Woodcarving is part and parcel of vernacular Malay architecture and craft in Peninsular Malaysia and Southern Thailand. Timber architecture, boats and canoes, hilts and sheath of weapons, musical instrument and utensils are adorned with carving motifs of flora, calligraphy, geometry, fauna and cosmic features Apart from the knowledge and skills on woodcarving, selection of timber species is a determining factor in the making of the carving. This study investigates the criteria used by Malay craftsmen in selecting timber species for their carvings. The method of investigation include (1) review of measured drawing reports of timber building from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia archive, (2) interview with woodcarvers on small and intricate crafts, (3) interview with caretakers or residents of the buildings, and (4) literature review on timber species from Forest Research Institute Malaysia archive on timber classification and its characteristics. Information from the drawings, interviews and literature are triangulated to obtain the types of carved components in architecture and crafts, types of timber species and reasons of their selection. It is found that the Malay woodcarvers observed three factors in selecting timber species for their carvings. The factors are availability of timber, physical characteristics and durability, and craftsmen’s spiritual beliefs towards the timber species. Most carved building components are made from heavy hardwood species such as cengal and merbau because of their strength and durability and availability of sawn timber in large volumes. Motifs of flora, calligraphy, geometry, fauna and cosmic features are depicted on to the components as well as to crafts such as weapons, utensils, tools and furniture. However timber species with fine grains and lustrous surfaces and believed to possess strong spirit such as kemuning and kenaung are carved into hilts of weapons. These criteria address the intrinsic knowledge of the woodcarvers upon the beauty and meaning of tropical timbers and hence in the identity of the carving

The global crisis following the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic has had an impact on the teaching and learning process (PdP). The main problem with PdP during the Covid-19 epidemic was the limitation in conducting face-to-face activities in the classroom. Therefore, a learning aid is needed to enable PdP to run optimally even though there is no face-to-face interaction between teachers and students. The research contribution is to highlight the application of Augmented Reality to support distance learning in the Covid-19 epidemic situation, specializing in Wood Carving Art for the subject of Visual Arts Education Form 4. The AR Wood Carving Art mobile application uses the ADDIE design model based on five phases, namely Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Testing. The AR Wood Carving Art mobile application is evaluated based on its usefulness. The AR Wood Carving Art mobile application was evaluated among 27 students from 4 of SMK Pasir Gudang (Johor, Malaysia) and registered to Visual Arts. Based on the result, 80% of respondents strongly agree that the AR Wood Craving Art mobile application help respondents be more effective. It helps users to be more productive and giving ideas to users to be creative and innovative. One hundred percent of respondents strongly agree that the AR Wood Craving Art mobile application makes things that users want to achieve easier to do, and the AR Wood Craving Art mobile application does what users want. Eighty percent of respondents strongly agree that the AR Wood Craving Art application is useful and the application saves time when users use it. Therefore, the AR Wood Craving Art application is effectively used in learning which makes users more productive, creative, and innovative. In addition, the AR Wood Craving Art mobile application makes it easy for users to understand wood carving topics in visual arts subjects, and users can carry out educational and teaching activities like in a classroom

This study aims to investigate the physical and visual properties of the traditional Malay wood carving as cultural heritage component, which has been inherited from the old generation of carvers since 16th century. The objectives of this study are: 1) to identify the tangible and intangible attributes of the wood carving components that denote its cultural heritage value, and 2) to analyse the characteristics and physical properties of the wood components. Personal interview with Malay carvers, field observation, visual and laboratory analyses were conducted to determine the physical and chemical properties of the selected wood carving components from Terengganu and Kelantan. The result of analyses characterized the traditional concepts of carving into transfiguration, transformation, translation, transference, transcendence, transmission, translocation, and transition. Also, the result of laboratory test shows that different types of wood especially Meranti and Cengal were used for the fabrication of carving components. The study found that Cengal-based wood carving has distinctive physical and chemical characteristics thus distinguished it from those found in Meranti-based wood carving. The study suggests the visual and physical characteristics of the carving components characterize their heritage values. These characteristics determine the distinctiveness of the carved components that has become the key determinants to their heritage attributes resulting to significant pieces of work. Future research could be conducted to determine the suitable method for preserving the wood carving as cultural heritage. The Malay traditional wood carving need to be protected to ensure its cultural heritage values are maintained in good condition
