Gender Differences in Resilience in the Emerging Adulthood Population

    Get PDF
Risk factors and protective factors influence an individual\u27s resilience. For this study archival data collected from Rochester Institute of Technology college students were used. Specifically the participants\u27 responses on the 16PF- Adolescent Personality Questionnaire (APQ) Life Difficulties Scale (LDS) were analyzed. After reconfiguring the Life Difficulties Scale using the literature review to analyze the items, results indicated that specific items can be considered risk factors, whereas others can be considered protective factors. Results from this emerging adulthood population did not indicate gender differences in the risk and protective factors

    Comparing a Traditional and a Multi-Agent Load-Balancing System

This article presents a comparison between agent and non-agent based approaches to building network-load-balancing systems. In particular, two large software systems are compared, one traditional and the other agent-based, both performing the same load balancing functions. Due to the two different architectures, several differences emerge. The differences are analyzed theoretically and practically in terms of design, scalability and fault-tolerance. The advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are presented by combining an analysis of the system and gathering the experience of designers, developers and users. Traditionally, designers specify rigid software structure, while for multi-agent systems the emphasis is on specifying the different tasks and roles, as well as the interconnections between the agents that cooperate autonomously and simultaneously. The major advantages of the multi-agent approach are the introduced abstract design layers and, as a consequence, the more comprehendible top-level design, the increased redundancy, and the improved fault tolerance. The major improvement in performance due to the agent architecture is observed in the case of one or more failed computers. Although the agent-oriented design might not be a silver bullet for building large distributed systems, our analysis and application confirm that it does have a number of advantages over non-agent approaches

Analytical Estimation of Beamforming Speed-of-Sound Using Transmission Geometry

Most ultrasound imaging techniques necessitate the fundamental step of converting temporal signals received from transducer elements into a spatial echogenecity map. This beamforming (BF) step requires the knowledge of speed-of-sound (SoS) value in the imaged medium. An incorrect assumption of BF SoS leads to aberration artifacts, not only deteriorating the quality and resolution of conventional brightness mode (B-mode) images, hence limiting their clinical usability, but also impairing other ultrasound modalities such as elastography and spatial SoS reconstructions, which rely on faithfully beamformed images as their input. In this work, we propose an analytical method for estimating BF SoS. We show that pixel-wise relative shifts between frames beamformed with an assumed SoS is a function of geometric disparities of the transmission paths and the error in such SoS assumption. Using this relation, we devise an analytical model, the closed form solution of which yields the difference between the assumed and the true SoS in the medium. Based on this, we correct the BF SoS, which can also be applied iteratively. Both in simulations and experiments, lateral B-mode resolution is shown to be improved by \approx25% compared to that with an initial SoS assumption error of 3.3% (50 m/s), while localization artifacts from beamforming are also corrected. After 5 iterations, our method achieves BF SoS errors of under 0.6 m/s in simulations and under 1 m/s in experimental phantom data. Residual time-delay errors in beamforming 32 numerical phantoms are shown to reduce down to 0.07 μ\mus, with average improvements of up to 21 folds compared to initial inaccurate assumptions. We additionally show the utility of the proposed method in imaging local SoS maps, where using our correction method reduces reconstruction root-mean-square errors substantially, down to their lower-bound with actual BF SoS

One of the most common fractures in today's time is a hip fracture. The highest number of fractures occurring in the geriatric age range. Hip fractures are associated with chronic pain, reduced mobility, disability and increased dependence on another person. The development and installation of artificial joints and hips is one of the greatest achievements in medicine, and in the 20th century and in orthopedics. The most commonly replaced natural wrist in the world is the artificial hip joint. The incidence and prevalence of hip arthrosis with age, and by the surgical replacement of the degenerate wrist, meet certain basic human needs. Health care in the geriatric population with the implantation of an artificial hip must be based on an individual level with the basic aim of providing the widest possible access to basic human needs as well as the longer maintenance of autonomy

Viewing Film from a Communication Perspective: Film as Public Relations, Product Placement, and Rhetorical Advocacy in the College Classroom

Academics approach film from multiple perspectives, including critical, literary, rhetorical, and managerial approaches. Furthermore, and outside of film studies courses, films are frequently used as a pedagogical tool. Their relevance in society as well as their valuable use in the classroom makes them an important and pragmatic medium deserving further attention. The ability of film to be used in a socio-political way may sustain, challenge or change the status quo, which supports studying film as well as teaching students about the power of film. The purpose of this article is to share the development of a course which points out to students how film is used in society. Film theories are discussed, selected films are reviewed, and class assignments related to the theories and movies are summarized. In particular, this course explores films’ relationship to corporate agendas as well as to social justice. This approach to film crosses film studies with rhetoric and public relations connecting the course to other courses often taken by communication majors
