The already intriguing electronic and optical properties of the MXene Sc2C family can be further tuned through a wide range of possible functionalizations. Here, by means of density functional theory, we show that the 36 possible elements of the Janus MXT (M: Sc2C, X: O, F, OH, T: C, N, S) family, built by considering the four possible structural models (i) FCC, (ii) HCP, (iii) FCC + HCP, and (iv) HCP + FCC, are all potentially stable. The analysis of their mechanical properties shows the excellent mechanical flexibility of functionalized MXenes (f-MXenes) under large strain, making them more suitable for applications where stress could be an issue. Interestingly, while Sc2C presents a metallic character, Sc2COS, Sc2CFN and Sc2COHN are found to be semiconductors with bandgaps of 2.5 eV (indirect), 1.67 eV (indirect) and 1.1 eV (direct), respectively, which presents promising applications for nano- and optoelectronics. Moreover, Sc2CFC presents a ferromagnetic ground state with the 2 × 2 × 1 supercell magnetic moment of 3.99 μB, while the ground state of Sc2COHC might be antiferromagnetic with a magnetic moment of 3.98 μB, depending on the environment. Remarkably, the band structures of Sc2CFC and Sc2COHC present a half-metallic character with an HSE06 fundamental band gap of 0.60 eV and 0.48 eV, respectively. Our results confirm the extraordinary potential of the Janus MXT (M: Sc2C, X: O, F, OH, T: C, N, S) family for novel applications in 2D nano-,opto- and spintronics

The seed oils from seven Turkish and ten Vietnamese varieties of Citrus fruits were examined for their fatty acid composition, tocopherols and sterol contents. The oil contents of the samples varied between 32.1 g/100 g and 58.8 g/100 g. The major fatty acid of the extracted seed oils was oleic (12.8-70.1%), followed by linoleic (19.5-58.8%) and palmitic (5.1-28.3%). Stearic, vaccenic, linolenic and arachidic acids were found at low levels. The total content of vitamin E active compounds in the oils ranged between 0.8 and 21.0 mg/100 g. The predominant isomers were α- and γ-tocopherol, with approximate equal amounts between about 0.4 and 17.5 mg/100 g. The total sterol contents of the oils were found between 1310.54 and 3986.58 mg/kg, with β -sitosterol as the predominant sterol that accounted for more than 70% of the total amount of sterols. Other sterols, campesterol (8.03-15.26%), stigmasterol (2.55-7.69%), ∆5-avenasterol (1.80-5.67%), cholesterol (0.83-2.70%) and chlerosterol (0.93-1.78%) were detected in most of the oils. The results of the present study indicate that the seed oils of Citrus fruits are considered to be a potential oil source due to their fatty acid composition and important tocopherol and sterol, and might be used for edible applications as well as the production of potential value-added products.

Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is the problem of finding a minimum distance tour of cities beginning and ending at the same city and that each city are visited only once. As the number of cities increases, it is difficult to find an optimal solution by exact methods in a reasonable duration. Therefore, in recent five decades many heuristic solution methods inspired of nature and biology have been developed. In this paper, a new metaheuristic method inspired of the by-passing the obstacle strategy of blind mole rats living in their individual tunnel systems under the soil is designed for solving TSP. The method is called as Blind Mole-rat Algorithm. The proposed algorithm is tested on different size of symmetric TSP problems and the results are compared to the best known results. Initial test results are promising although proposed metaheuristic is not yet competitive enough among other algorithms in the literature

Between a rock and a hard place: corporate elites in the context of religion and secularism in Turkey

Drawing on discourse analyses of 36 in-depth interviews with elite business people from Turkey, the study identifies the networking patterns of new and established business elites in the context of economic liberalization and socioreligious transformation of the country. Through a comparative analysis of the so-called secular and religious elite networks, we demonstrate the role of institutional actors such as the government, and identity networks, based on religion and place of birth in shaping the form and content of social networks among business elites in Turkey. In order to achieve this, we operationalize Bourdieu's notion of theory of practice and Granovetter's theory of social networks, illustrating the utility of combining these approaches in explicating the form and content of social networks in their situated contexts, in which power and divergent interests are negotiated.Galatasaray University Research Fund [grant number 12.102.005]

Superfluid Density in a Highly Underdoped YBCO Superconductor

The superfluid density rho_s(T) = 1/lambda^2(T) has been measured at 2.64 GHz in highly underdoped YBCO, at 37 dopings with T_c between 3 K and 17 K. Within limits set by the transition width Delta T_c ~ 0.4 K, rho_s(T) shows no evidence of critical fluctuations as T goes to T_c, with a mean-field-like transition and no indication of vortex unbinding. Instead, we propose that rho_s displays the behaviour expected for a quantum phase transition in the (3 + 1)-dimensional XY universality class, with rho_s0 ~ (p - p_c), T_c ~ (p - p_c)^1/2 and rho_s(T) ~ (T_c - T)^1 as T goes to T_c.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; final version of pape

A stochastic local search algorithm with adaptive acceptance for high-school timetabling

    Get PDF
Automating high school timetabling is a challenging task. This problem is a well known hard computational problem which has been of interest to practitioners as well as researchers. High schools need to timetable their regular activities once per year, or even more frequently. The exact solvers might fail to find a solution for a given instance of the problem. A selection hyper-heuristic can be defined as an easy-to-implement, easy-to-maintain and effective 'heuristic to choose heuristics' to solve such computationally hard problems. This paper describes the approach of the team hyper-heuristic search strategies and timetabling (HySST) to high school timetabling which competed in all three rounds of the third international timetabling competition. HySST generated the best new solutions for three given instances in Round 1 and gained the second place in Rounds 2 and 3. It achieved this by using a fairly standard stochastic search method but significantly enhanced by a selection hyper-heuristic with an adaptive acceptance mechanism. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York

Background: Glutaric aciduria type 1(GA-1) is an inherited cerebral organic aciduria. Untreated patients with GA-1 have a risk of acute encephalopathic crises during the first 6 years of life. In so far as GA-1 desperately does not exist in Turkish newborn screening (NBS) program, most patients in our study were late-diagnosed. / Method: This study included 41 patients diagnosed with acylcarnitine profile, urinary organic acids, mutation analyses in the symptomatic period. We presented with clinical, neuroradiological, and molecular data of our 41 patients. / Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 14.8 13.9 (15 days to 72 months) and, high blood glutaconic acid, glutarylcarnitine and urinary glutaric acid (GA) levels in 41 patients were revealed. Seventeen different mutations in the glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase gene were identified, five of which were novel. The patients, most of whom were late-diagnosed, had a poor neurological outcome. Treatment strategies made a little improvement in dystonia and the frequency of encephalopathic attacks. / Conclusion: All GA-1 patients in our study were severely affected since they were latediagnosed, while others show that GA-1 is a treatable metabolic disorder if it is diagnosed with NBS. This study provides an essential perspective of the severe impact on GA-1 patients unless it is diagnosed with NBS. We immediately advocate GA-1 to be included in the Turkish NBS
