    Comparison of two digital intraoral radiography imaging systems as a function of contrast resolution and exposure time

    BACKGROUND To compare the image quality of two different digital imaging systems; one photostimulable phosphor plate system (PSP) and a direct digital radiography system with CMOS imaging sensor; via evaluating contrast resolution among four different exposure times. METHODS Endodontically treated incisor teeth embedded in paraffin blocks are aligned next to a 99.5% Al wedge and exposed for 0.8, 0.1,0.125 and 0.16 seconds using both the CMOS and PSP systems. Using ImageJ software, 5 isometric and isogridded ROI from each root filling area and isometric ROI from the Al stepwedge were calculated. RESULTS Evaluation of the total of 120 images displayed that PSP system produced significantly higher contrast resolution (P0.05). CONCLUSIONS The contrast resolution was higher using the PSP system. It can be estimated that, filling material will be more obvious under lower doses using PSP

    A Human Gut Commensal Ferments Cranberry Carbohydrates to Produce Formate

    Commensal bifidobacteria colonize the human gastrointestinal tract and catabolize glycans that are impervious to host digestion. Accordingly, Bifidobacterium longum typically secretes acetate and lactate as fermentative end products. This study tested the hypothesis that B. longum utilizes cranberry-derived xyloglucans in a strain-dependent manner. Interestingly, the B. longum strain that efficiently utilizes cranberry xyloglucans secretes 2.0 to 2.5 mol of acetate-lactate. The 1.5 acetate:lactate ratio theoretical yield obtained in hexose fermentations shifts during xyloglucan metabolism. Accordingly, this metabolic shift is characterized by increased acetate and formate production at the expense of lactate. α-L-Arabinofuranosidase, an arabinan endo-1,5-α-L-arabinosidase, and a β-xylosidase with a carbohydrate substrate-binding protein and carbohydrate ABC transporter membrane proteins are upregulated (\u3e2-fold change), which suggests carbon flux through this catabolic pathway. Finally, syntrophic interactions occurred with strains that utilize carbohydrate products derived from initial degradation from heterologous bacteria

    Path analyses of yield and some agronomic and quality traits of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under different environments

    This research was conducted to determine characters effecting grain yield in fifty bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars and advanced lines by using simple correlation coefficient and path analysis under 2 locations (high rainfall and low rainfall; 745 and 506 mm, respectively). A total of 50 genotypes, 25 for each independent experiment, were tested for grain yield, test weight, 1000-kernel weight, Zeleny sedimentation, protein content and plant height. Grain yield was significantly correlated with plant height in high rainfall condition. It was significantly correlated with all components except Zeleny sedimentation and protein content in low rainfall condition. Results suggest  that plant height and test weight are primary selection criteria for improving grain yield in bread wheat in high and low rainfall conditions.Key words: Bread wheat, grain yield and components, correlation coefficient, path analyses

    Scalar Casimir effect between two concentric D-dimensional spheres

    The Casimir energy for a massless scalar field between the closely spaced two concentric D-dimensional (for D>3) spheres is calculated by using the mode summation with contour integration in the complex plane of eigenfrequencies and the generalized Abel-Plana formula for evenly spaced eigenfrequency at large argument. The sign of the Casimir energy between closely spaced two concentric D-dimensional spheres for a massless scalar field satisfying the Dirichlet boundary conditions is strictly negative. The Casimir energy between D-1 dimensional surfaces close to each other is regarded as interesting both by itself and as the key to describing of stability of the attractive Casimir force.     Esterase variation in Turkish white-toothed shrews (Crocidura): Record of a trimeric esterase

    This study focuses on esterase variation of the genus Crocidura in Turkey. A total of 248 white-toothed shrews were analyzed by means of cellulose acetate gel electrophoresis. Liver tissue and alfa naphthyl acetate were used to investigate esterase variation in Turkish white-toothed shrews. A different esterase banding pattern was found in one Crocidura individual. This phenotype had four anodally migrated bands on cellulose acetate gel. The Crocidura individual displaying the given phenotype was identified as Crocidura suaveolens. The different esterase banding pattern observed in this study is considered to be a result of the trimeric structure of esterase in the lesser white-toothed shrew (Crocidura suaveolens)

    The fit of tapered posts in root canals luted with zinc phosphate cement:A histological study

    Objectives. Stress transmission to the root through passive fitting dental posts is partly influenced by the thickness of the cement layer between the post and the prepared root canal surface as well as the fit of the post in the root canal. The objective of this study was to compare the cement gap between the post surfaces and the root canals using five prefabricated, tapered, unthreaded titanium posts of different manufacturers, without and with cement. Methods. Following the endodontic treatment with hand instruments of 100 intact anterior teeth, post spaces were prepared using opening drills of the corresponding size of post. Fifty posts were cemented with zinc phosphate cement into the roots for each system while another 50 posts were inserted into the canal without using the cement. After histological sectioning, the cement gap was measured at six sites for three times at the coronal, middle and apical regions between the root canal wall and the post surface under a light microscope before and after cementation. Results. Before cementation, the highest overall cement gap was observed with the Dr Mooser post system (R) (46 mu m) and the lowest with the Velva post system (R) and Cylindro-Conical system (R) (30 mu m). Significantly less (P <0.05) mean cement gap was observed with respect to the Erlangen post system (R) (41 mu m), the Dr Mooser post system (R) (48 mu m), the MP Pirec post system (R) (34 mu m) and Velva post system (R) (33 pm) when compared with the Cylindro-Conical system (R) (62 tm). The Cylindro-Conical system (R) (79, 61 gm) and MP Pirec post system (R) (25, 24 tm) demonstrated no significant difference (P > 0.001) compared with Velva-Post (R) (38, 20 mu m) at the coronal and middle part, respectively (Mann-Whitney U-test, Boneferroni correction). Significant differences (P <0.001) were observed between the cement gap at the coronal and apical part for the Cylindro-Conical system (R) (79, 46 mu m), Dr Mooser post system (R) (45, 56 mu m) and MP Pirec post system (R) (25, 52 mu m). After cementation, the highest cement gap at the coronal part was obtained with the Cylindro-Conical system (R) (79 +/- 21 mu m) and the lowest with the MP Pirec post system (R) (25 +/- 9 mu m). However, at the apical end, the MP Pirec post system (R) (52 +/- 89 gm) and Dr Mooser post system (R) (56 +/- 16 gm) revealed the highest gap. Significance. Form-congruence between the preparation drill and the post systems exhibited differences. The most consistent cement gap either at the coronal, middle or apical parts of the root canals was obtained with the Erlangen post system (R). (c) 2005 Academy of Dental Materials.     Electrochemical cardiac troponin I immunosensor based on nitrogen and boron-doped graphene quantum dots electrode platform and Ce-doped SnO2/SnS2 signal amplification

    The detection of acute myocardial infarction directly depends on the concentration of the cardiac troponin I (CTnI) in human blood plasma. In this study, the sensitive, selective, and fast sandwich-type electrochemical CTnI immunosensor was developed by using nitrogen and boron-dopped graphene quantum dots -as electrode platform and two-dimensional Ce-dopped SnO2/SnS2 (Ce–SnO2/SnS2) as signal amplification. In preparation of electrochemical CTnI immunosensor, the coordinated covalent bond between capture antibody (anti-CTnI-Ab1) and nitrogen and boron-dopped graphene quantum dots as electrode platform led to immobilization of anti-CTnI-Ab1, and the strong esterification between the secondary antibody (anti-CTnI-Ab2) and thioglycolic acid-modified Ce–SnO2/SnS2 resulted in anti-CTnI-Ab2 conjugation. Finally, the resultant electrochemical CTnI immunosensor was formed via antigen-antibody interaction. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, as well as some electrochemical characterization techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to characterize the prepared immunosensor. The detection limit of CTnI in plasma samples was calculated as 2.00 fg mL−1, making it an effective tool for acute myocardial infarction testing. © 2021 Elsevier Lt

    A stochastic local search algorithm with adaptive acceptance for high-school timetabling

    Automating high school timetabling is a challenging task. This problem is a well known hard computational problem which has been of interest to practitioners as well as researchers. High schools need to timetable their regular activities once per year, or even more frequently. The exact solvers might fail to find a solution for a given instance of the problem. A selection hyper-heuristic can be defined as an easy-to-implement, easy-to-maintain and effective 'heuristic to choose heuristics' to solve such computationally hard problems. This paper describes the approach of the team hyper-heuristic search strategies and timetabling (HySST) to high school timetabling which competed in all three rounds of the third international timetabling competition. HySST generated the best new solutions for three given instances in Round 1 and gained the second place in Rounds 2 and 3. It achieved this by using a fairly standard stochastic search method but significantly enhanced by a selection hyper-heuristic with an adaptive acceptance mechanism. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York
