    Mock Catalogs for UHECR Studies

    We provide realistic mock-catalogs of cosmic rays above 40 EeV, for a pure proton composition, assuming their sources are a random subset of ordinary galaxies in a simulated, volume-limited survey, for various choices of source density: 10^-3.5 Mpc^-3, 10^-4.0 Mpc^-3 and 10^-4.5 Mpc^-3. The spectrum at the source is taken to be E^-2.3 and the effects of cosmological redshifting as well as photo-pion and e^+ e^- energy losses are included.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Cost-utility of transcatheter aortic valve implantation for inoperable patients with severe aortic stenosis treated by medical management: a UK cost-utility analysis based on patient-level data from the ADVANCE study.

    OBJECTIVE: To use patient-level data from the ADVANCE study to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) compared to medical management (MM) in patients with severe aortic stenosis from the perspective of the UK NHS. METHODS: A published decision-analytic model was adapted to include information on TAVI from the ADVANCE study. Patient-level data informed the choice as well as the form of mathematical functions that were used to model all-cause mortality, health-related quality of life and hospitalisations. TAVI-related resource use protocols were based on the ADVANCE study. MM was modelled on publicly available information from the PARTNER-B study. The outcome measures were incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) estimated at a range of time horizons with benefits expressed as quality-adjusted life-years (QALY). Extensive sensitivity/subgroup analyses were undertaken to explore the impact of uncertainty in key clinical areas. RESULTS: Using a 5-year time horizon, the ICER for the comparison of all ADVANCE to all PARTNER-B patients was £13 943 per QALY gained. For the subset of ADVANCE patients classified as high risk (Logistic EuroSCORE >20%) the ICER was £17 718 per QALY gained). The ICER was below £30 000 per QALY gained in all sensitivity analyses relating to choice of MM data source and alternative modelling approaches for key parameters. When the time horizon was extended to 10 years, all ICERs generated in all analyses were below £20 000 per QALY gained. CONCLUSION: TAVI is highly likely to be a cost-effective treatment for patients with severe aortic stenosis

    In this paper we prove some Harnack inequality for fully non linear degenerate elliptic equations, in the two dimensional case, extending the results of Davila Felmer and Quaas in the singular case but in all dimensions.     Experimental evaluation of environmental effects on a polymer-coated aluminium structure: a time-series analysis and pattern recognition approach

    Temperature variation is an important issue that needs to be considered when trying to develop a reliable Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) strategy. In the case that a data-based approach is chosen for damage detection, environmental fluctuations could be erroneously regarded as an abnormal condition of the structure and could mask the presence of damage. One of the objectives of the current work is to examine a statistical pattern recognition approach for novelty detection under different temperature conditions. A second important issue that could hinder the reliability of a SHM strategy is any kind of nonlinear behaviour, not associated with damage, in a system. For the purposes of this paper, the dynamic behaviour of a polymer-coated aluminium structure with ribs fixed with bolts is examined. The autoregressive parameters are the damage sensitive features and later, it is performed Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for robust novelty detection that takes into account the temperature variation

    Collimator design for a clinical brain SPECT/MRI insert

    This project's goal is to design a SPECT insert for a clinical MRI system for simultaneous brain SPECT/MR imaging. We assume the stationary SPECT insert will consist of two rings of ∼5x5-cm SiPM-based detectors insensitive to magnetic fields, with 0.8-mm intrinsic resolution. The maximum diameter is 44.5 cm, the minimum diameter is 33 cm to accommodate the patient and MRI receive/transmit coil, and the FOV has a 20 cm diameter. We have compared eight collimator designs: single-, 2x2-, 3x3- and 5+2½- pinhole, and single-, 2-, 3- and 1+2½-slit slit-slat, where ½-pinholes/slits are shared between two detectors. Analytical geometric efficiency was calculated for an activity distribution corresponding to a human brain and a target resolution of 10 mm FWHM at the centre of the FOV. Noise-free data were simulated with and without depth-of-interaction (DOI) information, and reconstructed for uniform, Defrise, Derenzo, and Zubal brain phantoms. For DOI it is assumed that the crystal's first and second half can be differentiated. Comparing the multi-pinhole and multi-slit slit-slat collimators, the former gives better reconstructed uniformity and trans-axial resolution, while the latter gives better axial resolution. Although the 2x2-pinhole and 2-slit designs give the highest sensitivities, they result in a sub-optimal utilization of the detector FOV. The best options are therefore the 5+2½-pinhole and the 1+2½-slit systems, with sensitivities of 4.9*10–4 and 4.0*10–4, respectively. The brain phantom reconstructions with multi-pinhole collimator are superior as compared to slit-slat, especially in terms of symmetry and realistic activity distribution. DOI information reduces artefacts and improves uniformity in geometric phantoms, although the difference is small for the brain phantom. These results favour a multi-pinhole configuration

    La vulnérabilité croissante des ressources en eau et des milieux aquatiques aux pollutions a conduit au développement de dispositifs agri-environnementaux chargés en particulier de réduire et d’encadrer l’utilisation des pesticides (le plus récent étant le plan Ecophyto 2018 issu du Grenelle de l’environnement). Cette contribution analyse la tension entre les contraintes agricoles qui conditionnent les changements de pratiques phytosanitaires et les exigences environnementales désormais posées en termes d’obtention de résultats. L’observation d’un dispositif expérimental de diffusion de " pratiques améliorées " de traitement phytosanitaire, inscrit dans le Groupe d’action phytosanitaire de Midi-Pyrénées (Gramip), est mobilisée pour interroger, à partir d’une approche interdisciplinaire (économie, sociologie, agronomie), la permanence de logiques agricoles technico-économiques et l’émergence d’arguments sanitaires et commerciaux comme facteurs potentiels de diffusion de pratiques alternatives à l’utilisation des pesticides en agriculture. / The increasing vulnerability of water resources and aquatic pollution has led to the development of agrienvironmental tools in particular to reduce and control the use of pesticides. This paper explores the tension between the constraints that affect changes of phytosanitary practices and environmental requirements now posed in terms of environmental results. The observation of an experimental policy instrument of "better practices" in Midi-Pyrenees (Gramip), is mobilized to examine, from an interdisciplinary approach (economics, sociology, agronomy), the permanence of agricultural techno-economic logic and the emergence of health and commercial factors as potential diffusion of alternative practices to the use of pesticides in agriculture

    Towards "green" smart materials for force and strain sensors: The case of polyaniline

    Stress/strain sensors constitute a class of devices with a global ever-growing market thanks to their use in many fields of modern life. They are typically constituted by thin metal foils deposited on flexible supports. However, the low inherent resistivity and limited flexibility of their constituents make them inadequate for several applications, such as measuring large movements in robotic systems and biological tissues.     Broadband distortion modeling in Lyman-α\alpha forest BAO fitting

    In recent years, the Lyman-α\alpha absorption observed in the spectra of high-redshift quasars has been used as a tracer of large-scale structure by means of the three-dimensional Lyman-α\alpha forest auto-correlation function at redshift z2.3z\simeq 2.3, but the need to fit the quasar continuum in every absorption spectrum introduces a broadband distortion that is difficult to correct and causes a systematic error for measuring any broadband properties. We describe a kk-space model for this broadband distortion based on a multiplicative correction to the power spectrum of the transmitted flux fraction that suppresses power on scales corresponding to the typical length of a Lyman-α\alpha forest spectrum. Implementing the distortion model in fits for the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak position in the Lyman-α\alpha forest auto-correlation, we find that the fitting method recovers the input values of the linear bias parameter bFb_{F} and the redshift-space distortion parameter βF\beta_{F} for mock data sets with a systematic error of less than 0.5\%. Applied to the auto-correlation measured for BOSS Data Release 11, our method improves on the previous treatment of broadband distortions in BAO fitting by providing a better fit to the data using fewer parameters and reducing the statistical errors on βF\beta_{F} and the combination bF(1+βF)b_{F}(1+\beta_{F}) by more than a factor of seven. The measured values at redshift z=2.3z=2.3 are $\beta_{F}=1.39^{+0.11\ +0.24\ +0.38}_{-0.10\ -0.19\ -0.28}and and b_{F}(1+\beta_{F})=-0.374^{+0.007\ +0.013\ +0.020}_{-0.007\ -0.014\ -0.022}(1 (1\sigma,2, 2\sigmaand3 and 3\sigma$ statistical errors).     Development and characterisation of pressed packaging solutions for high-temperature high-reliability SiC power modules

    SiC is a wide bandgap semiconductor with better electrothermal properties than silicon, including higher temperature of operation, higher breakdown voltage, lower losses and the ability to switch at higher frequencies. However, the power cycling performance of SiC devices in traditional silicon packaging systems is in need of further investigation since initial studies have shown reduced reliability. These traditional packaging systems have been developed for silicon, a semiconductor with different electrothermal and thermomechanical properties from SiC, hence the stresses on the different components of the package will change. Pressure packages, a packaging alternative where the weak elements of the traditional systems like wirebonds are removed, have demonstrated enhanced reliability for silicon devices however, there has not been much investigation on the performance of SiC devices in press-pack assemblies. This will be important for high power applications where reliability is critical. In this paper, SiC Schottky diodes in pressure packages have been evaluated, including the electrothermal characterisation for different clamping forces and contact materials, the thermal impedance evaluation and initial thermal cycling studies, focusing on the use of aluminium graphite as contact material

    TeV Particle Astrophysics II: Summary comments

    A unifying theme of this conference was the use of different approaches to understand astrophysical sources of energetic particles in the TeV range and above.
