    Competition between decay and dissociation of core-excited OCS studied by X-ray scattering

    We show the first evidence of dissociation during resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering. Carbon and oxygen K-shell and sulfur L-shell resonant and non-resonant X-ray emission spectra were measured using monochromatic synchrotron radiation for excitation and ionization. After sulfur, L2,3 -> {\pi}*, {\sigma}* excitation, atomic lines are observed in the emission spectra as a consequence of competition between de-excitation and dissociation. In contrast the carbon and oxygen spectra show weaker line shape variations and no atomic lines. The spectra are compared to results from ab initio calculations and the discussion of the dissociation paths is based on calculated potential energy surfaces and atomic transition energies.Comment: 12 pages, 6 pictures, 2 tables, http://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevA.59.428

    When are Antiaromatic Molecules Paramagnetic?

    Magnetizabilities and magnetically induced current densities have been calculated and analyzed for a series of antiaromatic cyclo[4k]carbons (k = 2-11), iso[n]phlorins (n = 4-8), expanded porphyrinoids, and meso-meso, beta-beta,beta-beta triple-linked porphyrin and isophlorin arrays. The cyclo[4k]carbons with k = 2-6 are predicted to be closed-shell paramagnetic molecules due to the very strong paratropic ring current combined with its large radius. Larger cyclo[4k]carbons with k = 6-11 are diamagnetic because they sustain a paratropic ring current whose strength is weaker than -20 nA T-1, which seems to be the lower threshold value for closed-shell paramagnetism. This holds not only for cyclo[4k]carbons but also for other organic molecules like expanded porphyrinoids and oligomers of porphyrinoids. The present study shows that meso-meso, beta-beta, beta-beta triple-linked linear porphyrin and isophlorin arrays have a domainlike distribution of alternating diatropic and paratropic ring currents. The strength of their local paratropic ring currents is weaker than -20 nA T-1 in each domain. Therefore, linear porphyrin and isophlorin arrays become more diamagnetic with increasing length of the ribbon. For the same reason, square-shaped meso-meso, beta-beta, beta-beta triple-linked free-base porphyrin and isophlorin tetramers as well as the Zn(II) complex of the porphyrin tetramer are diamagnetic. We show that closed-shell molecules with large positive magnetizabilities can be designed by following the principle that a strong paratropic current ring combined with a large ring-current radius leads to closed-shell paramagnetism.Peer reviewe

    Decline after immobilisation and recovery after remobilisation of synovial fluid IL1, TIMP, and chondroitin sulphate levels in young beagle dogs

    OBJECTIVE: To monitor the concentration of markers of cartilage and synovium metabolism in the knee (stifle) joint synovial fluid of young beagles subjected to immobilisation and subsequent remobilisation.METHODS: The right hind limb of 17 dogs was immobilised in flexion for 11 weeks. Simultaneously, the contralateral left knee was exposed to increased weight bearing. The remobilisation period lasted 50 weeks. Litter mates served as controls. The concentration in joint lavage fluid of interleukin 1 (IL1) was measured by immunoassay, the activity of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) was determined by an extraction method, chondroitin sulphate (CS) concentration by precipitation with Alcian blue, hyaluronan (HA) by an ELISA-like assay using biotinylated HA-binding complexes, matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP-3), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP-1) by sandwich ELISA, and synovitis was scored by light microscopy.RESULTS: Synovitis or effusion was absent in all experimental and control groups. Immobilisation decreased the joint lavage fluid levels of IL1 (p<0.05), TIMP (p< 0.05), and the concentration of CS down to 38 (p<0.05) in comparison with untreated litter mates with normal weight bearing. Immobilisation did not affect the activity of PLA2, or the concentration of MMP-3 or HA in synovial fluid. Joint remobilisation restored the decreased concentrations of markers to control levels. Increased weight bearing did not change the concentrations of markers in comparison with the control joints with normal weight bearing.CONCLUSIONS: 11 weeks joint immobilisation decreased the concentration of markers of cartilage and synovium metabolism in the synovial fluid, and remobilisation restored the concentrations to control levels. The changes in joint metabolism induced by immobilisation, as reflected by the markers, are thus different from those found in osteoarthritis, where increased levels of these markers are associated with enhanced degradation and synthesis. These findings suggest that the change induced in joint metabolism by immobilisation is reversible in its early stages

    Effects of Saturn's magnetospheric dynamics on Titan's ionosphere

    We use the Cassini Radio and Plasma Wave Science/Langmuir probe measurements of the electron density from the first 110 flybys of Titan to study how Saturn´s magnetosphere influences Titan´s ionosphere. The data is first corrected for biased sampling due to varying solar zenith angle and solar energy flux (solar cycle effects). We then present results showing that the electron density in Titan´s ionosphere, in the altitude range 1600-2400 km, is increased by about a factor of 2.5 when Titan is located on the nightside of Saturn (Saturn local time (SLT) 21-03 h) compared to when on the dayside (SLT 09-15 h). For lower altitudes (1100-1600 km) the main dividing factor for the ionospheric density is the ambient magnetospheric conditions. When Titan is located in the magnetospheric current sheet, the electron density in Titan´s ionosphere is about a factor of 1.4 higher compared to when Titan is located in the magnetospheric lobes. The factor of 1.4 increase in between sheet and lobe flybys is interpreted as an effect of increased particle impact ionization from 200 eV sheet electrons. The factor of 2.5 increase in electron density between flybys on Saturn´s nightside and dayside is suggested to be an effect of the pressure balance between thermal plus magnetic pressure in Titan´s ionosphere against the dynamic pressure and energetic particle pressure in Saturn´s magnetosphere.Fil: Edberg, N.
