Green synthesis of nanoparticles: Pulsed Laser Ablation in Liquids
Laser ablation synthesis in liquid solution (PLAL) is a green technique that allows for the physical formation of ultrapure nanomaterials. In this work, Ag and Au nanoparticles are synthesized by PLAL using two different neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser systems. A pure silver/gold target (99.998% purity) was immersed in Milli-Q water and the sample surface of approximately 1 cm2 in size was continually scanned by a pulsed laser beam to achieve a homogenous ablation. Obtained suspensions were analyzed by ICP-OES, UV-Vis, TEM, and DLS. UV-Vis spectra showed characteristic peaks at 428 nm and 525 nm, which correlate with silver and gold nanoparticles' surface plasmon absorbance. ICP-OES analysis confirmed that these suspensions are free from impurities. Since no stabilizer is added, these nanoparticles tend to agglomerate in time, as TEM and DLS analysis confirmed (Figure 1). Nevertheless, these nanoparticles can be easily functionalized with a variety of ligands such as small molecules, surfactants, dendrimers, polymers, and biomolecules to get desirable functionalities for various applications
On the Introduction of Public Notary Service in Serbia
The article contains a short history of the notary service in Serbia and a review of selected issues from the newly adopted Law on the Public Notary Service of the Republic of Serbia of 2011, mainly regulating the competences of the future public notaries. Also, the article presents in detail the plan of activities for the introduction and re-introduction of the notary service in Serbia, including the issues of the notary exam, initial appointment of the first one hundred notaries and the timing of adoption of the necessary byelaws required for the establishment of the notary servic
Studenica : The Funerary Church of the Dynastic Founder - The Cornerstone of Church and State Independence
The paper discusses the significance of the Studenica monastery as the most important endowment of the Grand Župan Stefan Nemanja in Serbia. Several aspects of Studenica are analised: its function as the mausoleum of the ruler, the status of an autonomous monastery, as well as the peculiarities of the architecture of wall painting, realized in a unique symbiosis of Romanesque and Byzantine art.Published on the occasion of the 23rd international congress of Byzantine studie

The dissertation presents a monographic study of the wall paintings of the oldest part
of the Church of the Mother of God in Studenica monastery. Murals in question are preserved on
two different layers of frescoes. The first was executed 1208/1209, under the patronage of the
Grand Župan Stefan, and under the supervision of his brother, the archimandrite of Studenica,
Sava. Second layer of frescoes was created in 1568, within the large renovation of the church
monuments in the area of the renewed Patriarchate of Peć. The production of these frescoes was
financed by heigoumenos of Studenica, Simeon.
In accordance with the conventional structure of monographic studies, the dissertation
begins with a resume of the previous research of the wall paintings of the Church of the Mother
of God. Next chapter is devoted to the historical circumstances and chronology of the
establishment of the monastery and its wall paintings.
Attention is, then, focused on the main topic of our work: research of thematic program
and iconographic and stylistic features of the wall paintings of the Church of the Mother of God.
Although two layers of frescoes are chronologically separated for more than three and a half
centuries, they can be largely considered unified. Such an approach is based on the fact that the
original iconographic programme was largely respected in the 16th century. The iconogrphic
repertoire of the Church of the Virgin Mary was presented systematically, in accordance with the
hierarchy within the sacral topography of the temple (dome and pandantives, altar, naos,
vestibules, narthex). Equal attention is paid to its typical features, seen in the context of the
development of the painted programs of Byzantine churches, as well as to some of its special
features, arising from the specific requests of the ktetor and archimandrite Sava (selection and
arrangement of individual saints, the ktetorial composition, etc.). In the chapter devoted to the
iconography of the oldest frescoes Studenica, specific features of the Gospel scenes
(Annunciation, Crucifixion) and numerous individual figures are considered. A particularly significant aspect of the oldest frescoes of Studenica are their stylistic
features. Bearing in mind the time of their creation (that is, the time after the Fourth Crusade), as
well as their high aquality, the artistic features of the original wall paintings of the Church of the
Virgin have a great significance for studying the new stylistic expression of Byzantine painting
of the 13th century, summarized in the term "monumental style". With the awareness of such
importance of frescoes, their stylistic features were examined in the broad perspective of
Byzantine painting from the end of the 12th and the first decades of the 13th century. In the end,
a special effort was made to consider the relationship of the painters from 1568, and their
advisers, with the original iconographic program. In a separate chapter, changes made within the
original thematic repertoire were considered. The attention is focues on the figure of saints who
could not be shown on the oldest frescoes, as well as on the changes in the iconography of the
original scenes (Great Feasts, Passion Cycle, Last Judgement etc)
The Serbian Alexander romance and the Byzantine redactions of the Alexander romance (α and ε versions)
The dissertation interprets the connections of the Serbian Alexandеr Romance with the late antique α redaction (III century AD) and thе ε variant (VII–VIII centuries) of the Alexander Romance. Its first part includes an textual-comparative analysis, an overview of the history of the redactions of the Alexander Romance and of the varied genres included in the composition of the book over the centuries, a brief methodological introduction and a compositional comparison of the structural material of the three interpreted redactions of the Life of Alexander. The second part begins with an interpretation of the work's chronotope, its rich literary map divided by the East-West axis. Then the thesis shifts to the onomastic, as well as stylistic and poetic features of the work, using them to date the serboslavonic Alexander Romance and link it to the Tale of Troy. The following section touches the complex religious image of the work and the characteristics of its “feudalism”. The concluding part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of the genre of the Serbian Alexandride and considerations of ambivalence as an important feature of the work. In the second half of the dissertation, the writings of Byzantine literature were also included in the comparative framework when necessary due to the nature of the problem: the Epic of Digenes Akritas and Palaiologan chivalric novels – Velthandros and Chrysandza, Kallimachos and Chrysorroi, Livistros and Rhodamni and the Byzantine Achilleid. Different interpretative methods were applied: comparative analysis, hermeneutic-poetic approach to medieval literature, Alexei Lidov's theory of hierotopy, stylistic criticism, deconstruction, and contemporary cultural theories. The research is based on the critical edition of the Serbian Alexander Romance by Radmila Marinković and Vera Jerković
Depictions of St. Mark of Ephesus in Post-Byzantine Art
The paper discusses the visual representations of St. Mark of Ephesus, under-researched in previous scholarship, which have survived in several monuments of post-Byzantine wall painting in the Balkans. These depictions are analyzed as visual testimonies of the veneration of Mark of Ephesus in the period under consideration, i.e. as important indicators of the presence, continuity and dissemination of his cult a long time before his official canonization in the 18th century. The paper also offers an overview of the different iconographic versions of the images of St. Mark of Ephesus. Finally, it examines the possible reasons for the emergence of images representing this famed anti-Unionist metropolitan in the discussed monuments. In this context, the images of Mark of Ephesus are considered through the prism of their placement in a given iconographic program; wherever possible, the role of the ktetor and artist in their creation is examined.
Serbia: Strict Laws, Liberal Practice
The issue of cross-border acquisition of agricultural land is regulated in an inconsistent manner in
Serbian law: on the one hand, constitutional provisions are very liberal and impose minimal restrictions
to the ownership acquisition of such land by foreign nationals; on the other hand, statutory provisions
are extremely restrictive and seem to exclude not only acquisition of ownership of agricultural land by
foreign nationals but also the very capacity of non-Serbian nationals to own agricultural land. Given that
the Stabilization and Association Agreement between Serbia and EU and its member states, which came
into force in 2013, foresaw a 4-year deadline for Serbia to equalize the legal position of EU member states
nationals with Serbian nationals in respect of the conditions for the acquisition of ownership of agricul-
tural land, the statutory provisions were altered in 2017. However, these amendments not only failed
in the abovementioned objective, but they contained such complex conditions for EU member state
nationals to acquire agricultural land in Serbia that it made it impossible at least until 2027 and practi-
cally impossible even after that year. This is confirmed when the existing conditions are analyzed from
the point of view of the 2017 Commission Interpretative Communication on the Acquisition of Farmland
and EU law. This Communication analyzed the restrictions imposed by EU countries to the acquisition
of agricultural land by both domestic and EU member state nationals from the point of view of EU law.
Many of the conditions that exist in Serbia only for EU member states nationals would not adhere to
EU law even if they applied to Serbian and EU member states nationals equally. This is reflected in the
recent annual reports of the European Commission on the state of relations between Serbia and the EU,
where it is noted that the obligation to equalize the position of domestic and EU member state nationals
in respect of the acquisition of agricultural land contained in the SAA is not fulfilled. All this is in sharp
contrast with the fact that, in practice, foreign nationals may acquire the ownership of agricultural land
in Serbia indirectly, by establishing a legal entity in Serbia, or even directly, if such right is provided in
an international treaty. Such inconsistent regulation and commercial practice are highly likely to cause
further friction and political debate in Serbia in the coming years
The paper considers the characters from the Hagiography of Barlaam and Josaphat as possible models for the formation of the heroes of Theodosius Hagiography of Saint Sava. The characterization of Saint Simeon is at the center of the interpretation, and the ways in which it is performed in medieval Serbian literature is considered. The characters of Saint Simeon and Emperor Avenir are compared and similarities are considered. The significance of the function of the conflict between father and son in the structure of interpreted works is emphasized. The characters of the sons, the prince Josaphat and Saint Sava are compared, and the interpretation highlights the scene of his encounter with the Russian monk. The question of the relation between faction and fiction, history and literature is theoretically problematized. There are examples of the negative imaging of the means of government, on which the foundation of the analyzed characterization model is based. The aim of the study is to initiate a reflection of the way the foundations of Serbian literature are derived through the use of already existing models in the Byzantine tradition.
