Testing is a crucial activity in the development of software systems. With the increasing complexity of software projects, the industry requires incorporating graduates with adequate testing skills and preparation in this field. A challenge in software testing education is to make students perceive the benefits of writing tests and assess their quality with advanced testing techniques. In this paper, we present an experience integrating both mutation testing and self/peer assessment –two of the most used techniques to that end in the past– into a software testing course during three years. This experience allowed us to analyze the effect of applying these strategies on the students’ perception of their manually-written test suites. Noticeably, the computation of the mutation score significantly undermined the initial expectations they had on the developed test suites. Also, the application of peer testing helped them estimate the relative quality of two comparable test suites, as we found a notable correspondence with their respective mutation coverage. Besides, a more in-depth analysis revealed that the students' test suites with more test cases did not always achieve the highest scores, that they found more readable their own tests, and that they tended to cover the basic operations while forgetting about more advanced features. An opinion survey confirmed the impact that the use of mutants had on their perception about testing, and they mostly supported paying a higher level of attention to testing concepts in software engineering degree plans. The work was partially funded by the European Commission (FEDER), the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities under the project FAME (RTI2018-093608-B-C33), the European project ASSETs (612678-EPP-1-2019-1-IT-EPPKA2-SSA-B), and the University of Cádiz

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is one of the most common types of violence against women. Although personality disorders have been associated with IPV, perpetration research regarding personality according to the classification specialist/generalist IPV perpetrators is scarce. The general aim of this study was to describe personality in a large sample of IPV Spanish male perpetrators considering their classification (special ist vs. generalist). Participants were 1093 men convicted of IPV crimes whose ages ranged from 18 to 76 years old (M = 40.15; SD = 10.32). Of them, 554 men were classified as specialist perpetrators and 539 men were classified as generalist perpetrators. Participants completed questionnaires regarding sociodemographic and violence aspects as well as the Spanish version of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III. Generalist perpetrators showed higher means in nearly all the personal ity disorders scales compared to specialist perpetrators. Prevalence rates in the majority of personality disorders were lower than 5%. Higher scores on the avoidant, histrionic, and self-defeating scales and lower scores on the aggressive, borderline, and drug dependence scales were related to being a specialist perpetrator. This study contributes to a better understanding of personality among generalist and specialist perpetrators.

    Get PDF
Software testing is a key phase in the development of programs. Despite its importance, and the fact that the cost associated with software defects increases as programs become more complex, this phase often does not receive the necessary attention. In the context of software engineering studies, design and coding activities have a predominant presence; as a result, students may tend to see software testing as a burden rather than a benefit for the final quality of the product. In this paper, we present the experience carried out to try to raise student awareness about the value of creating quality software tests, using specialized techniques and tools in comparison with manual and unguided development. To this end, we designed a practice that confronts the student’s perception of the adequacy of their tests against an automatic assessment based on the technique known as mutation testing (which is indicative of the fault detection ability of the test suite). In general, the practice meets its goals. We observe a decrease in the subjective assessments regarding their own test suites (self-assessment) and regarding those of their peers (co-assessment) after knowing the more objective result of mutation analysis.

Morphological evolution in the migrating dune of Valdevaqueros (SW Spain) during an eleven-year period

    Get PDF
Located in Tarifa, near the Strait of Gibraltar, the migration of Valdevaqueros dune was controlled by sand extractions for building purpose. As the Spanish Shore Act was approved in 1988, the sale of sand was forbidden and the dune started to move forward, burying the leeward pine wood and the only road to Maspalomas village. Consequently, six topographic levellings have been taken during the last eleven years. Sedimentary granulometries and meteorological features were taken into account. D50 values have been calculated for dune foot, windward and dune top. Wind speed threshold is estimated above 15 km/h. East winds are responsible for dune movement, whose advance rate has reached very high values (over 18 m/year). Slope and volumetric changes have been determined, providing a clearer explanation of the dune evolutio

Nickel and Palladium Complexes with New Phosphinito-Imine Ligands and Their Application as Ethylene Oligomerization Catalysts

Phosphinito-imines, a new class of P,N donors, are readily generated by reaction of bulky arylamide anions [R2CONAr]− (R2 = Me or t-Bu; Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H4) with chlorophosphines ClP(R1)2. In solution, free phosphinito-imines exist in equilibrium with the corresponding amidophosphine tautomers, containing a nitrogen-bound P(R1)2 group. However, reacting the tautomer mixtures with metal precursor complexes, such as NiBr2(dme) or PdCl2(cod), selectively affords stable phosphinito-imine complexes MX2(P-N) (M = Ni, Pd) in excellent yields. These complexes are diamagnetic and exhibit square-planar structures in the solid state, but in solution, the Ni derivatives exchange with a small amount of the corresponding high-spin tetrahedral isomers. On treatment with MMAO or DEAC, NiX2(P-N) complexes become active ethylene oligomerization catalysts, affording mainly butenes along with smaller amounts of hexenes and octenes. The activity and the selectivity of these catalysts depend on the structure of the phosphinito-imine ligand and the cocatalyst used. When activated with DEAC, complexes containing the P(i-Pr)2 moiety are extremely active, achieving TOFs over 106 mol C2H4/mol Ni·h and high selectivity for butenes.Junta de Andalucía P09- FQM507

Assessment of the sensitivity and specificity of serological (IFAT) and molecular (direct PCR) techniques for diagnosis of leishmaniasis in lagomorphs using a Bayesian approach

Leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania infantum, is a vector-borne zoonotic disease that is endemic to the Mediterranean basin. The potential of rabbits and hares to serve as competent reservoirs for the disease has recently been demonstrated, although assessment of the importance of their role on disease dynamics is hampered by the absence of quantitative knowledge on the accuracy of diagnostic techniques in these species. A Bayesian latent-class model was used here to estimate the sensitivity and specificity of the Immuno-fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) in serum and a Leishmania-nested PCR (Ln-PCR) in skin for samples collected from 217 rabbits and 70 hares from two different populations in the region of Madrid, Spain. A two-population model, assuming conditional independence between test results and incorporating prior information on the performance of the tests in other animal species obtained from the literature, was used. Two alternative cut-off values were assumed for the interpretation of the IFAT results: 1/50 for conservative and 1/25 for sensitive interpretation. Results suggest that sensitivity and specificity of the IFAT were around 70–80%, whereas the Ln-PCR was highly specific (96%) but had a limited sensitivity (28.9% applying the conservative interpretation and 21.3% with the sensitive one). Prevalence was higher in the rabbit population (50.5% and 72.6%, for the conservative and sensitive interpretation, respectively) than in hares (6.7% and 13.2%). Our results demonstrate that the IFAT may be a useful screening tool for diagnosis of leishmaniasis in rabbits and hares. These results will help to design and implement surveillance programmes in wild species, with the ultimate objective of early detecting and preventing incursions of the disease into domestic and human populations

    Get PDF
