Upper Paleozoic Dikes of the MarĂŁo Mountain (Northern Portugal); results of intra orogenic Extension?

[Abstract] In the MarĂŁo mountain occur hercynian mafic veins cutting the Schistose Formation of the Landeilian age. The geochemistry of these rocks present high concentrations on Ti ,P, Zr, Nb, Ba, and REE (Ti O2= 1.23-1,39 %, P2O5= 1.32-1,60 %, Zr = 565-641 ppm, Nb= 33-46 ppm, Ba = 2531-3219 ppm, ÎŁREE = 295-430 ppm) and indicate significant REE fractionation (CeN/ Y bN= 10.46) similar to that reported for alkaline mafic rocks. These characteristics and their patterns in THOMPSON (1984) diagram are typical of alkaline rocks. The dikes intrusion occurred in a late stage of the tectonic evolution of the Centro-Iberian autochthon prior to the granitic magmatic phase. Their intrusion was facilitated, either by the reorientation of the stress field due to the emplacement of the NW Iberian nappe complex or local extensions common in transpressive regimes. This geodynamical context could produce the generation of alkaline magmatism due to partial melting of the upper mantle, induced by adiabatical decompression in the major crustal NW-SE shear zones

Community resilience to climate change: an evidence review

How is the resilience of communities to climate change in the UK currently understood and practised? The concept of community resilience to climate change in the UK has a diverse range of meanings and associated activities. This review of evidence and practice explores this varied and contested field to build the evidence base and help support the development of community resilience to climate change

The national inventory of geological heritage: methodological approach and results

    Get PDF
The existence of a national inventory of the geological heritage is of paramount importance for the implementation of a geoconservation strategy. This paper presents the methodological approach used to produce the most complete geosites inventory in Portugal, so far, and the obtained results. This inventory will be uploaded into the National Database of Natural Heritage managed by the Portuguese authority for nature conservation.

Sympathy and Tenderness as Components of Dispositional Empathic Concern: Predicting Helping and Caring Behaviors

Recently, empathic concern was separated into the components of sympathy and tenderness (Lishner, Batson, & Huss, 2011). So far, these two emotional experiences have been assessed as episodic emotional responses, as the existent dispositional measures remain blind to such distinction. The aim of the present research is to develop and validate a dispositional measure that captures the personal disposition to feel sympathy, tenderness, and personal distress. This new scale is called Sympathy, Tenderness and Distress Dispositional Scale (SyTeD). In Study 1, we developed and tested the internal consistency and factor structure of the English version of the scale in the United States. In Study 2, we translated the scale into Spanish and tested its content and criterion validity in Spain. In Study 3, we tested the predictive validity of the sympathy-tenderness distinction within a helping vs. a care-based scenario in the United Kingdom (SyTeD-English version). In Study 4, we tested the predictive validity of the sympathy-tenderness distinction in a real helping situation in Spain (SyTeD-Spanish version). The results across these four studies suggest that the SyTeD is a useful measure of dispositional sympathy and tenderness that allows studying further different types of prosocial behavior (i.e., help vs. care)

Gardens of happiness: Sir William Temple, temperance and China

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this recordSir William Temple, an English statesman and humanist, wrote “Upon the Gardens of Epicurus” in 1685, taking a neo-epicurean approach to happiness and temperance. In accord with Pierre Gassendi’s epicureanism, “happiness” is characterised as freedom from disturbance and pain in mind and body, whereas “temperance” means following nature (Providence and one’s physiopsychological constitution). For Temple, cultivating fruit trees in his garden was analogous to the threefold cultivation of temperance as a virtue in the humoral body (as food), the mind (as freedom from the passions), and the bodyeconomic (as circulating goods) in order to attain happiness. A regimen that was supposed to cure the malaise of Restoration amidst a crisis of unbridled passions, this threefold cultivation of temperance underlines Temple’s reception of China and Confucianism wherein happiness and temperance are highlighted. Thus Temple’s “gardens of happiness” represent not only a reinterpretation of classical ideas, but also his dialogue with China.European CommissionLeverhulme Trus
