    Control of chaos in nonlinear circuits and systems

    Nonlinear circuits and systems, such as electronic circuits (Chapter 5), power converters (Chapter 6), human brains (Chapter 7), phase lock loops (Chapter 8), sigma delta modulators (Chapter 9), etc, are found almost everywhere. Understanding nonlinear behaviours as well as control of these circuits and systems are important for real practical engineering applications. Control theories for linear circuits and systems are well developed and almost complete. However, different nonlinear circuits and systems could exhibit very different behaviours. Hence, it is difficult to unify a general control theory for general nonlinear circuits and systems. Up to now, control theories for nonlinear circuits and systems are still very limited. The objective of this book is to review the state of the art chaos control methods for some common nonlinear circuits and systems, such as those listed in the above, and stimulate further research and development in chaos control for nonlinear circuits and systems. This book consists of three parts. The first part of the book consists of reviews on general chaos control methods. In particular, a time-delayed approach written by H. Huang and G. Feng is reviewed in Chapter 1. A master slave synchronization problem for chaotic Lur’e systems is considered. A delay independent and delay dependent synchronization criteria are derived based on the H performance. The design of the time delayed feedback controller can be accomplished by means of the feasibility of linear matrix inequalities. In Chapter 2, a fuzzy model based approach written by H.K. Lam and F.H.F. Leung is reviewed. The synchronization of chaotic systems subject to parameter uncertainties is considered. A chaotic system is first represented by the fuzzy model. A switching controller is then employed to synchronize the systems. The stability conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities are derived based on the Lyapunov stability theory. The tracking performance and parameter design of the controller are formulated as a generalized eigenvalue minimization problem which is solved numerically via some convex programming techniques. In Chapter 3, a sliding mode control approach written by Y. Feng and X. Yu is reviewed. Three kinds of sliding mode control methods, traditional sliding mode control, terminal sliding mode control and non-singular terminal sliding mode control, are employed for the control of a chaotic system to realize two different control objectives, namely to force the system states to converge to zero or to track desired trajectories. Observer based chaos synchronizations for chaotic systems with single nonlinearity and multi-nonlinearities are also presented. In Chapter 4, an optimal control approach written by C.Z. Wu, C.M. Liu, K.L. Teo and Q.X. Shao is reviewed. Systems with nonparametric regression with jump points are considered. The rough locations of all the possible jump points are identified using existing kernel methods. A smooth spline function is used to approximate each segment of the regression function. A time scaling transformation is derived so as to map the undecided jump points to fixed points. The approximation problem is formulated as an optimization problem and solved via existing optimization tools. The second part of the book consists of reviews on general chaos controls for continuous-time systems. In particular, chaos controls for Chua’s circuits written by L.A.B. Tôrres, L.A. Aguirre, R.M. Palhares and E.M.A.M. Mendes are discussed in Chapter 5. An inductorless Chua’s circuit realization is presented, as well as some practical issues, such as data analysis, mathematical modelling and dynamical characterization, are discussed. The tradeoff among the control objective, the control energy and the model complexity is derived. In Chapter 6, chaos controls for pulse width modulation current mode single phase H-bridge inverters written by B. Robert, M. Feki and H.H.C. Iu are discussed. A time delayed feedback controller is used in conjunction with the proportional controller in its simple form as well as in its extended form to stabilize the desired periodic orbit for larger values of the proportional controller gain. This method is very robust and easy to implement. In Chapter 7, chaos controls for epileptiform bursting in the brain written by M.W. Slutzky, P. Cvitanovic and D.J. Mogul are discussed. Chaos analysis and chaos control algorithms for manipulating the seizure like behaviour in a brain slice model are discussed. The techniques provide a nonlinear control pathway for terminating or potentially preventing epileptic seizures in the whole brain. The third part of the book consists of reviews on general chaos controls for discrete-time systems. In particular, chaos controls for phase lock loops written by A.M. Harb and B.A. Harb are discussed in Chapter 8. A nonlinear controller based on the theory of backstepping is designed so that the phase lock loops will not be out of lock. Also, the phase lock loops will not exhibit Hopf bifurcation and chaotic behaviours. In Chapter 9, chaos controls for sigma delta modulators written by B.W.K. Ling, C.Y.F. Ho and J.D. Reiss are discussed. A fuzzy impulsive control approach is employed for the control of the sigma delta modulators. The local stability criterion and the condition for the occurrence of limit cycle behaviours are derived. Based on the derived conditions, a fuzzy impulsive control law is formulated so that the occurrence of the limit cycle behaviours, the effect of the audio clicks and the distance between the state vectors and an invariant set are minimized supposing that the invariant set is nonempty. The state vectors can be bounded within any arbitrary nonempty region no matter what the input step size, the initial condition and the filter parameters are.     Data-driven techniques for the fault diagnosis of a wind turbine benchmark

    This paper deals with the fault diagnosis of wind turbines and investigates viable solutions to the problem of earlier fault detection and isolation. The design of the fault indicator, i.e., the fault estimate, involves data-driven approaches, as they can represent effective tools for coping with poor analytical knowledge of the system dynamics, together with noise and disturbances. In particular, the proposed data-driven solutions rely on fuzzy systems and neural networks that are used to describe the strongly nonlinear relationships between measurement and faults. The chosen architectures rely on nonlinear autoregressive models with exogenous input, as they can represent the dynamic evolution of the system along time. The developed fault diagnosis schemes are tested by means of a high-fidelity benchmark model that simulates the normal and the faulty behaviour of a wind turbine. The achieved performances are also compared with those of other model-based strategies from the related literature.     Robust approach to object recognition through fuzzy clustering and hough transform based methods

    Object detection from two dimensional intensity images as well as three dimensional range images is considered. The emphasis is on the robust detection of shapes such as cylinders, spheres, cones, and planar surfaces, typically found in mechanical and manufacturing engineering applications. Based on the analyses of different HT methods, a novel method, called the Fast Randomized Hough Transform (FRHT) is proposed. The key idea of FRHT is to divide the original image into multiple regions and apply random sampling method to map data points in the image space into the parameter space or feature space, then obtain the parameters of true clusters. This results in the following characteristics, which are highly desirable in any method: high computation speed, low memory requirement, high result resolution and infinite parameter space. This project also considers use of fuzzy clustering techniques, such as Fuzzy C Quadric Shells (FCQS) clustering algorithm but combines the concept of noise prototype to form the Noise FCQS clustering algorithm that is robust against noise. Then a novel integrated clustering algorithm combining the advantages of FRHT and NFCQS methods is proposed. It is shown to be a robust clustering algorithm having the distinct advantages such as: the number of clusters need not be known in advance, the results are initialization independent, the detection accuracy is greatly improved, and the computation speed is very fast. Recent concepts from robust statistics, such as least trimmed squares estimation (LTS), minimum volume ellipsoid estimator (MVE) and the generalized MVE are also utilized to form a new robust algorithm called the generalized LTS for Quadric Surfaces (GLTS-QS) algorithm is developed. The experimental results indicate that the clustering method combining the FRHT and the GLTS-QS can improve clustering performance. Moreover, a new cluster validity method for circular clusters is proposed by considering the distribution of the points on the circular edge. Different methods for the computation of distance of a point from a cluster boundary, a common issue in all the range image clustering algorithms, are also discussed. The performance of all these algorithms is tested using various real and synthetic range and intensity images. The application of the robust clustering methods to the experimental granular flow research is also included

    Digital Image-Based Frameworks for Monitoring and Controlling of Particulate Systems

    Particulate processes have been widely involved in various industries and most products in the chemical industry today are manufactured as particulates. Previous research and practise illustrate that the final product quality can be influenced by particle properties such as size and shape which are related to operating conditions. Online characterization of these particles is an important step for maintaining desired product quality in particulate processes. Image-based characterization method for the purpose of monitoring and control particulate processes is very promising and attractive. The development of a digital image-based framework, in the context of this research, can be envisioned in two parts. One is performing image analysis and designing advanced algorithms for segmentation and texture analysis. The other is formulating and implementing modern predictive tools to establish the correlations between the texture features and the particle characteristics. According to the extent of touching and overlapping between particles in images, two image analysis methods were developed and tested. For slight touching problems, image segmentation algorithms were developed by introducing Wavelet Transform de-noising and Fuzzy C-means Clustering detecting the touching regions, and by adopting the intensity and geometry characteristics of touching areas. Since individual particles can be identified through image segmentation, particle number, particle equivalent diameter, and size distribution were used as the features. For severe touching and overlapping problems, texture analysis was carried out through the estimation of wavelet energy signature and fractal dimension based on wavelet decomposition on the objects. Predictive models for monitoring and control for particulate processes were formulated and implemented. Building on the feature extraction properties of the wavelet decomposition, a projection technique such as principal component analysis (PCA) was used to detect off-specification conditions which generate particle mean size deviates the target value. Furthermore, linear and nonlinear predictive models based on partial least squares (PLS) and artificial neural networks (ANN) were formulated, implemented and tested on an experimental facility to predict particle characteristics (mean size and standard deviation) from the image texture analysis

    Práce se zabývá metodami pro testování lineárních analogových obvodů v kmitočtové oblasti. Cílem je navrhnout efektivní metody pro automatické generování testovacího plánu. Snížením počtu měření a výpočetní náročnosti lze výrazně snížit náklady za testování. Práce se zabývá multifrekveční parametrickou poruchovou analýzou, která byla plně implementována do programu Matlab. Vhodnou volbou testovacích kmitočtů lze potlačit chyby měření a chyby způsobené výrobními tolerancemi obvodových prvků. Navržené metody pro optimální volbu kmitočtů byly statisticky ověřeny metodou MonteCarlo. Pro zvýšení přesnosti a snížení výpočetní náročnosti poruchové analýzy byly vyvinuty postupy založené na metodě nejmenších čtverců a přibližné symbolické analýze.The thesis deals with methods for testing of linear analog circuits in the frequency domain. The goal is to develop new efficient methods for automatic test plan generation. To reduce test costs a minimum number of measurements as well as less computational demands are the fundamental aims. The thesis is focused on the multi-frequency parametric fault diagnosis which was fully implemented in the Matlab program. The fundamental problem consists in selection of test frequencies which can reduce the influences of measurement errors and errors caused by tolerances of well-working components. The proposed methods for test frequency selection were statistically verified by the MonteCarlo method. To improve the accuracy and reduce the computational complexity of fault diagnosis, the methods based on least-square techniques and approximate symbolic analysis were presented.
