    Working career progress in the tourism industry: Temp-to-perm transitions in Spain

    In this article, we analyze the dynamics of temporary workers’ transitions into permanent contracts for workers related to the tourism industry. For this purpose, we use an administrative retrospective dataset from Spanish Social security records. Results show that while individuals with a weaker attachment to the tourism industry achieve open-ended contracts sooner than in most other industries, on the contrary, it takes more time to those with a greater attachment to the tourism industry to exit from the temporary status. In addition, we find that for workers substantially engaged in the tourism industry, it takes more time to reach an open-ended contract when they have held between six and ten contracts in the past (as opposed to holding only one previous contract). On the contrary, for individuals with a weaker attachment to the tourism industry, holding between two and ten previous contracts implies a quicker exit from temporality.Temporary employment, Temporality trap, Spanish tourism industry

    JOB MATCHING QUALITY EFFECTS OF EMPLOYMENT PROMOTION MEASURES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

    In this article, we evaluate the influence that employment promotion measures designed for disabled people have on the latter’s job matching quality through the use of matching analysis. We focus on two aspects of quality: the type of contract held (either permanent or temporary) and whether or not the individual is searching for another job. We find that employment promotion measures do not improve the match’s job quality. Furthermore, the use of specialized labour market intermediation services by disabled individuals does not affect their job matching quality. As an additional contribution, our definition of disability eludes the self-justification bias.

    We analyse whether family-related quits present long-term effects upon women’s careers, which are summarized in three measures of occupational prestige. There is an association between intermittent attachment to the labour market and being engaged in occupations with lower prestige levels. In causal terms, we find that women choose jobs with lower occupational prestige anticipating future family-related quits.     Masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah masyarakat Cirangrang kurang terkontrol dalam membelanjakan uangnya sehingga timbul perilaku konsumtif yang berlebihan. Gaya hidup konsumtif terlihat pada kebiasaan mereka yang selalu berbelanja dengan jumlah yang banyak, harga yang cukup mahal dan berbelanja di mall. Baik menengah ke atas, menengah dan menengah ke bawah atau pendapatan tinggi dan rendah memiliki gaya hidup konsumtif. ditambah dengan banyaknya media-media yang menawarkan berbagai macam produk menarik. Faktor gengsi dan ingin berusaha mengikuti trend yang sedang beredar menjadi alasan masyarakat memiliki perilaku konsumtif. Pentingnya penulis melakukan penelitian ini adalah bertujuan untuk mengetahui pola perilaku konsumtif masyarakat Cirangrang dan untuk mengetahui factor-faktor penyebab masyarakat Cirangrang berperilaku konsumtif. Teori yang digunakan dalam analisis data penelitian ini adalah teori Jean Baudrillard tentang masyarakat konsumsi. Dalam masyarakat konsumsi jika masyarakat memiliki uang maka mereka bebas mengkonsumsi apa yang mereka inginkan. Namun dalam hal ini mereka bebas untuk mengkonsumsi hanya semata-mata pada objek dan tanda yang berbeda-beda. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif dengan jenis data primer data yang diperoleh langsung dari objek penelitian. Data yang dikumpulkan dalam penelitian ini merupakan data primer dan data sekunder dengan menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data: Observasi dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian ini adalah masyarakat yang memiliki perilaku konsumtif dapat dilihat beberapa kriteria diantaranya, Frekuensi belanja : setiap weekend, satu bulan sekali atau ketika memiliki uang. Kemudian kriteria dalam memilih barang pada dasarnya memilih yang bermerk, dan dan tidak bermerk namun memilih modelnya yang menarik. Lokasi belanja yang dikunjungi masyarakat Cirangrang biasanya adalah mall, distro, butik dan outlate. Biaya yang dikeluarkan untuk berbelanja cukup besar yaitu berkisar Rp 150.000- Rp.1.000.000. Faktor-faktor penyebab masyarakat Cirangrang berperilaku konsumtif adalah ingin menjaga gengsi, menarik perhatian orang lain, mengikuti Trend yang ada, dan banyaknya diskon menarik

    Mitochondrial dysfunction and mitophagy activation in blood mononuclear cells of fibromyalgia patients: implications in the pathogenesis of the disease

Recent studies have shown some evidence demonstrating that oxidative stress may have a role in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia. However, it is still not clear whether oxidative stress is the cause or the effect of the abnormalities documented in fibromyalgia. Furthermore, the role of mitochondria in the redox imbalance reported in fibromyalgia also is controversial. We undertook this study to investigate the role of mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and mitophagy in fibromyalgia. [Methods]: We studied 20 patients (2 male, 18 female patients) from the database of the Sevillian Fibromyalgia Association and 10 healthy controls. We evaluated mitochondrial function in blood mononuclear cells from fibromyalgia patients measuring, coenzyme Q10 levels with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and mitochondrial membrane potential with flow cytometry. Oxidative stress was determined by measuring mitochondrial superoxide production with MitoSOXℱ and lipid peroxidation in blood mononuclear cells and plasma from fibromyalgia patients. Autophagy activation was evaluated by quantifying the fluorescence intensity of LysoTrackerℱ Red staining of blood mononuclear cells. Mitophagy was confirmed by measuring citrate synthase activity and electron microscopy examination of blood mononuclear cells. [Results]: We found reduced levels of coenzyme Q10, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, increased levels of mitochondrial superoxide in blood mononuclear cells, and increased levels of lipid peroxidation in both blood mononuclear cells and plasma from fibromyalgia patients. Mitochondrial dysfunction was also associated with increased expression of autophagic genes and the elimination of dysfunctional mitochondria with mitophagy.     Autophagy in periodontitis patients and gingival fibroblasts: unraveling the link between chronic diseases and inflammation

Autophagy provides a mechanism for the turnover of cellular organelles and proteins through a lysosome-dependent degradation pathway. The aim of this research was to study the role of autophagy in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with periodontitis and gingival fibroblasts treated with a lipopolysaccharide of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Autophagy-dependent mechanisms have been proposed in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disorders and in other diseases related to periodontitis, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Thus it is important to study the role of autophagy in the pathophysiology of periodontitis. Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with periodontitis (n = 38) and without periodontitis (n = 20) were used to study autophagy. To investigate the mechanism of autophagy, we evaluated the influence of a lipopolysaccharide from P. gingivalis in human gingival fibroblasts, and autophagy was monitored morphologically and biochemically. Autophagosomes were observed by immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. Results: We found increased levels of autophagy gene expression and high levels of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with periodontitis compared with controls. A significantly positive correlation between both was observed. In human gingival fibroblasts treated with lipopolysaccharide from P. gingivalis, there was an increase of protein and transcript of autophagy-related protein 12 (ATG12) and microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 alpha LC3. A reduction of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species induced a decrease in autophagy whereas inhibition of autophagy in infected cells increased apoptosis, showing the protective role of autophagy.     Diets based on virgin olive oil or fish oil but not on sunflower oil prevent age-related alvolar bone resorption by mitochondrial-related mechanisms

    Background/Objectives: Aging enhances frequency of chronic diseases like cardiovascular diseases or periodontitis. Here we reproduced an age-dependent model of the periodontium, a fully physiological approach to periodontal conditions, to evaluate the impact of dietary fat type on gingival tissue of young (6 months old) and old (24 months old) rats.Methods/Findings: Animals were fed life-long on diets based on monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) as virgin olive oil, n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-6PUFA), as sunflower oil, or n-3PUFA, as fish oil. Age-related alveolar bone loss was higher in n-6PUFA fed rats, probably as a consequence of the ablation of the cell capacity to adapt to aging. Gene expression analysis suggests that MUFA or n-3PUFA allowed mitochondria to maintain an adequate turnover through induction of biogenesis, autophagy and the antioxidant systems, and avoiding mitochondrial electron transport system alterations.Conclusions: The main finding is that the enhanced alveolar bone loss associated to age may be targeted by an appropriate dietary treatment. The mechanisms involved in this phenomenon are related with an ablation of the cell capacity to adapt to aging. Thus, MUFA or n-3PUFA might allow mitochondrial maintaining turnover through biogenesis or autophagy. They might also be able to induce the corresponding antioxidant systems to counteract age-related oxidative stress, and do not inhibit mitochondrial electron transport chain. From the nutritional and clinical point of view, it is noteworthy that the potential treatments to attenuate alveolar bone loss (a feature of periodontal disease) associated to age could be similar to some of the proposed for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, a group of pathologies recently associated with age-related periodontitis.This study was supported by I+D grants from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (AGL2008-01057) and the Autonomous Government of Andalusia (AGR832)

    The impact of digital start-up founders’ higher education on reaching equity investment milestones

    This paper builds on human capital theory to assess the importance of formal education among graduate entrepreneurs. Using a sample of 4.953 digital start-ups the paper evaluates the impact of start-up founding teams’ higher education on the probability of securing equity investment and subsequent exit for investors. The main findings are: (1), teams with a founder that has a technical education are less likely to remain self-financed and are more likely to secure equity investment and to exit, but the impact of technical education declines with higher level degrees, (2) teams with a founder that has doctoral level business education are less likely to remain self-financed and have a higher probability of securing equity investment, while undergraduate and postgraduate business education have no significant effect, and (3) teams with a founder that has an undergraduate general education (arts and humanities) are less likely to remain self-financed and are more likely to secure equity investment and exit while postgraduate and doctoral general education have no significant effect on securing equity investment and exit. The findings enhance our understanding of factors that influence digital start-ups achieving equity milestones by showing the heterogeneous influence of different types of higher education, and therefore human capital, on new ventures achieving equity milestones. The results suggest that researchers and policy-makers should extend their consideration of universities entrepreneurial activity to include the development of human capital

    Importance of heterogeneity in Porhyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide lipid A in tissue specific inflammatory signaling

    Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Porphyromonas gingivalis exists in at least two known forms, O-LPS and A-LPS. A-LPS shows heterogeneity in which two isoforms designated LPS1435/1449 and LPS1690 appear responsible for tissue specific immune signalingpathways activation and increased virulence. The modification of lipid A to tetra-acylated1435/1449 and/or penta-acylated1690 fatty acids indicates poor growth conditions and bioavailability of hemin. Hemin protects P. gingivalis from serum resistance and the lipid A serves as a site for its binding. The LPS1435/1449 and LPS1690 isoforms can produce opposite effects on the human Toll-like receptors (TLR) TLR 2 and TLR 4 activation. This enabless P. gingivalis to select the conditions for its entry, survival and that of its co-habiting species in the host, orchestrating its virulence to control innate immune pathway activation and biofilm dysbiosis. Thismini review describes a number of effects that LPS1435/1449 and LPS1690 can exert on the host tissues such as deregulation of the innate immune system, subversion of host cell autophagy, regulation of outer membrane vesicle production and adverse effects on pregnancy outcome. The ability to change its LPS1435/1449 and/or LPS1690 composition may enables P. gingivalis to paralyze local pro-inflammatory cytokine production, thereby gaining access to its primary location in periodontal tissue
