Using formal methods to develop WS-BPEL applications
In recent years, WS-BPEL has become a de facto standard language for orchestration of Web Services. However, there are still some well-known difficulties that make programming
in WS-BPEL a tricky task. In this paper, we firstly point out major loose points of the WS-BPEL specification by means of many examples, some of which are also exploited
to test and compare the behaviour of three of the most known freely available WS-BPEL engines. We show that, as a matter of fact, these engines implement different
semantics, which undermines portability of WS-BPEL programs over different platforms. Then we introduce Blite, a prototypical orchestration language equipped with a formal
operational semantics, which is closely inspired by, but simpler than, WS-BPEL. Indeed, Blite is designed around some of WS-BPEL distinctive features like partner links, process termination, message correlation, long-running business transactions and compensation handlers. Finally, we present BliteC, a software tool supporting a rapid and easy development of WS-BPEL applications via translation of service orchestrations written in Blite into executable WS-BPEL programs. We illustrate our approach by means of a running example borrowed from the official specification of WS-BPEL

Social approach in preschool children with Williams syndrome: The role of the face.
Background Indiscriminate social approach behaviour is a salient aspect of the Williams syndrome (WS) behavioural phenotype. The present study examines approach behaviour in preschoolers with WS and evaluates the role of the face in WS social approach behaviour. Method Ten preschoolers with WS (aged 3-6 years) and two groups of typically developing children, matched to the WS group on chronological or mental age, participated in an observed play session. The play session incorporated social and non-social components including two components that assessed approach behaviour towards strangers, one in which the stranger’s face could be seen and one in which the stranger’s face was covered. Results In response to the non-social aspects of the play session, the WS group behaved similarly to both control groups. In contrast, the preschoolers with WS were significantly more willing than either control group to engage with a stranger, even when the stranger’s face could not be seen. Conclusion The findings challenge the hypothesis that an unusual attraction to the face directly motivates social approach behaviour in individuals with WS
Evidence for Two Different Solid Phases of Two Dimensional Electrons in High Magnetic Fields
We have performed RF spectroscopy on very high quality two dimensional
electron systems in the high magnetic field insulating phase, usually
associated with a Wigner solid (WS) pinned by disorder. We have found two
different resonances in the frequency dependent real diagonal conductivity
spectrum and we interpret them as coming from \textit{two} different pinned
solid phases (labeled as "WS-A" and "WS-B"). The resonance of WS-A is
observable for Landau level filling 2/9 (but absent around the
=1/5 fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE)); it then \textit{crosses over}
for 0.18 to the different WS-B resonance which dominates the spectrum
at 0.125. Moreover, WS-A resonance is found to show dispersion with
respect to the size of transmission line, indicating that WS-A has a large
correlation length (exceeding 100 m); in contrast no such behavior
is found for WS-B. We suggest that quantum correlations such as those
responsible for FQHE may play an important role in giving rise to such

Interpretation of ambiguous situations: evidence for a dissociation between social and physical threat in Williams syndrome
There is increasing evidence that Williams syndrome (WS) is associated with elevated anxiety that is non-social in nature, including generalised anxiety and fears. To date very little research has examined the cognitive processes associated with this anxiety. In the present research, attentional bias for non-social threatening images in WS was examined using a dot-probe paradigm. Participants were 16 individuals with WS aged between 13 and 34 years and two groups of typically developing controls matched to the WS group on chronological age and attentional control ability respectively. The WS group exhibited a significant attention bias towards threatening images. In contrast, no bias was found for group matched on attentional control and a slight bias away from threat was found in the chronological age matched group. The results are contrasted with recent findings suggesting that individuals with WS do not show an attention bias for threatening faces and discussed in relation to neuroimaging research showing elevated amygdala activation in response to threatening non-social scenes in WS
Accelerated epigenetic aging in Werner syndrome.
Individuals suffering from Werner syndrome (WS) exhibit many clinical signs of accelerated aging. While the underlying constitutional mutation leads to accelerated rates of DNA damage, it is not yet known whether WS is also associated with an increased epigenetic age according to a DNA methylation based biomarker of aging (the "Epigenetic Clock"). Using whole blood methylation data from 18 WS cases and 18 age matched controls, we find that WS is associated with increased extrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (p=0.0072) and intrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (p=0.04), the latter of which is independent of age-related changes in the composition of peripheral blood cells. A multivariate model analysis reveals that WS is associated with an increase in DNA methylation age (on average 6.4 years, p=0.011) even after adjusting for chronological age, gender, and blood cell counts. Further, WS might be associated with a reduction in naïve CD8+ T cells (p=0.025) according to imputed measures of blood cell counts. Overall, this study shows that WS is associated with an increased epigenetic age of blood cells which is independent of changes in blood cell composition. The extent to which this alteration is a cause or effect of WS disease phenotypes remains unknown
Graphene-WS heterostructures for tunable spin injection and spin transport
We report the first measurements of spin injection in to graphene through a
20 nm thick tungsten disulphide (WS) layer, along with a modified spin
relaxation time ({\tau}s) in graphene in the WS environment, via spin-valve
and Hanle spin-precession measurements, respectively. First, during the
spin-injection into graphene through a WS-graphene interface, we can tune
the interface resistance at different current bias and modify the spin
injection efficiency, in a correlation with the conductivity-mismatch theory.
Temperature assisted tunneling is identified as a dominant mechanism for the
charge transport across the interface. Second, we measure the spin transport in
graphene, underneath the WS crystal and observe a significant reduction in
the {\tau}s down to 17 ps in graphene in the WS covered region, compared to
that in its pristine state. The reduced {\tau}s indicates the WS-proximity
induced additional dephasing of the spins in graphene.Comment: 7 Pages, 6 figure

Perceptual grouping ability in Williams syndrome: Evidence for deviant patterns of performance
Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder. At a cognitive level, this population display poor visuo-spatial cognition when compared to verbal ability. Within the visuo-spatial domain, it is now accepted that individuals with WS are able to perceive both local and global aspects of an image, albeit at a low level. The present study examines the manner in which local elements are grouped into a global whole in WS. Fifteen individuals with WS and 15 typically developing controls, matched for non-verbal ability, were presented with a matrix of local elements and asked whether these elements were perceptually grouped horizontally or vertically. The WS group were at the same level as the control group when grouping by luminance, closure, and alignment. However, their ability to group by shape, orientation and proximity was significantly poorer than controls. This unusual profile of grouping abilities in WS suggests that these individuals do not form a global percept in a typical manner
