    Existence and multiplicity for elliptic problems with quadratic growth in the gradient

    We show that a class of divergence-form elliptic problems with quadratic growth in the gradient and non-coercive zero order terms are solvable, under essentially optimal hypotheses on the coefficients in the equation. In addition, we prove that the solutions are in general not unique. The case where the zero order term has the opposite sign was already intensively studied and the uniqueness is the rule.Comment: To appear in Comm. PD

    The prognostic value of stromal and epithelial periostin expression in human breast cancer: Correlation with clinical pathological features and mortality outcome

    open6noBackground: PN is a secreted cell adhesion protein critical for carcinogenesis. In breast cancer, it is overexpressed compared to normal breast, and a few reports suggest that it has a potential role as a prognostic marker. Methods: Tumour samples obtained at the time of mastectomy from 200 women followed for a median time of 18.7 years (range 0.5-29.5 years) were investigated through IHC with a polyclonal anti-PN antibody using tissue microarrays. Epithelial and stromal PN expression were scored independently according to the percentage of coloured cells; the 60th percentile of PN epithelial expression, corresponding to 1 %, and the median value of PN stromal expression, corresponding to 90 %, were used as arbitrary cut-offs. The relationships between epithelial and stromal PN expression and clinicalpathological features, tumour phenotype and the risk of mortality following surgery were analysed. Appropriate statistics, including the Fine and Gray competing risk proportional hazard regression model, were used. Results: The expression of PN in tumour epithelial cells was significantly lower than that which was observed in stromal cells (p < 0.000). No specific association between epithelial or stromal PN expression and any of the clinicalpathological parameters analysed was found as it was observed in respect to mortality when these variables were analysed individually. However, when both variables were considered as a function of the other one, the expression of PN in the stromal cells maintained a statistically significant predictive value with respect to both all causes and cancerspecific mortality only in the presence of high epithelial expression levels. No significant differences in either all causes or BCa-specific mortality rates were shown according to epithelial expression for tumours displaying higher stromal PN expression rates. However, the trends were opposite for the higher stromal values and the patients with high epithelial expression levels denoted the group with the worst prognosis, while higher epithelial values in patients with lower stromal expression levels denoted the group with the best prognosis, suggesting that PN epithelial/stromal interactions play a crucial role in breast carcinogenesis, most likely due to functional cross-talk between the two compartments. On the basis of PN expression in both compartments, we defined 4 subgroups of patients with different mortality rates with the group of patients characterized by positive epithelial and low stromal PN expression cells showing the lowest mortality risk as opposed to the groups of patients identified by a high PN expression in both cell compartments or those identified by a low or absent PN expression in both cell compartments showing the worst mortality rates. The differences were highly statistically significant and were also retained after multiparametric analysis. Competing risk analysis demonstrated that PN expression patterns characterizing each of previous groups are specifically associated with cancer-specific mortality.     From Computational Fluid Dynamics to Structure Interpretation via Neural Networks: An Application to Flow and Transport in Porous Media

    The modeling of flow and transport in porous media is of the utmost importance in many chemical engineering applications, including catalytic reactors, batteries, and CO2 storage. The aim of this study is to test the use of fully connected (FCNN) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) for the prediction of crucial properties in porous media systems: The permeability and the filtration rate. The data-driven models are trained on a dataset of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. To this end, the porous media geometries are created in silico by a discrete element method, and a rigorous setup of the CFD simulations is presented. The models trained have as input both geometrical and operating conditions features so that they could find application in multiscale modeling, optimization problems, and in-line control. The average error on the prediction of the permeability is lower than 2.5%, and that on the prediction of the filtration rate is lower than 5% in all the neural networks models. These results are achieved with at least a dataset of ~ 100 CFD simulations

    Road network comparison and matching techniques. a workflow proposal for the integration of traffic message channel and open source network datasets

    The rapid growth of methods and techniques to acquire geospatial data has led to a wide availability of overlapping geographic datasets with different characteristics. Road network data sources are today a significant number, with high differences in level of detail and modelling schemas, depending on the main purpose. In addition, continuous information about people and freight movement is today available also in real-time. This type of data is today exchanged between traffic operators using referencing standards as Traffic Message Channel. Integrating these heterogeneous databases, in order to build an added value product, is a serious task in geographical data management. The paper is focus on techniques to conflate the Traffic message Channel logical network on Open Source road network dataset, in order to allow the precise visualisation of traffic data also in real-time. A first step of the research was the quality assessment of available Open Source (OS) road network dataset, then, a specific procedure to conflate data was set up, using an iterative process in order to reduce at every step the number of possible matching features. A first application of the enhanced OTM dataset is shown for the city of Turin: real-time open data of traffic flows recorded by road network fixed sensors, made available by the metropolitan Traffic Operation Centre (5T) and based on the TMC location referencing, are matched on the OTM road network, allowing a detailed real-time visualisation of traffic state

    DEFINITION OF A METHODOLOGY TO DERIVE ROAD NETWORK FUNCTIONAL HIERARCHY CLASSES USING CAR TRACKING DATA

    Road network functional hierarchy classifies individual roads into several levels, for efficient traffic management and road network generalization purposes. Automatic and semi-automatic road network extraction methods exist, but the generated products normally lack information on its functional hierarchy. This paper presents a methodology for automatically retrieve functional hierarchy for an OpenStreetMap derived road network from Floating Car Data, obtaining evenly distributed (e.g. for generalization purposes) or dynamic (e.g. to take into account differences in traffic volumes in different moments of the day) classifications. Road network elements are classified in function of vehicle speed values: the class distribution generated with the proposed methodology follows a linear distribution that can be better exploited for generalization purposes. Furthermore, the methodology allows to clearly distinguish different distributions in different moments of the day and days of the week, supporting traffic management activities

    Abstract. In urban and metropolitan context, Traffic Operations Centres (TOCs) use technologies as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to tackling urban mobility issue. Usually in TOCs, various isolated systems are maintained in parallel (stored in different databases), and data comes from different sources: a challenge in transport management is to transfer disparate data into a unified data management system that preserves access to legacy data, allowing multi-thematic analysis. This need of integration between systems is important for a wise policy decision.This study aims to design a comprehensive and general spatial data model that could allow the integration and visualization of traffic components and measures. The activity is focused on the case study of 5T Agency in Turin, a TOC that manages traffic regulation, public transit fleets and information to users, in the metropolitan area of Turin and Piedmont Region.The idea is not to replace the existing implemented and efficient system, but to built-up on these systems a GIS that overpass the different software and DBMS platforms and that can demonstrate how a spatial and horizontal vision in tackling urban mobility issues may be useful for policy and strategies decisions. The modelling activity take reference from a review of transport standards and results in database general schema, which can be reused by other TOCs in their activities, helping the integration and coordination between different TOCs. The final output of the research is an ArcGIS geodatabase, which enable the customised representation of private traffic elements and measures.</p

    Impact of colostral administration practices on the outcome of diarrhoeic calves and future therapeutic options for the failure of passive transfer of immunity

    Neonatal calf diarrhoea (NCD) is one of the most important problems in calf rearing in dairy farms worldwide. The U.S. National Animal Health Monitoring System reported that 57% of weaning calf mortality is dued to diarrhoea and most cases occurred in calves less than 1 month old. In Europe NCD is the most important disease problem in calves and causes a great economic loss. Diarrhoea is a complex, multifactorial disease with numerous infectious and noninfectious factors. Although different studies have aimed to identify risk factors for the presence of NCD in farms, little is known about factors involved in the outcome in affected calves. Indeed, only few investigations are available in calves on the influence of some biochemical data on outcome of neonatal diarrhoea. When adequate amounts of immunoglobulins (IgG) are not absorbed, calves are defined as having failure of passive transfer (FPT). Passive transfer of immunity is a critical factor and an important concern for the management of neonatal calf health. Despite the significant progress made in understanding biology and mechanisms of FPT, the application of this knowledge into improved treatments of sick calves has been limited because absorption of colostral components by the intestine of calves decreases quickly, and completely ceases approximately 24 h after birth, limiting the time available for the veterinarians to administer colostrum therapeutically. Immunoglobulin transfusion through plasma administration is empirically recommended as a therapeutic intervention in calves with FPT but the experimental data are rather controversial and there is no general agreement about the correct dosage of IgG in the treatment of FPT. The specific objectives of this research are 1) to identify risk factors associated with outcome of the neonatal diarrhoea in calves undergoing standard therapy protocol. In particular to study the hematological, biochemical and clinical values to predict the fate of diarrhoeic calves, 2) compare sIgG and sTP in a control group of calves fed with a high quality colostrum vs. a treated group of colostrum\u2013deprived calves submitted to an IV administration of IgG by plasma transfusion, in order to establish the dose of IgG which could provide a serum protective level (10 g/L)

    Computational analysis of transport in three-dimensional heterogeneous materials: An OpenFOAM®-based simulation framework

    Porous and heterogeneous materials are found in many applications from composites, membranes, chemical reactors, and other engineered materials to biological matter and natural subsurface structures. In this work we propose an integrated approach to generate, study and upscale transport equations in random and periodic porous structures. The geometry generation is based on random algorithms or ballistic deposition. In particular, a new algorithm is proposed to generate random packings of ellipsoids with random orientation and tunable porosity and connectivity. The porous structure is then meshed using locally refined Cartesian-based or unstructured strategies. Transport equations are thus solved in a finite-volume formulation with quasi-periodic boundary conditions to simplify the upscaling problem by solving simple closure problems consistent with the classical theory of homogenisation for linear advection–diffusion–reaction operators. Existing simulation codes are extended with novel developments and integrated to produce a fully open-source simulation pipeline. A showcase of a few interesting three-dimensional applications of these computational approaches is then presented. Firstly, convergence properties and the transport and dispersion properties of a periodic arrangement of spheres are studied. Then, heat transfer problems are considered in a pipe with layers of deposited particles of different heights, and in heterogeneous anisotropic materials
