Counting fixed points and rooted closed walks of the singular map modulo powers of a prime
The "self-power" map modulo and its generalized form modulo are of considerable interest for both theoretical
reasons and for potential applications to cryptography. In this paper, we use
-adic methods, primarily -adic interpolation, Hensel's lemma, and lifting
singular points modulo , to count fixed points and rooted closed walks of
equations related to these maps when is a prime power. In particular, we
introduce a new technique for lifting singular solutions of several congruences

High-speed multi-dimensional relative navigation for uncooperative space objects
This work proposes a high-speed Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) based navigation architecture that is appropriate for uncooperative relative space navigation applications. In contrast to current solutions that exploit 3D LIDAR data, our architecture transforms the odometry problem from the 3D space into multiple 2.5D ones and completes the odometry problem by utilizing a recursive filtering scheme. Trials evaluate several current state-of-the-art 2D keypoint detection and local feature description methods as well as recursive filtering techniques on a number of simulated but credible scenarios that involve a satellite model developed by Thales Alenia Space (France). Most appealing performance is attained by the 2D keypoint detector Good Features to Track (GFFT) combined with the feature descriptor KAZE, that are further combined with either the H∞ or the Kalman recursive filter. Experimental results demonstrate that compared to current algorithms, the GFTT/KAZE combination is highly appealing affording one order of magnitude more accurate odometry and a very low processing burden, which depending on the competitor method, may exceed one order of magnitude faster computation
Design-for-test structure to facilitate test vector application with low performance loss in non-test mode.
A switching based circuit is described which allows application of voltage test vectors to internal nodes of a chip without the problem of backdriving. The new circuit has low impact on the performance of an analogue circuit in terms of loss of bandwidth and allows simple application of analogue test voltages into internal nodes. The circuit described facilitates implementation of the forthcoming IEEE 1149.4 DfT philosophy [1]
Exploiting the synergy between carboplatin and ABT-737 in the treatment of ovarian carcinomas
Platinum drug-resistance in ovarian cancers is a major factor contributing to chemotherapeutic resistance of recurrent disease. Members of the Bcl-2 family such as the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-XL have been shown to play a role in this resistance. Consequently, concurrent inhibition of Bcl-XL in combination with standard chemotherapy may improve treatment outcomes for ovarian cancer patients. Here, we develop a mathematical model to investigate the potential of combination therapy with ABT-737, a small molecule inhibitor of Bcl-XL, and carboplatin, a platinum-based drug, on a simulated tumor xenograft. The model is calibrated against in vivo\ud
experimental data, wherein tumor xenografts were established in mice and treated with ABT-737 and carboplatin on a fixed periodic schedule, alone or in combination, and tumor sizes recorded regularly. We show that the validated model can be used to predict the minimum drug load that will achieve a predetermined level of tumor growth inhibition, thereby maximizing the synergy between the two drugs. Our simulations suggest that the time of infusion of each carboplatin dose is a critical parameter, with an 8-hour infusion of carboplatin administered each week combined with a daily bolus dose of ABT-737 predicted to minimize residual disease. We also investigate the potential of ABT-737 co-therapy with carboplatin to prevent or delay the onset of carboplatin-resistance under two scenarios. When resistance is acquired as a result of aberrant DNA-damage repair in cells treated with carboplatin, the model is used to identify drug delivery schedules that induce tumor remission with even low doses of combination therapy. When resistance is intrinsic, due to a pre-existing cohort of resistant cells, tumor remission is no longer feasible, but our model can be used to identify dosing strategies that extend disease-free survival periods. These results underscore the potential of our model to accelerate the development of novel therapeutics such as ABT-737, by predicting optimal treatment strategies when these drugs are given in combination with currently approved cancer medications
School refusal and isolation: the perspectives of five adolescent school refusers in London, UK
Research has identified a subset of young people who feel unable to engage in mainstream education. Given the hard-to-reach nature of this group, their views on what has caused their isolation from others have received little focus in previous literature. The present study aimed to explore the experiences and views of a subset of young people seen within an inner London Pupil Referral Unit who were extremely socially withdrawn and unable to attend mainstream education. They were asked what they believe led them to their current situation, the impact of isolation, how their life is going and what they value. Key themes identified were the role of anxiety in withdrawal from education and the protective capacity of social contact, even via social media, in preventing negative outcomes of withdrawal. Sleep, health, education, family and social contact were identified as risk and protective factors and were also things participants identified as values. This research provides insight into potential ways to support young people in returning to mainstream education as well as ideas for preventative measures that may protect future generations from such extreme isolation. This research was conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic, but lessons learned bear relevance in current times
The many levels pairing Hamiltonian for two pairs
We address the problem of two pairs of fermions living on an arbitrary number
of single particle levels of a potential well (mean field) and interacting
through a pairing force. The associated solutions of the Richardson's equations
are classified in terms of a number , which reduces to the seniority
in the limit of large values of the pairing strength and yields the number
of pairs not developing a collective behaviour, their energy remaining finite
in the limit. We express analytically, through the moments of the
single particle levels distribution, the collective mode energy and the two
critical values and of the coupling which can
exist on a single particle level with no pair degeneracy. Notably and merge when the number of single particle levels
goes to infinity, where they coincide with the (when it exists) of
a one pair system, not envisioned by the Richardson theory. In correspondence
of the system undergoes a transition from a mean field to a
pairing dominated regime. We finally explore the behaviour of the excitation
energies, wave functions and pair transfer amplitudes finding out that the
former, for , come close to the BCS predictions, whereas the
latter display a divergence at , signaling the onset of a long

Profiles of union workplace representatives : evidence from three unions in SW England
As part of a larger research project the authors are examining union responses to workplace and corporate organisational change in the South West of England. This study has concentrated on three unions, the MSF, GMB and AEEU, and has comprised over 100 interviews of workplace representatives from the three unions conducted between 1998 and 2000 throughout the region across a representative range of industrial sectors. A complement to this qualitative research has been analysis of 356 questionnaire returns, concentrating on workplace union changes as well as profiles of the representatives and stewards themselves. Of particular interest have been the personal profiles of workplace representatives and their interaction with members. It is this data which is presented with some commentary in this Research Note
Reducing inappropriate antibiotics prescribing: The role of online commentary on physical examination findings
Objective: This study investigates the relationship of ‘online commentary’(contemporaneous physician comments about physical examination [PE] findings) with (i) parent questioning of the treatment recommendation and (ii) inappropriate antibiotic prescribing. Methods: A nested cross-sectional study of 522 encounters motivated by upper respiratory symptoms in 27 California pediatric practices (38 pediatricians). Physicians completed a post-visit survey regarding physical examination findings, diagnosis, treatment, and whether they perceived the parent as expecting an antibiotic. Taped encounters were coded for ‘problem’ online commentary (PE findings discussed as significant or clearly abnormal) and ‘no problem’ online commentary (PE findings discussed reassuringly as normal or insignificant). Results: Online commentary during the PE occurred in 73% of visits with viral diagnoses (n = 261). Compared to similar cases with ‘no problem’ online commentary, ‘problem’ comments were associated with a 13% greater probability of parents uestioning a non-antibiotic treatment plan (95% CI 0-26%, p = .05,) and a 27% (95% CI: 2-52%, p < .05) greater probability of an inappropriate antibiotic prescription. Conclusion: With viral illnesses, problematic online comments are associated with more pediatrician-parent conflict over non-antibiotic treatment recommendations. This may increase inappropriate antibiotic prescribing. Practice implications: In viral cases, physicians should consider avoiding the use of problematic online commentary
