THE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN COMPREHENDING THE ADVERTISEMENT TEXTS AT THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SMK TARUNA MANDIRI PEKANBARU
Reading, in general, is an activity which is incredibly important in a learning
process. This is because functional knowledge and vital information for our study and life
can be gained. In learning English, reading is also one of the skills that a learner must
possess. But many students are not involved in reading. When they are tested, many of
them can not pass the test. It also can be seen that the libraries in school have few visitors.
Students prefer going to canteen to going to library. Based on this observation, the writer
proposes that many students do not like reading, mainly reading English texts, because the
English texts are typically difficult to understand by the students. They need to translate it
into Indonesian before getting the idea of the text, whereas one of the materials in reading
at vocational high school is reading the advertisement texts. It can be seen for reading
materials include: Reading charts, Reading tables, Reading schedules, Reading
advertisement. Meanwhile, the worth of learning the advertisement for the students of
Vocational High School is to train students’ ability in reading skill. At the final
examination, items scope and materials include listening and reading. Therefore, reading
the advertisement texts is essential because it is vital skill for the students of SMK
(Vocational High School) tested in the national examination. In this reason, the writer is
interested to investigate why some of the students are still difficult to comprehend the
advertisement texts.
The subject of the study is all the second year students of SMK Taruna Mandiri
Pekanbaru in the academic year 2008/2009; the total number is 329 students. This study
taken by using total random sampling, so the sample is 10% of 329 students, namely 40
students whereas the object of this study is the students’ ability in comprehending the
advertisement texts.
The data is gathered by documentation technique which is used to get information about the
condition of researches location, while questionnaire is used to find out about the factors
influence the students’ ability in comprehending the advertisement texts. The major
technique of this research is by distributing a multiple choice test to the students. In
analyzing the data, the writer uses qualitative description technique by percentage, as
formulated bellow:
F
P
%100×=
N
In order to know the students’ category in comprehending the advertisement texts
whether it is very good, good, enough, less and very fail as follows:
X
M
%100×=
N
In order to analyze the mean of the students’ score in comprehending the
advertisement texts, the following formula is used:
M
∑
N
X
=
Based on the data analysis, it can be seen that the students’ ability in
comprehending the advertisement texts at the second year of SMK Taruna Mandiri
Pekanbaru is enough category.
Some factors that influence the students’ ability in comprehending the
advertisement texts are as follows:
1. The students do not read English text before learning reading.
2. The students are interested in the advertisement texts because they like what the
advertisement texts offer.
3. The students do not try to improve their reading advertisement text’s score by studying
hard.
4. The students do not interrupt and ask the teacher about the material when they do not
understand it yet.
2. The students do not use their spare time to read a lot of English texts, such as articles,
magazines, and newspapers
A Shared Task on Bandit Learning for Machine Translation
We introduce and describe the results of a novel shared task on bandit
learning for machine translation. The task was organized jointly by Amazon and
Heidelberg University for the first time at the Second Conference on Machine
Translation (WMT 2017). The goal of the task is to encourage research on
learning machine translation from weak user feedback instead of human
references or post-edits. On each of a sequence of rounds, a machine
translation system is required to propose a translation for an input, and
receives a real-valued estimate of the quality of the proposed translation for
learning. This paper describes the shared task's learning and evaluation setup,
using services hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), the data and evaluation
metrics, and the results of various machine translation architectures and
learning protocols.Comment: Conference on Machine Translation (WMT) 201
Professor Text: University Fundraising Optimization
University fundraising campaigns are a unique type of cause-related marketing with its own challenges and opportunities. Campaigns like this typically last an extended period, such as five or more years, and goals exist beyond the dollar amount raised. These supplemental goals, such as awareness among potential future donators or brand reputation within the local community, are important to consider and strategize. There can also be unique limitations, such as requiring advertising specifically on recent large gifts or endowment programs. This research explores how machine learning techniques such as natural language processing can be used to optimize a fundraising campaign strategy, execution, and overall performance
Using association rule mining to enrich semantic concepts for video retrieval
In order to achieve true content-based information retrieval on video we should analyse and index video with
high-level semantic concepts in addition to using user-generated tags and structured metadata like title, date,
etc. However the range of such high-level semantic concepts, detected either manually or automatically,
usually limited compared to the richness of information content in video and the potential vocabulary of
available concepts for indexing. Even though there is work to improve the performance of individual concept
classifiers, we should strive to make the best use of whatever partial sets of semantic concept occurrences
are available to us. We describe in this paper our method for using association rule mining to automatically
enrich the representation of video content through a set of semantic concepts based on concept co-occurrence
patterns. We describe our experiments on the TRECVid 2005 video corpus annotated with the 449 concepts
of the LSCOM ontology. The evaluation of our results shows the usefulness of our approach
Analyzing the drivers of customer satisfaction via social media
Social media became a great influence force during the last decade. Active social media user population increased with the new generations. Thus, data started to accumulate in tremendous amounts. Data accumulated through social media offers an opportunity to reach valuable insights and support business decisions. The aim of this project is to understand the drivers of customer satisfaction by public sentiments on Twitter towards a financial institution. Data was extracted from the most popular microblogging platform Twitter and sentiment analysis was performed. The unstructured data was classified by their sentiments with a lexicon-based model and a machine learning based model. The outcome of this study showed machine learning based model successfully overcame the language specific problems and was able to make better predictions where lexicon-based model struggled. Further analysis was performed on the extreme daily average sentiment scores to match these days with prominent events. The results showed that the public sentiment on Twitter is driven by three main themes; complaints related to services, advertisement campaigns, and influencers’ impact.
Neology of Arabic in Indonesia
The development of Arabic which is influenced other language and culture is very interesting to be discussed, because Arabs themselves are not able to give a name to something that does not exist in their nature and their thought, such as naming cases, and terms that come from language and nature of thought of Indonesians. Many of these new words and terms have been featured in one of the Arabic language magazines which is Alo Indonesia. This study aims to find out how the names and terms in Indonesian discourse influenced Arabic and the problems that arise in the process of producing words in the magazine. This research is literature research that used descriptive methods, namely describing the data by concerning to how the use of new Arabic words and terms in Alo Indonesia magazine. The data collection method is done by using the “note-taking” technique which is then collected in the data card. To answer the two main problems above, the writer used Ibrahim Murad's theory of neology. The findings of this study shows that according to five theories by Ibrahim Murad, Alo Indonesia magazine uses more semantic neology theory (al-Taulĩd al-Dalalĩ) and loan neology (al-Taulĩd bi al-Iqtirād). The biggest problem in the transliteration process from Indonesian letters into Arabic is that not all vowels and consonants in Indonesian are also available simultaneously in Arabic, and so does the difficulty of finding the equivalent of idea in the expression of these two languages
CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges

A psychological approach in the usage of interests to motivate children to the learning of EFL in a public school of Nuevo León, Mexico.
The present work focuses on 10-year-old children from a public school of Nuevo León, Mexico that have difficulties in the learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and making lesson plans’ adaptations including the students’ interests. The general objective is to examine the relationship between interests and learning of children who show difficulties in the learning process of EFL. The participants in this study are 29 children from a 5th grade primary public school who study English, 2 selected students, one English instructor and one practitioner researcher. The instruments used are based on the concept of triangulation, and the data collection tools are
observation forms, interviews, questionnaires about interests and student work. Data analysis from a questionnaire about interests was performed and the main interest categories found were physical activities and videogames. These categories are considered as the
thematic content to be used in order to adapt the lesson plans of the EFL classes. The conclusions from the analysis of the students' behaviors and participation during the EFL classes are that the students did not show an improvement during the first class even though it included elements of interest to them, but that changed in the second and third classes. In a scale from 0 to 20 points, it can be observed quantitatively that S1 incremented his participation from 8 in the first class to 15 in the third class, and S2 also incremented his participation from 12 in the first class to 17 in the third class
