    Residuos agroindustriales como fuente de nutrientes y compuestos fenólicos

    El presente trabajo describe los nutrientes y compuestos fenólicos contenidos en diversos residuos agroindustriales (RAI). Los RAI pueden derivar en problemas que comprometen la alimentación y salud de las poblaciones más vulnerables si no son aprovechados adecuadamente. Por ello  es importante crear alternativas que contribuyan a contrarrestar el problema, desde la producción de alimentos hasta la mesa del consumidor. Los RAI de frutas, verduras, cereales y oleaginosas contienen nutrientes y compuestos fenólicos que pueden ser benéficos a la salud debido a sus efectos antioxidantes, antiinflamatorios, antidiabéticos, entre otros. Los RAI podrían también ser aplicados en el desarrollo de alimentos, debido a sus características tecnofuncionales como la capacidad de actuar como agentes gelificantes, emulsificantes, estabilizantes y espesantes. De acuerdo con lo anterior, el empleo de RAI para un segundo uso es prometedor, sin embargo, aún quedan algunos retos por resolver, tales como el escalamiento y la optimización de su extracción

    Rapid, metal-free and aqueous synthesis of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine under ambient conditions

    A novel, rapid and efficient route to imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines under ambient, aqueous and metal-free conditions is reported. The NaOH-promoted cycloisomerisations of N-propargylpyridiniums give quantitative yield in a few minutes (10 g scale). A comparison of common green metrics to current routes showed clear improvements, with at least a one order of magnitude increase in space-time-yield

    The development of cross-cultural recognition of vocal emotion during childhood and adolescence

    Humans have an innate set of emotions recognised universally. However, emotion recognition also depends on socio-cultural rules. Although adults recognise vocal emotions universally, they identify emotions more accurately in their native language. We examined developmental trajectories of universal vocal emotion recognition in children. Eighty native English speakers completed a vocal emotion recognition task in their native language (English) and foreign languages (Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic) expressing anger, happiness, sadness, fear, and neutrality. Emotion recognition was compared across 8-to-10, 11-to-13-year-olds, and adults. Measures of behavioural and emotional problems were also taken. Results showed that although emotion recognition was above chance for all languages, native English speaking children were more accurate in recognising vocal emotions in their native language. There was a larger improvement in recognising vocal emotion from the native language during adolescence. Vocal anger recognition did not improve with age for the non-native languages. This is the first study to demonstrate universality of vocal emotion recognition in children whilst supporting an “in-group advantage” for more accurate recognition in the native language. Findings highlight the role of experience in emotion recognition, have implications for child development in modern multicultural societies and address important theoretical questions about the nature of emotions

    Not AvailableWatershed development programmes carried out in different agroclimatic conditions in India resulted in beneficial impact in terms of productivity enhancement and natural resources conservation, but less attention paid to institutional and participatory aspects. This paper explored the performance of various institutions regarding execution of watershed development programmes in semi-arid region of India. Recorded observations from documents maintained at watershed level and information collected through primary survey as well as focus group discussion with different types of stakeholders were used for analysis. The results indicated lacunae in participatory aspects during programme implementation process like monitoring activities, management of common property resources and equity. Gap in linkages and differential level of performance of various watershed level functionaries indicates the necessity for corrections in the structures and linkages pattern for sustainability of the infrastructure and institutions. The study also showed unequal priorities by the implementing agencies towards institutions, land and water resources development, production enhancement activities and fodder resources development as well as rationalities of technical, economic, financial, political and social aspects among the watersheds.Not Availabl

    Dural based primary osteosarcoma in right fronto-temporal region with review of literature

    We report a case of primary dural based osteosarcoma in the right fronto-temporal convexity in a 43-year-old female who presented with a short history of seizure and headache. Radiologic evaluation revealed a well defined brightly enhancing extra-axial lesion in the right fronto-temporal region with a dural tail around the sylvian fissure. The overlying bone was uninvolved. Paraffin section of the tumor showed plump cells with moderate nuclear and cellular pleomorphism with eosinophilic extracellular material (osteiod) between the cells. At a few places, lace like osteiod was seen encasing individual cells signifying osteiod being formed by tumor cells. Immunohistochemistry for EMA was focally positive and negative for S-100 protein and GFAP. A final histopathological diagnosis of dural based primary osteosarcoma of the right fronto-temporal region was rendered. To the best of our knowledge this will be the eighth such case in literature

    BACKGROUND: One of the major technological breakthroughs in the last decade is represented by the diversified medical applications of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LEDs emitting in the ultraviolet (UV) B spectrum might serve as a more convenient alternative for targeted delivery of phototherapy in inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the efficacy and safety of a new UVB-LED phototherapeutic device in chronic plaque-type psoriasis. METHODS: Twenty patients with stable plaque-type psoriasis were enrolled into a prospective, right-left comparative, open study. Symmetrical lesions located on extremities or trunk were chosen; one lesion was treated with the study device, whereas the other lesion served as an untreated control. Two treatment regimens were used in the study, one with an aggressive dose escalation similar to those used for outpatient treatment and one with slow increase in dose, similar to those used for treatment at home. RESULTS: Patients in both groups responded rapidly to the UVB-LED therapy. Early disease resolution was observed in 11 patients (seven in the first group and four in the second group). Overall improvement at end of therapy was 93% in the high-dose group and 84% in the low-dose group. Four patients from the high-dose group and five from the low-dose group were still in remission at the 6-month follow-up visit. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that this innovative UVB-LED device is effective in the treatment of localized psoriasis and may be useful in other UV-responsive skin diseases

    Protein characterization and nutrient composition of Hungarian proso millet varieties and the effect of decortication

    Six varieties of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) and two commercially available millets were investigated in the present study. In order to explore the nutritional potential, major nutrient composition, mineral composition, antioxidant capacity, total phenols content (related to the antioxidant capacity) and dietary fibre content were determined. The effects of decortication on these components were examined. In addition, protein profile of the varieties and amylose/amylopectin ratio of the starch were examined. The range of the values measured for major nutrient composition corresponds with data of other millet species published in earlier studies. Remarkable differences were found among the protein contents of the varieties (11.58–14.80%). Although the concentration of minerals was low in the varieties examined, in comparison with other cereals wholegrain millet seems to be nutritionally valuable because of their high dietary fibre content. Decortication had no effect on the protein and fat content of millets, however, it significantly decreased the content of crude fibre, dietary fibre, minerals, total phenols content and antioxidant capacity. Consequently the applicability of millets as functional food decreases. Decortication had no effect on the amylose/amylopectin ratio of millet. No varietal differences were found in terms of protein characteristics
