    The evolution of the car-making industry

    Mass-production, cars, pollution – they all have long become well known and well connected phenomena of the modern life. Nowadays the people can also add to the list such items like awareness, scientific approach, long-term thinking, and environmental responsibility. They are surrounded by a multitude of consumer goods, most of which are produced in a scientific manner, and all of which will more sooner than later end up in the garbage. Cars are the most noticeable – both by size and by numbers – and also the most expensive of all the mass products in people’s view. For many of them they are a clear target for reprimand and regulation, and, as a result, the automotive industry is being increasingly brought under bureaucratic control, together with its whole supplier and distributor network. The author started writing this article in an attempt to place the above process under scrutiny, because it is his firm belief that similar measures, similar tough governmental control will inevitably spill over to other industries, which at the moment are producing more inconspicuous, but still polluting products. The present paper shows the relationship between car-making, supply chain management and the efforts of public administration to protect the environment – a connection with clear practical implications

    Hamiltonian model for coupled surface and internal waves in the presence of currents

    We examine a two dimensional fluid system consisting of a lower medium bounded underneath by a flatbed and an upper medium with a free surface. The two media are separated by a free common interface. The gravity driven surface and internal water waves (at the common interface between the media) in the presence of a depth-dependent current are studied under certain physical assumptions. Both media are considered incompressible and with prescribed vorticities. Using the Hamiltonian approach the Hamiltonian of the system is constructed in terms of 'wave' variables and the equations of motion are calculated. The resultant equations of motion are then analysed to show that wave-current interaction is influenced only by the current profile in the 'strips' adjacent to the surface and the interface.     On the predictive content of nonlinear transformations of lagged autoregression residuals and time series observations

    This study focuses on the question whether nonlinear transformation of lagged time series values and residuals are able to systematically improve the average forecasting performance of simple Autoregressive models. Furthermore it investigates the potential superior forecasting results of a nonlinear Threshold model. For this reason, a large-scale comparison over almost 400 time series which span from 1996:3 up to 2008:12 (production indices, price indices, unemployment rates, exchange rates, money supply) from 10 European countries is made. The average forecasting performance is appraised by means of Mean Group statistics and simple t-tests. Autoregressive models are extended by transformed first lags of residuals and time series values. Whereas additional transformation of lagged time series values are able to reduce the ex-ante forecast uncertainty and provide a better directional accuracy, transformations of lagged residuals also lead to smaller forecast errors. Furthermore, the nonlinear Threshold model is able to capture certain type of economic behavior in the data and provides superior forecasting results than a simple Autoregressive model.
