Trabajo presentado a la DRUID Society Conference on "Entrepreneurship - Organization - Innovation" celebrada en Copenahgue (Dinamarca) del 16 al 18 de junio de 2014.In this study, we analyze the determinants of biomedical scientists? participation in various types of activities and outputs related to medical innovation. More specifically, we argue that scientists occupying brokerage positions among their contacts will in a more favorable position to deliver medical innovation outcomes, compared to scientists embedded in more dense networks. However, we also theorize that beyond a threshold, the coordination costs of brokerage may surpass its potential benefits. In addition to that, we study the influence of two individual-level attributes as potential determinants of the participation in medical innovation activities: cognitive breadth and perceived beneficiary impact. We situate our analysis within the context of the Spanish biomedical research framework, where we analyze a sample of 1,309 biomedical scientists.Peer Reviewe

Peer Reviewe

Analysis of character construction in transmedia advertising narrative: Case Study: Campaign "Cerca" by Sabadell Bank.

    Get PDF
The development of digital media and socialization has generated new forms of interaction. In addition, it breaks with the traditional structure of the story. New forms is given place, like transmedia. In these narratives, the character has a fundamental role. Characters that exist in their own possible world. Their presence is vital for their behavior and personality matches with their universe and the interaction of other elements of the story. The aim of this study is to validate, in the first instance, a model of character analysis in the transmedia. The analysis of transmedia characters present in the language of advertising, can lay the groundwork for future studies on new narratives. In this case, we analyze the characters involved in the campaign "Close" Banco Sabadell.post-print1928 K

Just transitions to renewables in mining areas: Local system dynamics

    Get PDF
[EN] In the field of just energy transitions, local scales have been relegated and limited to qualitative approaches with non-specific methods by observation. Local quantitative approaches have gained popularity but remain far from the topic of just transitions and elude rural areas, probably because of data scarcity. Amid the quantitative panoply, system dynamics is attracting greater attention to alleviate such data shortages. Yet, despite the claim for holistic approaches, its application is scarce in rural contexts. This research presents an intuitive, scalable, and easily adaptable modelling exercise through system dynamics to estimate the effects on net employment and land availability of restructuring towards renewable energy sources in the rural mining areas of León (Spain), presenting possible lessons and policy implications for local and rural just transitions. A partially just transition is feasible in the short term, but a properly just transition is three decades late. The most optimistic projections suggest the potential creation of around five thousand jobs per zone, which is significantly fewer than the approximately forty-five thousand jobs that were recorded during the peak years of coal mining exploitation. Renewables fail to keep a young, qualified population in the areas, therefore showing the need to potentiate alternative activities, as well as causing sensitive trade-offs between land requirements and potential net employment. Land reductions for renewable projects vary depending on the scenario, ranging from 6 % to 17 %. This range poses a threat to the ecological integrity of these areas.S

Ultra-long light sheets via curved beam intercrossing

An approach to yield a planar light sheet with thickness below the Abbe’s diffraction limit over ultra-long propagation distances is presented. Such features emerge by an induced interference of the fields associated to the caustic branches of a cusp-type curved beam. The optical sheet width and length are dynamically tuned by just varying one parameter of the signal encoded in a spatial light modulator within a standard setup for curved beam generation. This light sheet possesses the following characteristics: a high length-to-width ratio, a width below the Abbe’s diffraction limit, reduced sidelobes, and very low spreading along the sheet length. These planar light sheets could be useful in light-sheet microscopy and applications to surface and interface physics. In addition, these sheets can be easily transformed in an optical needle having rectangular symmetry by using a two-dimensional cusp beam instead of an one-dimensional beam.Fil: Neyra, Enrique Gustavo.
