    Structural and magnetic properties of E-Fe_{1-x}Co_xSi thin films deposited via pulsed laser deposition

    We report pulsed laser deposition synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline Fe1-xCox Si thin films on Si (111). X-ray diffraction, transmission electron, and atomic force microscopies reveal films to be dense, very smooth, and single phase with a cubic B20 crystal structure. Ferromagnetism with significant magnetic hysteresis is found for all films including nominally pure FeSi films in contrast to the very weak paramagnetism of bulk FeSi. For Fe1-xCoxSi this signifies a change from helimagnetism in bulk, to ferromagnetism in thin films. These ferromagnetic thin films are promising as a magnetic-silicide/silicon system for polarized current production, manipulation, and detection.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures accepted in the Applied Physics Letter

    Preliminary characterization of residual biomass from Hibiscus sabdariffa Calyces

    Hibiscus sabdariffa calyces are mainly used for different agro-food and beverages applications. The residual biomass generated contains various useful substances that were extracted and characterized. It contained 23% (w/w) soluble pectic material, a food additive, extracted with hot acidified water (80°C, pH = 1.5) and precipitated with ethanol. The molecular weight (28.5 and 109.7 kDa), the degree of methylation (70.6 and 44.3%) and the degree of acetylation (19.0 and 4.9%) were determined for two Senegalese cultivars (koor and vimto, respectively). The effect of the extraction method on these parameters was highlighted. The residual lignocellulosic material (LCM) was chemically degraded to monosaccharides and the amount of glucose and xylose (39% of dry LCM) determined to estimate its potential as feedstock for biofuels production. However, an enzymatic degradation test revealed a recalcitrant LCM, as only 50 to 55% of its polymeric glucose content was degraded to monosaccharides without pretreatment. Xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) are functional foods with a real market potential as prebiotics, characterized by their degree of polymerization (DP). The production of XOS synthetized by the enzymatic degradation of LCM was monitored. The results of analyses performed showed that XOS produced had mainly DP3 and DP4 values.Key words: Pectin, lignocellulosic material, enzymatic degradation, xylo-oligosaccharides

    Automated computer-based detection of encounter behaviours in groups of honeybees.

    Honeybees form societies in which thousands of members integrate their behaviours to act as a single functional unit. We have little knowledge on how the collaborative features are regulated by workers' activities because we lack methods that enable collection of simultaneous and continuous behavioural information for each worker bee. In this study, we introduce the Bee Behavioral Annotation System (BBAS), which enables the automated detection of bees' behaviours in small observation hives. Continuous information on position and orientation were obtained by marking worker bees with 2D barcodes in a small observation hive. We computed behavioural and social features from the tracking information to train a behaviour classifier for encounter behaviours (interaction of workers via antennation) using a machine learning-based system. The classifier correctly detected 93% of the encounter behaviours in a group of bees, whereas 13% of the falsely classified behaviours were unrelated to encounter behaviours. The possibility of building accurate classifiers for automatically annotating behaviours may allow for the examination of individual behaviours of worker bees in the social environments of small observation hives. We envisage that BBAS will be a powerful tool for detecting the effects of experimental manipulation of social attributes and sub-lethal effects of pesticides on behaviour

    Uptake of agroforestry-based crop management in the semi-arid Sahel – Analysis of joint decisions and adoption determinants.

    Open Access JournalIntroduction: Agroforestry plays a vital role in maintaining and developing the resilience and productivity of farms and landscapes. Scientific evidence from the Sahel region suggests that integration of trees and shrubs has the potential to improve temperature and moisture levels whilst providing bio-based fertilizer that contributes to increased yields of annual crops. However, little is known about the factors that influence the diusion of agroforestry. This study examines joint decisions on the use of agroforestry alongside other complementary agricultural practices and disentangles agroforestry awareness fromadoption and disadoption decisions. Methods: Our analysis is based on a comprehensive farm-level dataset covering almost 3,000 farm households in Mali and Senegal. A large number of adoption determinants are utilized, with a special focus on information access, information flows and social groups. Results: The findings suggest that extension access and training participation boost awareness of agroforestry-based soil fertility management, while information provided by public extension, NGOs and community members is strongly associated with higher adoption intensity. In the analysis of disadoption, farmer-to-farmers exchange in the community was found to be a key factor in the decision to maintain agroforestry use. Membership in cooperatives and youth groups appear to have a favorable eect on awareness and adoption in Mali, but less so in the Senegalese case. Similarly, only results from Mali show that adoption of agroforestry is accompanied by the adoption of other sustainable intensification practices and lower use of synthetic pesticides. Discussion: We conclude that in order to support the transition to more widespread agroforestry-based soil fertility management, it is essential to strengthen public and NGO-based advisory systems that fully engage with local knowledge networks

    Microstructure effects on the phase transition behavior of a prototypical quantum material

    Materials with insulator metal transitions promise advanced functionalities for future information technology. Patterning on the microscale is key for miniaturized functional devices, but material properties may vary spatially across microstructures. Characterization of these miniaturized devices requires electronic structure probes with sufficient spatial resolution to understand the influence of structure size and shape on functional properties. The present study demonstrates the use of imaging soft X ray absorption spectroscopy with a spatial resolution better than 2 amp; 956;m to study the insulator metal transition in vanadium dioxide thin film microstructures. This novel technique reveals that the transition temperature for the conversion from insulating to metallic vanadium dioxide is lowered by 1.2 K 0.4 K close to the structure edges compared to the center. Facilitated strain release during the phase transition is discussed as origin of the observed behavior.
