No-Regret Learning in Extensive-Form Games with Imperfect Recall

Counterfactual Regret Minimization (CFR) is an efficient no-regret learning algorithm for decision problems modeled as extensive games. CFR's regret bounds depend on the requirement of perfect recall: players always remember information that was revealed to them and the order in which it was revealed. In games without perfect recall, however, CFR's guarantees do not apply. In this paper, we present the first regret bound for CFR when applied to a general class of games with imperfect recall. In addition, we show that CFR applied to any abstraction belonging to our general class results in a regret bound not just for the abstract game, but for the full game as well. We verify our theory and show how imperfect recall can be used to trade a small increase in regret for a significant reduction in memory in three domains: die-roll poker, phantom tic-tac-toe, and Bluff.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, expanded version of article to appear in Proceedings of the Twenty-Ninth International Conference on Machine Learnin

How users assess web pages for information-seeking

    Get PDF
In this paper, we investigate the criteria used by online searchers when assessing the relevance of web pages for information-seeking tasks. Twenty four participants were given three tasks each, and indicated the features of web pages which they employed when deciding about the usefulness of the pages in relation to the tasks. These tasks were presented within the context of a simulated work-task situation. We investigated the relative utility of features identified by participants (web page content, structure and quality), and how the importance of these features is affected by the type of information-seeking task performed and the stage of the search. The results of this study provide a set of criteria used by searchers to decide about the utility of web pages for different types of tasks. Such criteria can have implications for the design of systems that use or recommend web pages

Strategies and challenges to facilitate situated learning in virtual worlds post-Second Life

    Get PDF
Virtual worlds can establish a stimulating environment to support a situated learning approach in which students simulate a task within a safe environment. While in previous years Second Life played a major role in providing such a virtual environment, there are now more and more alternative—often OpenSim-based—solutions deployed within the educational community. By drawing parallels to social networks, we discuss two aspects: how to link individually hosted virtual worlds together in order to implement context for immersion and how to identify and avoid “fake” avatars so people behind these avatars can be held accountable for their actions

A CGE Model for Assessing the Economy-Wide Effects of Removing the Cooking Oil Subsidy in Malaysia

    Get PDF
The Malaysian government eliminated the subsidy on cooking oil from January 2017 in its efforts to improve market efficiency and curb the smuggling of the product into neighboring countries. Implementing this policy will impact the economy through changes in relative prices and improvements in resource allocation. This article simulates the economy-wide effects of this policy reform using a computable general equilibrium model based on the country’s latest input-output tables (2015) under short and long-run scenarios. The simulation results show that the subsidy removal substantially increases the price of cooking oil which in turn affects the prices of other food and agricultural products and causes a mild contraction in the overall economy. The results also show that in addition to the impact on the cooking oil sector, the oil palm sector is also somewhat affected by this policy as upstream linkages are taken into account in both the model and database. The Hicksian welfare criterion shows that household welfare decreases marginally as a result of the subsidy removal

Abstract We present a new parameter-free algorithm for online linear optimization over any Hilbert space. It is theoretically optimal, with regret guarantees as good as with the best possible learning rate. The algorithm is simple and easy to implement. The analysis is given via the adversarial coin-betting game, Kelly betting and the Krichevsky-Trofimov estimator. Applications to obtain parameter-free convex optimization and machine learning algorithms are shown

Says who? Automatic text-based content analysis of television news

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT We perform an automatic analysis of television news programs, based on the closed captions that accompany them. Specifically, we collect all the news broadcasted in over 140 television channels in the US during a period of six months. We start by segmenting, processing, and annotating the closed captions automatically. Next, we focus on the analysis of their linguistic style and on mentions of people using NLP methods. We present a series of key insights about news providers, people in the news, and we discuss the biases that can be uncovered by automatic means. These insights are contrasted by looking at the data from multiple points of view, including qualitative assessment
