The Narrow Line Region of Ark 564
The continuum and emission-line spectrum of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy
Ark 564 is used to investigate, for the first time, the physical conditions and
structure of its narrow line region (NLR). For this purpose, composite models,
accounting for the coupled effect of photoionization and shocks, are employed.
The emission-line spectrum of Ark 564, which ranges from the ultraviolet to the
near-infrared, shows a rich forbidden line spectrum. Strong emphasis is given
to the study of the coronal line region. The diversity of physical conditions
deduced from the observations requires multi-cloud models to reproduce the
observed lines and continuum. We find that a combination of high velocity (Vs =
1500 km/s) shock-dominated clouds as well as low velocity (Vs = 150 km/s)
radiation-dominated clouds explains the coronal lines, while the optical
low-ionization lines are mainly explained by shock-dominated clouds. The
results for Ark 564 are compared with those obtained for other Seyfert galaxies
previously analyzed such as NGC 5252, Circinus, NGC 4051 and NGC 4151. The
model results for the ultraviolet and optical permitted lines suggest that the
broad line region may contribute up to 80%, depending on the emission-line,
being of about 30% for Hbeta. The consistency of the multi-cloud model is
checked by comparing the predicted and observed continuum, from radio to X-ray,
and indicate that the dust-to-gas ratio in the clouds varies from 10^{-15} to
10^{-12}.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure. Accepted in A&

Ultrasonic-assisted extraction and natural deep eutectic solvents combination: A green strategy to improve the recovery of phenolic compounds from Lavandula Pedunculata subsp. Lusitanica (Chaytor) Franco
The present study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of different natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) on the extraction of phenolic compounds from Lavandula pedunculata subsp.
lusitanica (Chaytor) Franco, on the antioxidant activity, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and tyrosinase (Tyr) inhibitory capacities. Ten different NADES were used
in this research and compared with conventional solvents. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE)
for 60 min proved to be the best extraction condition, and proline:lactic acid (1:1) and choline
chloride:urea (1:2) extracts showed the highest total phenolic contents (56.00 ± 0.77 mgGAE/gdw)
and antioxidant activity [64.35 ± 1.74 mgTE/gdw and 72.13 ± 0.97 mgTE/gdw in 2.2-diphenyl-1-
picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2.20
-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) methods,
respectively]. These extracts also exhibited enzymes inhibitory capacity particularly against Tyr and
AChE. Even so, organic acid-based NADES showed to be the best extractants producing extracts
with considerable ability to inhibit enzymes. Twenty-four phenolic compounds were identified
by HPLC-HRMS, being rosmarinic acid, ferulic acid and salvianolic acid B the major compounds.
The results confirmed that the combination of UAE and NADES provide an excellent alternative to
organic solvents for sustainable and green extraction, and have huge potential for use in industrial
applications involving the extraction of bioactive compounds from plants.Grant SFRH/BD/145243/2019, UIDB/05183/2020info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Tsunamis Generated by Submerged Landslides: Numerical Analysis of the Near-Field Wave Characteristics
ABSTRACT: The accurate modeling of the landslide?generated tsunami characteristics in the so-called near-field is crucial for many practical applications. In this paper, we present a new full-3-D numerical method for modeling tsunamis generated by rigid and impermeable landslides in OpenFOAM® based on the overset mesh technique. The approach has been successfully validated through the numerical reproduction of past experiments for landslide?generated tsunamis triggered by a rigid and impermeable wedge at a sloping coast. The method has been applied to perform a detailed numerical study of the near-field wave features induced by submerged landslides. A parametric analysis has been carried out to explore the importance of the landslide's initial acceleration, directly related to the landslide-triggering mechanisms, on the tsunami generation process and on the related wave properties. Near-field analysis of the numerical results confirms that the influence of the initial acceleration on the tsunami wave properties is significant, affecting wave height, wave period, and wave celerity. Furthermore, it is found that the tsunami generation mechanism experiences a saturation effect for increasing landslide's initial acceleration, confirming and extending previous studies. Moreover, the resulting extended database, composed of previous experimental data and new numerical ones, spanning a wider range of governing parameters, has been represented in the form of a “nondimensional wavemaker curve,” and a new relationship for predicting the wave properties in the near-field as a function of the Hammack number is proposed
Kepler Observations of V447 Lyr: An Eclipsing U Gem Cataclysmic Variable
We present the results of an analysis of data covering 1.5 years of the dwarf
nova V447 Lyr. We detect eclipses of the accretion disk by the mass donating
secondary star every 3.74 hrs which is the binary orbital period. V447 Lyr is
therefore the first dwarf nova in the Kepler field to show eclipses. We also
detect five long outbursts and six short outbursts showing V447 Lyr is a U Gem
type dwarf nova. We show that the orbital phase of the mid-eclipse occurs
earlier during outbursts compared to quiescence and that the width of the
eclipse is greater during outburst. This suggests that the bright spot is more
prominent during quiescence and that the disk is larger during outburst than
quiescence. This is consistent with an expansion of the outer disk radius due
to the presence of high viscosity material associated with the outburst,
followed by a contraction in quiescence due to the accretion of low angular
momentum material. We note that the long outbursts appear to be triggered by a
short outburst, which is also observed in the super-outbursts of SU UMa dwarf
novae as observed using Kepler.Comment: Accepted by MNRA
Microplastics and anthropogenic debris in rainwater from Bahia Blanca, Argentina
Concern about atmospheric microplastic (MP) contamination has increased in recent years. This study assessed the abundance of airborne anthropogenic particles, including MPs, deposited in rainfall in Bahia Blanca, southwest Buenos Aires, Argentina. Rainwater samples were collected monthly from March to December 2021 using an active wet-only collector consisting of a glass funnel and a PVC pipe that is only open during rain events. Results obtained show that all rain samples contained anthropogenic debris. The term “anthropogenic debris” is used to refer to the total number of particles as not all the particles found could be determined as plastic. Among all the samples, an average deposition of 77 ± 29 items (anthropogenic debris) m⁻²d⁻¹ was found. The highest deposition was observed in November (148 items m⁻²d⁻¹) while the lowest was found in March (46 items m⁻²d⁻¹). Anthropogenic debris ranged in size from 0.1 mm to 3.87 mm with the most abundant particles being smaller than 1 mm (77.8%). The dominant form of particles found were fibers (95%), followed by fragments (3.1%). Blue color predominated (37.2%) in the total number of samples, followed by light blue (23.3%) and black (21.7%). Further, small particles (<2 mm), apparently composed of mineral material and plastic fibers, were recognized. The chemical composition of suspected MPs was examined by Raman microscopy. The analysis of μ-Raman spectra confirmed the presence of polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyethylene vinyl acetate fibers and provided evidence of fibers containing industrial additives such as indigo dye. This is the first assessment of MP pollution in rain in Argentina.Centro de Química Inorgánic
Caribbean Corals in Crisis: Record Thermal Stress, Bleaching, and Mortality in 2005
BACKGROUND The rising temperature of the world's oceans has become a major threat to coral reefs globally as the severity and frequency of mass coral bleaching and mortality events increase. In 2005, high ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean resulted in the most severe bleaching event ever recorded in the basin. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Satellite-based tools provided warnings for coral reef managers and scientists, guiding both the timing and location of researchers' field observations as anomalously warm conditions developed and spread across the greater Caribbean region from June to October 2005. Field surveys of bleaching and mortality exceeded prior efforts in detail and extent, and provided a new standard for documenting the effects of bleaching and for testing nowcast and forecast products. Collaborators from 22 countries undertook the most comprehensive documentation of basin-scale bleaching to date and found that over 80% of corals bleached and over 40% died at many sites. The most severe bleaching coincided with waters nearest a western Atlantic warm pool that was centered off the northern end of the Lesser Antilles. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE Thermal stress during the 2005 event exceeded any observed from the Caribbean in the prior 20 years, and regionally-averaged temperatures were the warmest in over 150 years. Comparison of satellite data against field surveys demonstrated a significant predictive relationship between accumulated heat stress (measured using NOAA Coral Reef Watch's Degree Heating Weeks) and bleaching intensity. This severe, widespread bleaching and mortality will undoubtedly have long-term consequences for reef ecosystems and suggests a troubled future for tropical marine ecosystems under a warming climate. This work was partially supported by salaries from the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program to the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program authors. NOAA provided funding to Caribbean ReefCheck investigators to undertake surveys of bleaching and mortality. Otherwise, no funding from outside authors' institutions was necessary for the undertaking of this study.
