A unified acquisition system for acoustic data
A multichannel, acoustic AM carrier system was developed for a wide variety of applications, particularly for aircraft noise and sonic boom measurements. Each data acquisition channel consists of a condenser microphone, an acoustic signal converter, and a Zero Drive amplifier, along with peripheral supporting equipment. A control network insures continuous optimal tuning of the converter and permits remote calibration of the condenser microphone. With a 12.70-mm (1/2-in.) condenser microphone, the converter/Zero Drive amplifier combination has a frequency response from 0 Hz to 20 kHz (-3 db), a dynamic range exceeding 70 db, and a minimum noise floor of 50 db ref. 20 micro Pa) in the band 22.4 Hz to 22.4 kHz. The system requires no external impedance matching networks and is insensitive to cable length, at least up to 900 m (3,000 ft). System gain varies only + or - 1 db over the temperature range 4 to 54 C (40 to 130 F). Adapters are available to accommodate 23.77-mm (1-in.) and 6.35-mm (1/4-in.) microphones and to provide 30-db attenuation. A field test to obtain the acoustical time history of a helicopter flyover proved successful
Imagery Rescripting : The Impact of Conceptual and Perceptual Changes on Aversive Autobiographical Memories
BACKGROUND: Imagery rescripting (ImRs) is a process by which aversive autobiographical memories are rendered less unpleasant or emotional. ImRs is thought only to be effective if a change in the meaning-relevant (semantic) content of the mental image is produced, according to a cognitive hypothesis of ImRs. We propose an additional hypothesis: that ImRs can also be effective by the manipulation of perceptual features of the memory, without explicitly targeting meaning-relevant content. METHODS: In two experiments using a within-subjects design (both N = 48, community samples), both Conceptual-ImRs-focusing on changing meaning-relevant content-and Perceptual-ImRs-focusing on changing perceptual features-were compared to Recall-only of aversive autobiographical image-based memories. An active control condition, Recall + Attentional Breathing (Recall+AB) was added in the first experiment. In the second experiment, a Positive-ImRs condition was added-changing the aversive image into a positive image that was unrelated to the aversive autobiographical memory. Effects on the aversive memory's unpleasantness, vividness and emotionality were investigated. RESULTS: In Experiment 1, compared to Recall-only, both Conceptual-ImRs and Perceptual-ImRs led to greater decreases in unpleasantness, and Perceptual-ImRs led to greater decreases in emotionality of memories. In Experiment 2, the effects on unpleasantness were not replicated, and both Conceptual-ImRs and Perceptual-ImRs led to greater decreases in emotionality, compared to Recall-only, as did Positive-ImRs. There were no effects on vividness, and the ImRs conditions did not differ significantly from Recall+AB. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that, in addition to traditional forms of ImRs, targeting the meaning-relevant content of an image during ImRs, relatively simple techniques focusing on perceptual aspects or positive imagery might also yield benefits. Alternative derivation of the Feigel effect and call for its experimental verification
A recent theory by Feigel [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 020404 (2004)] predicts
the finite transfer of momentum from the quantum vacuum to a fluid placed in
strong perpendicular electric and magnetic fields. The momentum transfer arises
because of the optically anisotropic magnetoelectric response induced in the
fluid by the fields. After summarising Feigel's original assumptions and
derivation (corrected of trivial mistakes), we rederive the same result by a
simpler route, validating Feigel's semi-classical approach. We then derive the
stress exerted by the vacuum on the fluid which, if the Feigel hypothesis is
correct, should induce a Poiseuille flow in a tube with maximum speed m/s (2000 times larger than Feigel's original prediction). An experiment
is suggested to test this prediction for an organometallic fluid in a tube
passing through the bore of a high strength magnet. The predicted flow can be
measured directly by tracking microscopy or indirectly by measuring the flow
rate (ml/min) corresponding to the Poiseuille flow. A second
experiment is also proposed whereby a `vacuum radiometer' is used to test a
recent prediction that the net force on a magnetoelectric slab in the vacuum

Anisotropy, disorder, and superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 under high pressure
Resistivity measurements were carried out up to 8 GPa on single crystal and
polycrystalline samples of CeCu2Si2 from differing sources in the homogeneity
range. The anisotropic response to current direction and small uniaxial
stresses was explored, taking advantage of the quasi-hydrostatic environment of
the Bridgman anvil cell. It was found that both the superconducting transition
temperature Tc and the normal state properties are very sensitive to uniaxial
stress, which leads to a shift of the valence instability pressure Pv and a
small but significant change in Tc for different orientations with respect to
the tetragonal c-axis. Coexistence of superconductivity and residual
resistivity close to the Ioffe-Regel limit around 5 GPa provides a compelling
argument for the existence of a valence-fluctuation mediated pairing
interaction at high pressure in CeCu2Si2.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Recommendations to support deprescribing medications late in life
It is widely acknowledged that patientsāparticularly those late in lifeāare frequently exposed to the harms of medication. To minimize these harms, several frameworks have been developed by which prescribing can be optimized. In the context of diminishing life expectancy, these frameworks can be used to reduce medications that are no longer necessary, but appear to fall short of actual guidelines that incorporate a consideration of stopping medications. In this commentary, we present recommendations that could be incorporated into prescribing processes for all healthcare professionals and, ultimately, used to support the rationalization or deprescribing of medication in diminished life expectancy. We frame these recommendations in the same context as guidance for the initiation and discontinuation of implantable cardiac devices and argue that the two processesāwith regards to decision-makingāshould be the same. We present our recommendations with preventive medication use in mind, and use statin therapy as an illustrative example
