Stability and Concentration Effects in the use of Siloxene as a Chemiluminescent Indicator in Redox Titrations
This 22 page thesis attempts to determine the limitations of, and to extend the applicability of siloxene as a chemiluminescent indicator in redox titrations
Advanced information processing system: Fault injection study and results
The objective of the AIPS program is to achieve a validated fault tolerant distributed computer system. The goals of the AIPS fault injection study were: (1) to present the fault injection study components addressing the AIPS validation objective; (2) to obtain feedback for fault removal from the design implementation; (3) to obtain statistical data regarding fault detection, isolation, and reconfiguration responses; and (4) to obtain data regarding the effects of faults on system performance. The parameters are described that must be varied to create a comprehensive set of fault injection tests, the subset of test cases selected, the test case measurements, and the test case execution. Both pin level hardware faults using a hardware fault injector and software injected memory mutations were used to test the system. An overview is provided of the hardware fault injector and the associated software used to carry out the experiments. Detailed specifications are given of fault and test results for the I/O Network and the AIPS Fault Tolerant Processor, respectively. The results are summarized and conclusions are given
Cross-reactions of immunoglobulin M and G antibodies with enterovirus-specific viral structural proteins
We analysed the reactivity of enterovirus-specific human IgM and IgG antibodies with the structural proteins of different enteroviruses by the immunoblot technique. In general, all immunoglobulin G antibodies of the tested sera reacted with capsid polypeptide VP 1 of the viruses tested (echoviruses 9 and 11, coxsackievirus B3 and poliovirus 2). In contrast, enterovirus specific immunoglobulin M antibodies of adults reacted with capsid polypeptides VP 1, VP 2, and/or VP 3 of the viruses mentioned above. The reactions with VP 2 and/or VP 3 were often stronger than with VP 1. IgM antibodies from sera of newborns infected by echovirus 11 reacted with VP 1 and VP 2/3 of echovirus 11 and also with VP 2 and VP 3 of poliovirus 2. Preabsorption experiments indicate that cross-reactive IgG antibodies react with epitopes of VP 1 not present on the surface of intact virus particles. The results from the immunoblot technique were compared to data from microneutralization tests and M-antibody capture radioimmunoassay
Harmonically confined, semiflexible polymer in a channel: response to a stretching force and spatial distribution of the endpoints
We consider an inextensible, semiflexible polymer or worm-like chain which is
confined in the transverse direction by a parabolic potential and subject to a
longitudinal force at the ends, so that the polymer is stretched out and
backfolding is negligible. Simple analytic expressions for the partition
function, valid in this regime, are obtained for chains of arbitrary length
with a variety of boundary conditions at the ends. The spatial distribution of
the end points or radial distribution function is also analyzed.Comment: 14 pages including figure
Lepton Polarization in the Decays and
The effective Hamiltonian for the decay predicts a
characteristic polarization for the final state lepton, which can serve as an
important test of the underlying theory. The lepton polarization has, in
addition to a longitudinal component , two orthogonal components and
, lying in and perpendicular to the decay plane which are proportional to
, and therefore significant for the channel. The normal
polarization component is a -odd effect connected with the
nonhermiticity of the effective Hamiltonian, arising mainly from
intermediate states. We calculate all three polarization components for the
decay as a function of the lepton pair mass, and find
average values = -0.63, = 0.03. By comparison,
the $\mu^-$ polarization is = -0.77, .Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures, uses epsf.sty and cite.st
Surface Critical Behavior of Binary Alloys and Antiferromagnets: Dependence of the Universality Class on Surface Orientation
The surface critical behavior of semi-infinite
(a) binary alloys with a continuous order-disorder transition and
(b) Ising antiferromagnets in the presence of a magnetic field is considered.
In contrast to ferromagnets, the surface universality class of these systems
depends on the orientation of the surface with respect to the crystal axes.
There is ordinary and extraordinary surface critical behavior for orientations
that preserve and break the two-sublattice symmetry, respectively. This is
confirmed by transfer-matrix calculations for the two-dimensional
antiferromagnet and other evidence.Comment: Final version that appeared in PRL, some minor stylistic changes and

Small business in Ukraine: problems and opportunity of efficient functioning
The article is devoted to the problems of small business and the possibility of its effective functioning in the current market conditions. Small business is an integral part of the market economy. Functioning in the current market conditions gives it flexibility, mobilizes financial and industrial resources, boosts scientific and technological progress, solves the problem of unemployment. Therefore, multilateral support of small business development and building a socially oriented economy should become the main vectors of reforms in Ukraine, which will serve as factorsof improving standards of life and facilitating the integration of national economy into the world global economy
On The Implementation Of Experimental Solenoids In MAD-X And Their Effect On Coupling In The LHC
The betatron coupling introduced by the experimental solenoids in the LHC is small at injection and negligible at collision energy. We present a study of these effects and look at possible corrections. Additionally we report about the implementation of solenoids in the MAD-X program. A thin solenoid version is also made available for tracking purposes
Thin Animals
Lattice animals provide a discretized model for the theta transition
displayed by branched polymers in solvent. Exact graph enumeration studies have
given some indications that the phase diagram of such lattice animals may
contain two collapsed phases as well as an extended phase. This has not been
confirmed by studies using other means. We use the exact correspondence between
the q --> 1 limit of an extended Potts model and lattice animals to investigate
the phase diagram of lattice animals on phi-cubed random graphs of arbitrary
topology (``thin'' random graphs). We find that only a two phase structure
exists -- there is no sign of a second collapsed phase.
The random graph model is solved in the thermodynamic limit by saddle point
methods. We observe that the ratio of these saddle point equations give
precisely the fixed points of the recursion relations that appear in the
solution of the model on the Bethe lattice by Henkel and Seno. This explains
the equality of non-universal quantities such as the critical lines for the
Bethe lattice and random graph ensembles.Comment: Latex, 10 pages plus 6 ps/eps figure
