Educational Mismatch Among Ph.D.s: Determinants and Consequences

    Get PDF
Using the Survey of Doctoral Recipients, the magnitude and consequences of job mismatch are estimated for Ph.D.s in science. Approximately one-sixth of academics and nearly one-half of nonacademics report some degree of mismatch. The influence of job mismatch is estimated for three job outcomes: earnings, job satisfaction and turnover. Surprisingly large and robust influences emerge. Mismatch is associated with substantially lower earnings, lower job satisfaction and a higher rate of turnover. These results persist across a variety of specifications and hold for both academics and nonacademics. Estimates of the determinants of mismatch indicate that older workers and those in rapidly changing disciplines are more likely to be mismatched and there is a suggestion that women are more likely to be mismatched.

A model which predicts nitric oxide and carbon monoxide emissions from a swirl can modular combustor is discussed. A detailed analysis of the turbulent fuel-air mixing process in the swirl can module wake region is reviewed. Hot wire anemometry was employed, and gas sampling analysis of fuel combustion emissions were performed

Data analytics for modeling and visualizing attack behaviors: A case study on SSH brute force attacks

    Get PDF
In this research, we explore a data analytics based approach for modeling and visualizing attack behaviors. To this end, we employ Self-Organizing Map and Association Rule Mining algorithms to analyze and interpret the behaviors of SSH brute force attacks and SSH normal traffic as a case study. The experimental results based on four different data sets show that the patterns extracted and interpreted from the SSH brute force attack data sets are similar to each other but significantly different from those extracted from the SSH normal traffic data sets. The analysis of the attack traffic provides insight into behavior modeling for brute force SSH attacks. Furthermore, this sheds light into how data analytics could help in modeling and visualizing attack behaviors in general in terms of data acquisition and feature extraction

A series of fundamental problems related to jet engine air pollution and combustion were examined. These include soot formation and oxidation, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide emissions mechanisms, pollutant dispension, flow and combustion characteristics of the NASA swirl can combustor, fuel atomization and fuel-air mixing processes, fuel spray drop velocity and size measurement, ignition and blowout. A summary of this work, and a bibliography of 41 theses and publications which describe this work, with abstracts, is included

Elizabeth Kee : A Clarion Voice of and for the People of Southern West Virginia 1951-1964

Elizabeth Kee served as the first woman to represent West Virginia in the House of Representatives from 1951-1964. Newly available sources: taped interviews with her son, Jim Kee, from 1978 and 1980; a complete copy of Elizabeth Keeā€™s entries into the Congressional Record; copies of many of her ā€œKeenotesā€ columns from the late 1950s and early 1960s; and correspondence between Elizabeth Kee and veterans from West Virginia from 1961-1963 allow a more complete picture of Kee to emerge. Elizabeth Kee was not only a hardworking politician, who laid the groundwork for future programs like the War on Poverty, she was also a religious and moral person, who shared her values with members of the House in an effort to raise the standards and behavior within that institution. Finally, Kee was a talented writer whose weekly columns illustrate a woman ahead of her time in terms of her ability to remain connected to her constituents

Separate processing of texture and form in the ventral stream : evidence from fMRI and visual agnosia.

Real-life visual object recognition requires the processing of more than just geometric (shape, size, and orientation) properties. Surface properties such as color and texture are equally important, particularly for providing information about the material properties of objects. Recent neuroimaging research suggests that geometric and surface properties are dealt with separately, within the lateral occipital cortex (LOC) and the collateral sulcus (CoS), respectively. Here we compared objects that either differed in aspect ratio or in surface texture only, keeping all other visual properties constant. Results on brain-intact participants confirmed that surface texture activates an area in the posterior CoS, quite distinct from the area activated by shape within LOC. We also tested two patients with visual object agnosia, one of whom (DF) performed well on the texture task but at chance on the shape task, while the other (MS) showed the converse pattern. This behavioral double dissociation was matched by a parallel neuroimaging dissociation, with activation in CoS but not LOC in patient DF, and activation in LOC but not CoS in patient MS. These data provide presumptive evidence that the areas respectively activated by shape and texture play a causally necessary role in the perceptual discrimination of these features
