    Albur, “naquiza”, camp y manierismo en el cabaret de Regina Orozco

    This essay analyses the work of Mexican cabaret artist Regina Orozco, focusing in particular on the incorporation of the operatic tradition in cabaret, the cultural dynamic of Mexican albur and the visual aesthetics of her performances. Her strategic use of the albur is seen as a way to subvert notions of gender and the female body. It is also related to her creative use of popular, regional and academic musical genres (e.g., opera and bel canto). The mixture of elements of so-called high and low culture is discussed in connection with Carlos Monsiváis’s ideas regarding naquiza and lo naco, and also with regard to the artistic origins of mannerism and camp.     This essay evaluates Mexican cabaret as a genre revived and expanded in the last 25 years. I briefly analyze the first generation of contemporary cabaret performers, as well as more recent artists including Las Reinas Chulas and Carlos Pascual, among others. The history and characteristics of the genre are touched upon, emphasizing the fact that artists and companies do not necessarily share common aesthetic or dramatic purposes. Overall, it explores Mexican cabaret as a counter-symbolic art form established to a large extent as a response to the post-modern deterritorialization of traditional forms of human interaction. In this sense, this essay departs from the theoretical framework of Slavoj Zizek, who affirms that in late capitalism symbolic organic links, created by communities, are progressively eliminated.     Wealthy people do better? Experimental Evidence on Endogenous Time Preference Heterogeneity and the Effect of Wealth in Renewable Common-Pool Resources Exploitation

    Aiming to better characterize the exploitation behavior of renewable common-pool resources, in this paper we explore alternative hypothesis about the valuation of the future by the agents and the possibility of heterogeneous behavior on this regard. To do this, we further analyze the experimental data of an N-person discrete-time deterministic dynamic game of T periods fixed duration. Firstly, we consider the homogeneous case where withdrawers’ rate of time preference is symmetrically determined. Then, we calibrate the best fitting model assuming alternatively, exogenous and endogenous time preference. The exogenous time preference case is the traditional assumption in modeling intertemporal choices, i.e. every period, players discount future values at the same level. In the endogenous case, we statistically model the reduced form of the discount factor as a transformation of a second order polynomial on wealth. Secondly, we further explore the endogenous case looking forward to assess the extent of heterogeneity in the rate of time preference formation process. Dynamic problems resolution gives scope for the implementation of ‘rules of thumb’ as a consequence of its' intrinsic complexity. Then, in order to identify the different decisions rules and to classify appropriators within them, we implement a Bayesian classification algorithm based on Houser et al (2004) work. The application of this econometric procedure has allowed us to identify two types of appropriators: “Quasi Myopic” (QM) appropriators and “Disrupted Farsighted” (DF) appropriators. The algorithm has classified near 85% of the appropriators in our sample as QM, and 5% as DF; the lasting agents could not be identified. We used the fitted empirical model to perform simulations. Some results are: (i) initial wealth increase the average efficiency of exploitation; (ii) when initial wealth is high (low), a more equally (unequally) distribution of wealth between types results in higher efficiency in the exploitation of the resource.

    Chern-Simons action for inhomogeneous Virasoro group as an extension of three dimensional flat gravity

    We initiate the study of a Chern-Simons action associated to the semi-direct sum of the Virasoro algebra with its coadjoint representation. This model extends the standard Chern-Simons formulation of three dimensional flat gravity and is similar to the higher-spin extension of three dimensional anti-de Sitter or flat gravity.     Supporting Teachers’ Learning about Mathematical Modeling

    In the United States, one of the Standards for Mathematical Practice of the Common Core Curriculum (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2010) is Model with mathematics. This standard requires that students be taught in a manner that will enable them to ―apply the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace‖ (p. 7). However many prospective and practicing teachers acquire a pedagogical style that does not support this standard. To promote higher levels of student thinking associated with mathematical modeling, teachers must thus be taught not only what mathematical modeling is, but how it can be effectively incorporated in their lessons and presented to their classes. Teacher training should also include how to develop rubrics for assessment, among which are rubrics that enable students to demonstrate mathematical modeling proficiency in different ways. In this research, the topics addressed include ways professional development can help in-service teachers appreciate the importance of mathematical modeling tasks; concerns about teacher backgrounds in mathematical modeling; and the most effective ways for improving in-service teachers’ knowledge of mathematical modeling and their teaching of mathematical modeling. While the primary focus of this research is on teacher education and training in the United States, the findings from both domestic and international research are clearly significant for those who are responsible for various aspects of teacher preparation worldwide

    La información litológica mejora los modelos de distribución de especies de plantas basados en datos de baja resolución espacial

    The aim of this study was to assess the improvement of plant species distribution models based on coarse-grained occurrence data when adding lithologic data to climatic models. The distributions of 40 woody plant species from continental Spain were modelled. A logistic regression model with climatic predictors was fitted for each species and compared to a second model with climatic and lithologic predictors. Improvements on model likelihood and prediction accuracy on validation subsamples were assessed, as well as the effect of calcicole–calcifuge habit on model improvemenClimatic models had reasonable mean prediction accuracy, but adding lithologic data improved model likelihood in most cases and increased mean prediction accuracy. Therefore, we recommend utilizing lithologic data for species distribution models based on coarse-grained occurrence data. Our data did not support the hypothesis that calcicole–calcifuge habit may explain model improvement when adding lithologic data to climatic models, but further research is needed.El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la mejora que supone la incorporación de la litología a modelos climáticos de distribución de especies basados en datos de baja resolución espacial. La zona de estudio es la España peninsular. Se ha ajustado un modelo de regresión logística con variables climáticas para cada una de las 40 especies vegetales consideradas y se ha comparado a un segundo modelo con variables climáticas y litológicas. Se ha evaluado la mejora en la verosimilitud y la capacidad predictiva en submuestras de validación, así como el efecto del grado de preferencia de las especies por suelos calcáreos o silíceos en dicha mejora. Los modelos climáticos ofrecen una capacidad predictiva media razonablemente buena, pero la adición de la litología aumenta la verosimilitud del modelo en la mayoría de los casos y la precisión media de las predicciones aumentan significativamente. Se recomienda utilizar información litológica para los modelos de distribución de especies de plantas basados en datos de baja resolución espacial. Con los datos usados no se puede aceptar la hipótesis de que el grado de preferencia de las especies por suelos calcáreos o silíceos explica las diferencias entre especies en la mejora de los modelos debido a la incorporación de información litológica, pero este aspecto debe ser estudiado con más profundidad en futuras investigaciones

    The Yamabe invariant for axially symmetric two Kerr black holes initial data

    An explicit 3-dimensional Riemannian metric is constructed which can be interpreted as the (conformal) sum of two Kerr black holes with aligned angular momentum. When the separation distance between them is large we prove that this metric has positive Ricci scalar and hence positive Yamabe invariant. This metric can be used to construct axially symmetric initial data for two Kerr black holes with large angular momentum.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

    Reproductive phenology of Pouteria splendens (Sapotaceae)

    Indexación: Web of Science; ScieloPouteria splendens (A.DC.) Kuntze (lúcumo silvestre, palo colorado) es un arbusto endémico con problemas de conservación de Chile central. Es la única especie representante de la familia Sapotaceae en el país y se conoce muy poco de su ciclo de vida. Se estudió su fenología reproductiva durante la primavera y verano, desde septiembre 2007 hasta abril 2008, en la población remanente más grande, localizada en Los Molles (V Región de Valparaíso). Se encontró un incremento en la producción de yemas florales, flores y frutos desde septiembre a febrero, decayendo en marzo. Al igual que en otras especies de ambientes mediterráneos, el máximo en la formación de botones florales, flores y frutos ocurrió en época de verano, durante febrero. También detectamos una alta sincronía en la fenología entre los individuos en la población estudiada. PALABRAS CLAVE: Planta amenazada, floración, fructificación, lúcumo silvestre.Pouteria splendens (A.DC.) Kuntze (lúcumo silvestre, palo colorado) is an endemic and in dangered tree from Central Chile. It's the only member of the Sapotaceae family in the country and little is known about his life cycle. We studied the reproductive phenology during Spring and Summer, from September 2007 to April 2008, on the biggest remained population of P. splendens, located in Los Molles (V Región Valparaíso). We recorded an increase in the production of flower buds, flowers and fruits from September to February, decaying in March. According with other species from Mediterranean environments, the peak of flower buds, flowers and fruits was recorded during Summer, in February.
