Texture transitions in the liquid crystalline alkyloxybenzoic acid 6OBAC
The 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic acid 6OBAC has a very rich variety of crystalline
structures and two nematic sub-phases, characterised by different textures. It
is a material belonging to a family of liquid crystals formed by hydrogen
bonded molecules, the 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic acids indicates the homologue
number). The homologues with n ranging from 7 to 13 display both smectic C and
N phases. In spite of the absence of a smectic phase, 6OBAC exhibits two
sub-phases with different textures, as it happens in other materials of the
homologue series which possess the smectic phase. This is the first material
that exhibits a texture transition in a nematic phase directly originated from
a crystal phase. Here we present the results of an image processing assisted
optical investigation to characterise the textures and the transitions between
textures. This processing is necessary to discriminate between crystal
modifications and nematic sub-phases.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
Modified Baryonic Dynamics: two-component cosmological simulations with light sterile neutrinos
In this article we continue to test cosmological models centred on Modified
Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) with light sterile neutrinos, which could in
principle be a way to solve the fine-tuning problems of the standard model on
galaxy scales while preserving successful predictions on larger scales. Due to
previous failures of the simple MOND cosmological model, here we test a
speculative model where the modified gravitational field is produced only by
the baryons and the sterile neutrinos produce a purely Newtonian field (hence
Modified Baryonic Dynamics). We use two component cosmological simulations to
separate the baryonic N-body particles from the sterile neutrino ones. The
premise is to attenuate the over-production of massive galaxy cluster halos
which were prevalent in the original MOND plus light sterile neutrinos
scenario. Theoretical issues with such a formulation notwithstanding, the
Modified Baryonic Dynamics model fails to produce the correct amplitude for the
galaxy cluster mass function for any reasonable value of the primordial power

Importance of tropospheric volcanic aerosol for indirect radiative forcing of climate
Observations and models have shown that continuously degassing volcanoes have a potentially large effect on the natural background aerosol loading and the radiative state of the atmosphere. We use a global aerosol microphysics model to quantify the impact of these volcanic emissions on the cloud albedo radiative forcing under pre-industrial (PI) and present-day (PD) conditions. We find that volcanic degassing increases global annual mean cloud droplet number concentrations by 40% under PI conditions, but by only 10% under PD conditions. Consequently, volcanic degassing causes a global annual mean cloud albedo effect of −1.06 W m−2 in the PI era but only −0.56 W m−2 in the PD era. This non-equal effect is explained partly by the lower background aerosol concentrations in the PI era, but also because more aerosol particles are produced per unit of volcanic sulphur emission in the PI atmosphere. The higher sensitivity of the PI atmosphere to volcanic emissions has an important consequence for the anthropogenic cloud radiative forcing because the large uncertainty in volcanic emissions translates into an uncertainty in the PI baseline cloud radiative state. Assuming a −50/+100% uncertainty range in the volcanic sulphur flux, we estimate the annual mean anthropogenic cloud albedo forcing to lie between −1.16 W m−2 and −0.86 W m−2. Therefore, the volcanically induced uncertainty in the PI baseline cloud radiative state substantially adds to the already large uncertainty in the magnitude of the indirect radiative forcing of climate

Connectionist Temporal Modeling for Weakly Supervised Action Labeling
We propose a weakly-supervised framework for action labeling in video, where
only the order of occurring actions is required during training time. The key
challenge is that the per-frame alignments between the input (video) and label
(action) sequences are unknown during training. We address this by introducing
the Extended Connectionist Temporal Classification (ECTC) framework to
efficiently evaluate all possible alignments via dynamic programming and
explicitly enforce their consistency with frame-to-frame visual similarities.
This protects the model from distractions of visually inconsistent or
degenerated alignments without the need of temporal supervision. We further
extend our framework to the semi-supervised case when a few frames are sparsely
annotated in a video. With less than 1% of labeled frames per video, our method
is able to outperform existing semi-supervised approaches and achieve
comparable performance to that of fully supervised approaches.Comment: To appear in ECCV 201
Long-term visual and microperimetry outcomes following autologous retinal pigment epithelium choroid graft for neovascular age-related macular degeneration
To describe the 2- to 4-year visual and microperimetry outcomes of autologous retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)-choroid graft in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD).In this retrospective cohort study, 12 patients with subfoveal neovascular AMD who had undergone autologous RPE-choroid graft between August 2004 and June 2005 were reviewed. Change in visual acuity (VA), contrast sensitivity (CS), fixation stability and retinal sensitivity on microperimetry after 2-3 years and the rates of late postoperative complications were examined.Patients were followed for 26-48 months (mean, 39). Median preoperative VA (logMAR) was 0.87 but declined to 1.43 (1 year), 1.46 (2 years) and 1.38 (3 years), P = 0.001. Median CS (logCS) was 0.75 preoperatively but declined to 0.45 at 2 years. Six patients had serial microperimetry. Fixation stability declined in 1 but improved in 2 patients. All 6 had decline in retinal sensitivity over the graft during follow up. Retinal detachment did not occur after 12 months but 8 developed epiretinal membrane, 12 had cystic retinal change over the graft and 4 developed recurrent choroidal neovascularization. However, 10 grafts retained autofluorescence signal at 18-48 months of follow up.Autologous RPE-choroid graft can maintain VA, stable fixation and retinal sensitivity in some patients for over 3 years. The spatial correlation between graft autofluorescence, outer retinal structures on optical coherence tomography and retinal sensitivity are consistent with photoreceptor cell rescue. However, we caution the use of this technique as there is high complication rate and delayed loss of retinal function

An empirical study of gender differences in online gambling [forthcoming]
Gambling has typically been considered a predominately male activity. However, recent prevalence surveys have shown greater numbers of females are now gambling. Much of the
gambling literature suggests online gamblers are more likely to be male, and that problem gamblers are more likely to be male. Males and females are also likely to be gambling for different reasons and have a preference for different gambling activities. Little is known about the pattern of play among female online gamblers. The aim of this survey was to develop a better profile of female online gamblers and to examine any gender differences
between males and females in terms of how and why they gamble online, their frequency of online gambling, patterns of play, as well as attitudes to online gambling. The survey was posted on 32 international online gambling websites and was completed by 975 online gamblers (including 175 female online gamblers). Chi-square tests of association were conducted to examine the association between gender and a range of variables. The results
showed that females had been gambling online for a shorter duration of time than males, had much shorter online gambling sessions, different motivations for gambling online (i.e. to practice for free, to spend less money and out of boredom), and experienced online gambling
differently to males, with increased feelings of guilt and shame for gambling online. This suggests there is still a stigma around gambling particularly evident among females in this study. The findings indicate that clinicians and treatment providers need to be aware of these potential gender differences in online gambling to develop appropriately tailored interventions
Discrete dipole approximation for the study of radiation dynamics in a magnetodielectric environment
We develop a general computational approach, based on the discrete dipole approximation, for the study of radiation dynamics near or inside an object with arbitrary linear dielectric permittivity, and magnetic permeability tensors. Our method can account for dispersion and losses and provides insight on the role of local-field corrections in discrete magnetodielectric structures. We illustrate our method in the case of a source inside a magneto-dielectric, isotropic sphere for which the spontaneous emission rate of a source can be computed analytically. We show that our approach is in excellent agreement with the exact result, providing an approach capable of handling both the electric and magnetic response of advanced metamaterials. © 2010 Optical Society of America
