    Improving SMEs competitiveness with the use of Instagram Influencer Advertising and eWOM

    Under Saudi Vision 2030, there will be a forthcoming increase in support to small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the current 20 percent of GDP to 35 percent. Thus, SMEs’ access to finance will become easier. At the same time, the cosmetics retail industry is expected to rapidly grow in the next few years because of the already mounting demand and availability of cosmetics through online channels. The purpose of this study is to explore the use of beauty Instagram influencers in advertising as a tool to increase competitiveness for SMEs. An exploratory research design was employed, and in-depth interviews conducted to gain a better understanding of female Saudi young adults’ perceptions of trust towards Instagram influencers, electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM), and advertising. Implications for SMEs managers are also discussed

    Promising score for teaching and learning environment: an experience of a fledgling medical college in Saudi Arabia

    Background: Professional competency of graduates of an institute reflects its teaching and learning environment (TLE). This study aimed to provide a preliminary assessment of the TLE at the College of Medicine at Majmaah University. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during the 2019-20 academic year among students at the College. A validated scoring tool “the Experience of Teaching and Learning Questionnaire” (available at https://bit.ly/3sVBuEw) was used. The mean score of each section and statement, the difference between the mean scores of different demographic groups, and correlations between sections were analysed. Results: A total of 234 (72.2%) enrolled students participated in this survey, with a male-to-female ratio and a ratio of participants from basic to clinical years being 2:1 and 1:1, respectively. Most participants reported a GPA of above 3/5. The overall mean score was 3.52/5 points. Section one “approaches to learning and studying” has the highest mean score (3.68), and no section scored a mean below three, though section three “demands made by the course” scored a borderline mean of 3.08. Students in clinical years had a significantly higher overall mean score compared to their counterparts (3.66 vs. 3.39, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Students at the College had a positive perception of the TLE, but face challenges in coping with the demands of acquiring knowledge and subject-based skills, and in appreciating the TLE especially during basic science years, highlighting the need for an atmosphere that allows them to meet demands and develop greater appreciation

    The everchanging epidemiology of meningococcal disease worldwide and the potential for prevention through vaccination.

    Neisseria meningitidis is a major cause of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia worldwide and is associated with high case fatality rates and serious life-long complications among survivors. Twelve serogroups are recognised, of which six (A, B, C, W, X and Y) are responsible for nearly all cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD). The incidence of IMD and responsible serogroups vary widely both geographically and over time. For the first time, effective vaccines against all these serogroups are available or nearing licensure. Over the past two decades, IMD incidence has been declining across most parts of the world through a combination of successful meningococcal immunisation programmes and secular trends. The introduction of meningococcal C conjugate vaccines in the early 2000s was associated with rapid declines in meningococcal C disease, whilst implementation of a meningococcal A conjugate vaccine across the African meningitis belt led to near-elimination of meningococcal A disease. Consequently, other serogroups have become more important causes of IMD. In particular, the emergence of a hypervirulent meningococcal group W clone has led many countries to shift from monovalent meningococcal C to quadrivalent ACWY conjugate vaccines in their national immunisation programmes. Additionally, the recent licensure of two protein-based, broad-spectrum meningococcal B vaccines finally provides protection against the most common group responsible for childhood IMD across Europe and Australia. This review describes global IMD epidemiology across each continent and trends over time, the serogroups responsible for IMD, the impact of meningococcal immunisation programmes and future needs to eliminate this devastating disease

    Gender Roles in the Arab World: Development and Psychometric Properties of the Arab Adolescents Gender Roles Attitude Scale

    Scant research has been conducted on gender in the Arab world; one explanation is due to a lack of Arabic measures on gender-related issues. To advance scientific work on gender in the Arab world, we developed the Arab Adolescents Gender Roles Attitude Scale (AAGRAS), the first known reliable and valid Arabic measure of gender-role attitudes. To develop this measure, we conducted two studies based on data collected from 776 high school students 15–19 years-old from the state of Qatar. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis produced 12 items divided equally into two subscales. One subscale assesses traditional gender-role attitudes, whereas the other measures egalitarian gender-role attitudes. Our findings indicate that young men are more likely to resist gender equality than young women are. Moreover, those who hold traditional attitudes are more likely to disapprove of women occupying positions of authority. The AAGRAS is a useful assessment tool that policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and educators can use to study gender-role attitudes in the Arab world and to develop educational and intervention programs that encourage adolescents to identify, confront, and avoid prejudice and discrimination against women and ultimately adopt more egalitarian gender roles.This project was supported by a grant from the former Supreme Council for Family Affairs in the State of Qatar
