Exploring Food Detection using CNNs
One of the most common critical factors directly related to the cause of a
chronic disease is unhealthy diet consumption. In this sense, building an
automatic system for food analysis could allow a better understanding of the
nutritional information with respect to the food eaten and thus it could help
in taking corrective actions in order to consume a better diet. The Computer
Vision community has focused its efforts on several areas involved in the
visual food analysis such as: food detection, food recognition, food
localization, portion estimation, among others. For food detection, the best
results evidenced in the state of the art were obtained using Convolutional
Neural Network. However, the results of all these different approaches were
gotten on different datasets and therefore are not directly comparable. This
article proposes an overview of the last advances on food detection and an
optimal model based on GoogLeNet Convolutional Neural Network method, principal
component analysis, and a support vector machine that outperforms the state of
the art on two public food/non-food datasets
Unified covariant treatment of hyperfine splitting for heavy and light mesons
This paper aims at proving the fundamental role of a relativistic formulation
for quarkonia models.
We present a completely covariant description of a two-quark system
interacting by the Cornell potential with a Breit term describing the hyperfine
splitting. Using an appropriate procedure to calculate the Breit correction, we
find heavy meson masses in excellent agreement with experimental data.
Moreover, also when applied to light quarks and even taking average values of
the running coupling constant, we prove that covariance properties and
hyperfine splitting are sufficient to explain the light mesons spectrum and to
give a very good agreement with the data.Comment: 4 page
Comparative Adsorption of Spiramycin on Veegum®, Activated Charcoal and Garcinia kola Heckel (Guttiferea) Seed
Purpose: To investigate the adsorptive interaction of Garcinia kola with spiramycin, since the kola is widely chewed as a tonic and spiramycin attains high concentrations in saliva.Methods: Spiramycin solutions of different concentration were added to a fixed mass of Garcinia kola (200 mg), activated charcoal or Veegum®. Shaking was carried out at room temperature after which the dispersion was filtered and the filtrate assayed for residual drug concentration. The process was repeated under different equilibrium conditions of pH and ionic strength. The adsorption data obtained for the three adsorbents were analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich’s plots.Results: At neutral pH, drug adsorprtion by Garcinia kola, activated charcoal and Veegum® were 67, 54 and 71 %, respectively; differences in adsorption was not significant (p = 0.09). However, the other two adsorbents exhibited adverse adsorption characteristics in terms of negative adsorption capacity (-5.78 mol.kg-1) and constant (-1141 mol-1L). For each of the adsorbents, pH and ionic strength affected the extent of adsorption, due to their effect on adsorbent surface charge. Correlation with Langmuir and Freundlich relationships were poor, the correlation coefficient for the latter being 0.97, 0.894 and 0.351 for Garcinia kola, Veegum® and activated charcoal, respectively.Conclusion: The study reveals that Garcinia kola significantly adsorbs spiramycin under alkaline conditions comparable to salivary pH, and therefore should not be taken concurrently with the drug in order to minimize reduction in drug levels.Keywords: Garcinia kola, Spiramycin, Adsorption, Antidote, Interaction, Langmuir plot, Freundlich’s plo
Momentum Distribution in Nuclear Matter and Finite Nuclei
A simple method is presented to evaluate the effects of short-range
correlations on the momentum distribution of nucleons in nuclear matter within
the framework of the Green's function approach. The method provides a very
efficient representation of the single-particle Green's function for a
correlated system. The reliability of this method is established by comparing
its results to those obtained in more elaborate calculations. The sensitivity
of the momentum distribution on the nucleon-nucleon interaction and the nuclear
density is studied. The momentum distributions of nucleons in finite nuclei are
derived from those in nuclear matter using a local-density approximation. These

On relativization of the Sommerfeld-Gamow-Sakharov factor
The Sommerfeld-Gamow-Sakharov factor is considered for the general case of
arbitrary masses and energies. It is shown that the scalar triangular one-loop
diagram gives the Coulomb singularity in radiative corrections at the
threshold. The singular part of the correction is factorized at the complete
Born cross section regardless of its partial wave decomposition. Different

Reservoir pressure analysis of aortic blood pressure: an in-vivo study at five locations in humans
INTRODUCTION:: The development and propagation of the aortic blood pressure wave remains poorly understood, despite its clear relevance to major organ blood flow and potential association with cardiovascular outcomes. The reservoir pressure model provides a unified description of the dual conduit and reservoir functions of the aorta. Reservoir waveform analysis resolves the aortic pressure waveform into an excess (wave related) and reservoir (compliance related) pressure. The applicability of this model to the pressure waveform as it propagates along the aorta has not been investigated in humans. METHODS:: We analysed invasively acquired high-fidelity aortic pressure waveforms from 40 patients undergoing clinically indicated coronary catheterization. Aortic waveforms were measured using a solid-state pressure catheter at five anatomical sites: the ascending aorta, the transverse aortic arch, the diaphragm, the level of the renal arteries, and at the aortic bifurcation. Ensemble average pressure waveforms were obtained for these sites for each patient and analysed to obtain the reservoir pressure [Pr(t)] and the excess pressure [Px(t)] at each aortic position. RESULTS:: Systolic blood pressure increased at a rate of 2.1?mmHg per site along the aorta, whereas diastolic blood pressure was effectively constant. Maximum Pr decreased only slightly along the aorta (changing by −0.7?mmHg per site), whereas the maximum of Px increased from the proximal to distal aorta (+4.1?mmHg per site; P? < ?0.001). The time, relative to the start of systolic upstroke, of the occurrence of the maximum excess pressure did not vary along the aorta. Of the parameters used to derive the reservoir pressure waveform the systolic and diastolic rate constants showed divergent changes with the systolic rate constant (ks) decreasing and the diastolic rate constant (kd) increasing along the aorta. CONCLUSIONS:: This analysis confirms the proposition that the magnitude of the calculated reservoir pressure waveform, despite known changes in aortic structure, is effectively constant throughout the aorta. A progressive increase of excess pressure accounts for the increase in pulse pressure from the proximal to distal aorta. The reservoir pressure rate constants seem to behave as arterial functional parameters. The accompanying decrease in ks and increase in kd are consistent with a progressive decrease in aortic compliance and increase in impedance. The reservoir pressure waveform therefore provides a model that might have utility in understanding the generation of central blood pressure and in specific cases might have clinical utility
Iceland is an episodic source of atmospheric ice-nucleating particles relevant for mixed-phase clouds.
Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) have the potential to remove much of the liquid water in climatically important mid- to high-latitude shallow supercooled clouds, markedly reducing their albedo. The INP sources at these latitudes are very poorly defined, but it is known that there are substantial dust sources across the high latitudes, such as Iceland. Here, we show that Icelandic dust emissions are sporadically an important source of INPs at mid to high latitudes by combining ice-nucleating active site density measurements of aircraft-collected Icelandic dust samples with a global aerosol model. Because Iceland is only one of many high-latitude dust sources, we anticipate that the combined effect of all these sources may strongly contribute to the INP population in the mid- and high-latitude northern hemisphere. This is important because these emissions are directly relevant for the cloud-phase climate feedback and because high-latitude dust emissions are expected to increase in a warmer climate
Methyl jasmonate-elicited herbivore resistance: does MeJA function as a signal without being hydrolyzed to JA?
Treatment with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) elicits herbivore resistance in many plant species and over-expression of JA carboxyl methyltransferase (JMT) constitutively increases JA-induced responses in Arabidopsis. When wild-type (WT) Nicotiana attenuata plants are treated with MeJA, a rapid transient endogenous JA burst is elicited, which in turn increases levels of nicotine and trypsin proteinase inhibitors (TPIs) and resistance to larvae of the specialist herbivore, Manduca sexta. All of these responses are impaired in plants silenced in lipoxygenase 3 expression (asLOX3) but are restored to WT levels by MeJA treatment. Whether these MeJA-induced responses are directly elicited by MeJA or by its cleavage product, JA, is unknown. Using virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), we silenced MeJA-esterase (NaMJE) expression and found this gene responsible for most of the MeJA-cleaving activity in N. attenuata protein extracts. Silencing NaMJE in asLOX3, but not in WT plants, significantly reduced MeJA-induced nicotine levels and resistance to M. sexta, but not TPI levels. MeJA-induced transcript levels of threonine deaminase (NaTD) and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (NaPAL1) were also decreased in VIGS MJE (asLOX3) plants. Finally the performance of M. sexta larvae that fed on plants treated with JA or MeJA demonstrated that silencing NaMJE inhibited MeJA-induced but not JA-induced resistance in asLOX3 plants.
