Intensification of very wet monsoon seasons in India under global warming
Rainfall-intense summer monsoon seasons on the Indian subcontinent that are exceeding long-term averages cause widespread floods and landslides. Here we show that the latest generation of coupled climate models robustly project an intensification of very rainfall-intense seasons (JuneâSeptember). Under the shared socioeconomic pathway SSP5-8.5, very wet monsoon seasons as observed in only 5 years in the period 1965â2015 are projected to occur 8 times more often in 2050â2100 in the multi-model average. Under SSP2-4.5, these seasons become only a factor of 6 times more frequent, showing that even modest efforts to mitigate climate change can have a strong impact on the frequency of very strong rainfall seasons. Besides, we find that the increasing risk of extreme seasonal rainfall is accompanied by a shift from days with light rainfall to days with moderate or heavy rainfall. Additionally, the number of wet days is projected to increase. © 2022. The Authors
Robust increase of Indian monsoon rainfall and its variability under future warming in CMIP6 models
The Indian summer monsoon is an integral part of the global climate system. As its seasonal rainfall plays a crucial role in India's agriculture and shapes many other aspects of life, it affects the livelihood of a fifth of the world's population. It is therefore highly relevant to assess its change under potential future climate change. Global climate models within the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) indicated a consistent increase in monsoon rainfall and its variability under global warming. Since the range of the results of CMIP5 was still large and the confidence in the models was limited due to partly poor representation of observed rainfall, the updates within the latest generation of climate models in CMIP6 are of interest. Here, we analyze 32 models of the latest CMIP6 exercise with regard to their annual mean monsoon rainfall and its variability. All of these models show a substantial increase in June-to-September (JJAS) mean rainfall under unabated climate change (SSP5-8.5) and most do also for the other three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways analyzed (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0). Moreover, the simulation ensemble indicates a linear dependence of rainfall on global mean temperature with a high agreement between the models independent of the SSP if global warming is the dominant forcing of the monsoon dynamics as it is in the 21st century; the multi-model mean for JJAS projects an increase of 0.33âmmâdâ1 and 5.3â% per kelvin of global warming. This is significantly higher than in the CMIP5 projections. Most models project that the increase will contribute to the precipitation especially in the Himalaya region and to the northeast of the Bay of Bengal, as well as the west coast of India. Interannual variability is found to be increasing in the higher-warming scenarios by almost all models. The CMIP6 simulations largely confirm the findings from CMIP5 models, but show an increased robustness across models with reduced uncertainties and updated magnitudes towards a stronger increase in monsoon rainfall
Education reform as a governmental strategy
This paper takes the vigorous political debate unleashed in Germany by the results of the PISA study as a stimulus to take a closer look at the strategic aims and effects of the current education reforms, of which the PISA study is only one example. It shows that the reform measures underpin a powerful process of normalisation. Seen in this way, the PISA study, along with other reform measures, can be seen as a âpower stabiliserâ.
In order to understand this situation more precisely, the paper turns to Foucaultâs consideration of the âanalytics of powerâ. The studies of governmentality inspired by Foucault, in particular, contribute to a more precise grasp of neoliberalismâs techniques of government. They indicate how techniques of political domination are linked with âtechnologies of the selfâ. The âdiscourse of self-organisationâ can be seen as the core of a governmental strategy to assimilate education more thoroughly than ever before into the network of disciplinary procedures.Grupo FORCE (HUM-386). Untiefen im Mainstream. Zur Kritik konstruktivistisch-systemtheoretischer PĂ€dagogik - 1. Auflage
(DIPF/Orig.)The relation between \u27freedom\u27 and \u27society of control\u27 in the current context of education reform is considered in five deliberations. In the first deliberation Foucaultâs analysis of the disciplinary societies is applied to the implementation of \u27soft disciplinary techniques\u27 in the context of the New Education program. In a second deliberation the crisis of the \u27enclosed environments\u27 is discussed in accordance with Deleuzeâs famous postscript on the \u27society of control\u27. In the third deliberation, the perspective of the society of control is linked to the new forms of \u27governing the social\u27, which add the dimension of a \u27moral rearmament\u27 of the individual to the economic and social processes of deregulation. The fourth deliberation addresses the question of how the governmental strategies impact on the current educational reforms. Finally, the inherent contradictions and limitations of governmental steering practices and also the \u27governmentality studies\u27 are under scrutiny
Evaluating two soil carbon models within the global land surface model JSBACH using surface and spaceborne observations of atmospheric CO2
The trajectories of soil carbon (C) in the changing climate are of utmost importance, as soil carbon is a substantial carbon storage with a large potential to impact the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) burden. Atmospheric CO2 observations integrate all processes affecting C exchange between the surface and the atmosphere. Therefore they provide a benchmark for carbon cycle models. We evaluated two distinct soil carbon models (CBALANCE and YASSO) that were implemented to a global land surface model (JSBACH) against atmospheric CO2 observations. We transported the biospheric carbon fluxes obtained by JSBACH using the atmospheric transport model TM5 to obtain atmospheric CO2. We then compared these results with surface observations from Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) stations as well as with column XCO2 retrievals from the GOSAT satellite. The seasonal cycles of atmospheric CO2 estimated by the two different soil models differed. The estimates from the CBALANCE soil model were more in line with the surface observations at low latitudes (0âNâ45âN) with only 1â% bias in the seasonal cycle amplitude (SCA), whereas YASSO was underestimating the SCA in this region by 32â%. YASSO gave more realistic seasonal cycle amplitudes of CO2 at northern boreal sites (north of 45âN) with underestimation of 15â% compared to 30â% overestimation by CBALANCE. Generally, the estimates from CBALANCE were more successful in capturing the seasonal patterns and seasonal cycle amplitudes of atmospheric CO2 even though it overestimated soil carbon stocks by 225â% (compared to underestimation of 36â% by YASSO) and its predictions of the global distribution of soil carbon stocks was unrealistic. The reasons for these differences in the results are related to the different environmental drivers and their functional dependencies of these two soil carbon models. In the tropical region the YASSO model showed earlier increase in season of the heterotophic respiration since it is driven by precipitation instead of soil moisture as CBALANCE. In the temperate and boreal region the role of temperature is more dominant. There the heterotophic respiration from the YASSO model had larger annual variability, driven by air temperature, compared to the CBALANCE which is driven by soil temperature. The results underline the importance of using sub-yearly data in the development of soil carbon models when they are used in shorter than annual time scales
