Agreement Verbs in Turkish Sign Language (TİD) from the Perspective of Templatic Morphology

    Get PDF
One of the peculiarities of sign languages is that verbs are listed in the lexicon according to agreement types that are categorized by tripartite verb classification of Padden (1983, 1988, 1990): (i) plain verbs, (ii) agreement verbs, and (iii) spatial verbs. However, Padden’s classical classification does not clearly present the mutually exclusive criteria between the verb types in that transitions between the types have been frequently observed. In this study we aim to show that verb types are related to the combination of roots with specific verbal templates within TİD data, by following the view that SLs are similar to Semitic languages in exhibiting morphological [root + template] combination (Liddell, 1984; Fernald & Lillo-Martin, 2006). We analyze the root as an underspecified lexical and phonological core that becomes a pronounceable/signable verb in combining with verbal patterns/templates in the lexicalization process and suggest that TİD has six different verbal templates which can be characterized in terms of agreement

Muhammad Iqbal, the philosopher, and poet of the Indian Subcontinent enlightened history with his philosophical ideas by including different nations of the world in his works. Iqbal emphasized that Westerners brought materialism to the fore, by this they were deprived of spiritual feelings. In this work, we have touched upon the fact that Muhammad Iqbal knew that the main purpose of the Western states who came to his country under the pretext of trade was not trading. He struggled against the hegemony of the Western colonial powers who wanted to make the Indian Subcontinent their colonies, and he opposed this situation. We mentioned that Western states are seen as devoid of spiritual feelings and are technologically advanced. In this regard, we gave place to Iqbal’s views, which states that Muslims can take the West as an example in this regard. In his works, he advised Indian Subcontinent people to stay away from their culture. Muhammad Iqbal emphasized, Muslims should not stop at one point, they should constantly strive and develop, and the Islamic World should turn towards new goals. He stressed that Muslims should return to their essence and that inertia is not inherent in Islam. Besides, being full of patriotism, Iqbal expressed that the scholars who grow up in the Subcontinent are very valuable.Hint Alt Kıtasının filozof ve şairi Muhammed İkbal, dünyanın farklı milletlerine felsefi fikirleri doğrultusunda eserlerinde yer vererek tarihe ışık tutmuştur. Batılıların maddeciliği ve materyalizmi ön plana çıkardığını dile getiren İkbal, manevi duygulardan yoksun kaldıklarını vurgulamıştır. Bu çalışmada Muhammed İkbal’in, ticaret bahanesiyle ülkesine gelen Batılı devletlerin asıl amacının ticaret olmadığının farkında olduğuna, Hint Alt Kıtasını sömürgeleri haline getirmek isteyen Batılı sömürge güçlerinin başında gelen İngiltere’nin hegemonyası altına girmemesi için verdiği mücadeleye ve bu duruma başkaldırışına değindik. Batı devletlerinin manevi duygulardan yoksun, teknolojik açıdan ileri olduğunu dile getiren İkbal’in, Müslümanların bu konuda Batı’yı örnek alabileceklerini içeren görüşlerine yer verdik.

On direct measurement of the W production charge asymmetry at the LHC

The prospects for making a direct measurement of the W production charge asymmetry at the LHC are discussed. A modification to the method used at the Tevatron is proposed for measurements at the LHC. The expected sensitivity for such a measurement to parton distribution functions is compared to that for a measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry. The direct measurement approach is found to be less useful for placing constraints on parton distribution functions at the LHC than a measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, v2: references and keywords updated v3: Additional paragraph discussing inclusion of W asymmetry in global fits adde

    Heart attack or rhabdomyolysis?

Statins are commonly used drugs in the treatment of hyperlipidemia (HL), despite some undesirable side effects. These range from mild symptoms such as myopathy, muscle weakness and myalgia to severe muscle weakness associated with chronic myopathy and acute renal failure (ARF) as a result of rhabdomyolysis. The most serious and deadly side effect of statins is rhabdomyolysis. The case presented here is of a patient with rhabdomyolysis due to treatment with the antihyperlipidemic drug, atorvastatin

Low Q^2 Jet Production at HERA and Virtual Photon Structure

    Get PDF
The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is investigated in jet production at the HERA ep collider, using data collected by the H1 experiment. Measurements of the differential inclusive jet cross-sections dsigep/dEt* and dsigmep/deta*, where Et* and eta* are the transverse energy and the pseudorapidity of the jets in the virtual photon-proton centre of mass frame, are presented for 0 < Q2 < 49 GeV2 and 0.3 < y < 0.6. The interpretation of the results in terms of the structure of the virtual photon is discussed. The data are best described by QCD calculations which include a partonic structure of the virtual photon that evolves with Q2.Comment: 20 pages, 5 Figure

Measurement of D* Meson Cross Sections at HERA and Determination of the Gluon Density in the Proton using NLO QCD

With the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA, D* meson production cross sections have been measured in deep inelastic scattering with four-momentum transfers Q^2>2 GeV2 and in photoproduction at energies around W(gamma p)~ 88 GeV and 194 GeV. Next-to-Leading Order QCD calculations are found to describe the differential cross sections within theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Using these calculations, the NLO gluon momentum distribution in the proton, x_g g(x_g), has been extracted in the momentum fraction range 7.5x10^{-4}< x_g <4x10^{-2} at average scales mu^2 =25 to 50 GeV2. The gluon momentum fraction x_g has been obtained from the measured kinematics of the scattered electron and the D* meson in the final state. The results compare well with the gluon distribution obtained from the analysis of scaling violations of the proton structure function F_2.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Nucl. Hadron Production in Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering

Characteristics of hadron production in diffractive deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering are studied using data collected in 1994 by the H1 experiment at HERA. The following distributions are measured in the centre-of-mass frame of the photon dissociation system: the hadronic energy flow, the Feynman-x (x_F) variable for charged particles, the squared transverse momentum of charged particles (p_T^{*2}), and the mean p_T^{*2} as a function of x_F. These distributions are compared with results in the gamma^* p centre-of-mass frame from inclusive deep-inelastic scattering in the fixed-target experiment EMC, and also with the predictions of several Monte Carlo calculations. The data are consistent with a picture in which the partonic structure of the diffractive exchange is dominated at low Q^2 by hard gluons.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.

Feature inheritance, vP phases and the information structure of small clauses

In this paper we explore the interaction of discourse properties in the syntax of small clauses from a cross-linguistic perspective. In line with Chomsky’s (2007, 2008) idea that phasal properties should be extended to all phases, we argue for a strict parallelism between C-T and v-V, suggesting that v enters the derivation with both agreement and discourse features. These features may be inherited by V depending on the relevant language. Building on Miyagawa (2010) and Jim enez-Fern andez (2010), we claim that in Spanish and Greek, in contrast with English, both agreement and discourse features are inherited by V. This strategy accounts for the different order rearrangements detected in small clauses. The proposal can easily be extended to other languages such as Italian, Serbo-Croatian, Russian and Ukrainian, as opposed to French, Norwegian, Afrikaans and Germa

A Purity Monitoring System for the H1 Liquid Argon Calorimeter

The ionization probes used for monitoring the liquid argon purity in the H1 calorimeter are described and results of their operation in tests at CERN and during the period 1992 to the end of 1998 at HERA are given. The high sensitivity of the charge measurements leads to refined charge collection models, and to the observation of a variation of the ionization yield of our electron sources with temperature.Comment: 26 pages, 14 figure
