electrolyte solution material is developed valid to be continued at the implementation stage, and evaluation

Transduction of the arginine-vasopressin signal in skeletal myogenic cells

    Get PDF
Arginine vasopressin (AVP) induced concentration-dependent (10(-9) to 10(-6) M) stimulation of inositol phosphate production and a biphasic increment of cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) in skeletal myogenic cells in culture. These effects were almost completely abolished when the cells were pretreated with the AVP antagonist [deamino-Pen1,Val4,D-Arg8]-vasopressin before stimulation with AVP, thus confirming a V1 receptor-mediated effect. Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate production was maximally stimulated within 2-3 s of treatment with AVP, immediately followed by release of Ca2+ from intracellular deposits. Both effects were inhibited by treatment with 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol 13-acetate (TPA). Such effect of TPA was reversed by the protein kinase C inhibitor staurosporine. Vasopressin also regulated the intracellular pH of responsive cells with mechanisms involving both Na+ and anion transport across the plasma membrane. However, unlike in other cell types, AVP stimulated the Na(+)-H+ antiport only simultaneously with a dramatic cell acidification or after treatment with TPA. Response to AVP was observed in L6 and L5 and, to a lesser extent, in chick embryo myogenic cells, regardless of the stage of differentiation (myoblast or myotube). Comparison of different subclones of the L6 cell line demonstrated that the responsiveness to AVP correlated positively with their myogenic potential

Control of cytosolic free calcium in rat and chicken osteoclasts. The role of extracellular calcium and calcitonin.

Single cell [Ca2+], studies were performed in chicken and rat osteoclasts loaded with fura-2 and exposed to a variety of treatments. Under resting conditions, basal [Ca2+]i, was 79.2 +/- 47.3 and 84.3 +/- 65.7 nM (averages +/- S.D.; n = 141 and 126) in the osteoclasts of the two species, respectively. Basal [Ca2+]i was stable in all rat and in approximately 80% of chicken osteoclasts. In the remaining 20%, spontaneous, irregular [Ca2+], fluctuations were observed (amplitude range: 50-200 nm over basal values). Increase of [Ca2+]o over the concentration of the Krebs-Ringer incubation medium (2 mM) induced rises of [Ca2+] in almost all cells investigated. [Ca2+] rises were already appreciable with 0.5 mM [Ca2+]o additions and reached high values with 4 mM additions: 390 +/- 113 and 364 +/- 214 nM [Ca2+], in rat and chicken osteoclasts, respectively (n = 122 and 101). Qualitatively, the responses to [Ca2+]o additions consisted of discrete [Ca2+]i transients, biphasic (an initial spike followed by a plateau), or monophasic (either the spike or the plateau). In a few chicken osteoclasts, the [Ca2+]i increase occurring after [Ca2+]o addition consisted of multiple, irregular fluctuations, similar to those observed in 20% of these cells under resting conditions. In individual osteoclasts subsequently exposed to multiple [Ca2+]o increase pulses, the type of the [Ca2+]i transient (mono- or biphasic) was maintained, and the size was dependent on the magnitude of the [Ca2+]o additions. Effects similar to those of [Ca2+]o were induced by the addition of Cd2+ or Ba2+ (but not La3+ or Mg2+) into the medium. The Cd2+ effect was maintained in part even in a Ca2+-free medium. Of various hormones and factors, parathormone, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, and prostaglandin E2 were inactive. In contrast, calcitonin was active in rat osteoclasts (which express numerous receptors). [Ca2+]i increases were small (19 +/- 17.9 nM; n = 21) when the hormone was administered alone; they were synergistic (severalfold potentiation) when the hormone was administered before or after [Ca2+]o. The [Ca2+]i effects of calcitonin were mimicked by 8Br-cAMP (31 +/- 26 nM; n = 12) when the nucleotide was administered alone; marked synergism when it was administered in combination with [Ca2+]o. This paper demonstrates for the first time that changes of [Ca2+]i are induced in osteoclasts by treatments with [Ca2+]o and calcitonin and can therefore be involved in intracellular mediation of the physiological effects of these two extracellular signals

Study on thrust force and torque sensor signals in drilling of Al/CFRP stacks for aeronautical applications

    Get PDF
Abstract Multi-material stack products made of carbon fibre reinforce polymers (CFRP) and light-weight metal alloys, such as aluminium alloys, are becoming increasingly employed for aerospace applications. When composite laminates are stacked with metal alloy sheets, the drilling process becomes more complex due to the diverse properties of the stacked materials which involve different wear mechanisms and different drilling parameters. In this framework, the aim of this paper is to investigate the drilling process of Al/CFRP stacks for aeronautical applications through an experimental testing campaign under different drilling conditions. In order to study the thrust force and torque generated during the drilling process, a multiple sensor system is employed for data acquisition, and an advanced methodology for sensor signal processing in the time and frequency domain is developed
