A FRAMEWORK FOR REDUCING THE ADVERSE EFFECTS OF EXTREME HEAT AMONG MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH HOME VISITATION PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS

Extreme heat events are the leading cause of weather-related mortality in the United States. Age, health status, occupation and the built environment are all factors that increase heat related illness and mortality risks Of particular concern are the adverse effects of extreme heat exposure on vulnerable maternal-child health populations: pregnant and postpartum people, infants and young children. Despite the growing evidence for heat health risks among this population, there are currently no interventions addressing risk or disparities for risk through the US Department of Health and Humans Services Maternal Child Health Bureau. This paper explores the use of Healthy People 2020 MAP-IT as the framework for preventing, mitigating and responding to heat health risks among Maternal-Child Health Visitation participants through stakeholder coalition building. Toward a Community-Centric Approach to Address School Discipline Disparity

What you are engaging is more than a dissertation, but a dissertation in practice. It is a dissertation in community-centered practice for educational leadership. This is an agenda driven by the need to improve a problem of education practice that is a grave matter of social injustice. This is a response to the persistent call for educational leadership to be community work, to be community-engaged, as community-centric leadership (centered in the community and central to the needs of the marginalized). The agenda is designed to deliver site-specific examples of problems of practice occurring in school settings. Site-specific examples are demonstrated through auto-ethnographic reports and critical race counter-narratives from the worldview of the author of this agenda. I am a community-centric leader who engages the work as Black Activist Mothering, a perspective that is argued in this dissertation to be a unique and greatly needed vantage point. The problem of how race is involved with the ways in which the practices of suspensions and expulsions are enacted in school settings has become a US Department of Justice imperative; as most school districts in the country stand in violation of the civil rights of its students. The urgency to address this problem in ways that are libratory, emancipatory and transformative, is driven by the need to generate improvements in (a) educational leadership practice; and (b) the education research-practice infrastructure. The relationship of race and discipline disparity is utilized through this agenda to illustrate how knowing is not always enough to transform practices; even when the practice has demonstrated in the research to cause harm both disproportionately and at a disparate rate. And often, deeper, and more critical methods are called upon to discover responses to problems of practice within the context of traditional and nontraditional school settings

Educating the Net Generation

Information needs and habits of unaffiliated knowledge workers in the United Kingdom

The aim of this thesis is to analyse difficulties facing researchers excluded from results of mainstream academic research or corporate R&D, and offer recommendations on how they (unaffiliated knowledge workers or UKWs) can be integrated into future scientific activity. It also investigates the contextual aspect of whether science communication itself (science, technology, engineering and medicine or STEM) has become dysfunctional. This arises from claims that barriers prevent current stakeholders reaching into the professions, SMEs and citizen scientists - all parts of the UKW sector - with formal research publications. However, these barriers are now being breached through the combined effects of technological developments, social adaptation, administrative/legal changes and adoption of radical commercial/business models. This is leading to a migration from a print culture through a hybrid publications system to a fully digital environment where information needs will be met by different processes and procedures. The conclusion is that a paradigm shift is underway. The existing differences between STEM sectors - publishers, librarians, funders, intermediaries - over operational issues is preventing longer-term threats being addressed. The recommendation is that strategic delphic studies be undertaken at national and industry levels to provide alternative visions for STEM publishing, to support a smooth transition to a digital information economy. Included among these studies is the need to incorporate knowledge workers within the research system to produce a broader, healthier and more sustainable market for STEM. There is also a moral issue facing STEM - whether migration to an open, free and democratic system for creating information as a public utility, in line with Internet culture, can be reconciled with the drive to generate revenues and profits to sustain the commercial basis of the publishing industry; whether STEM in future should be liberated and made a ‘free’ utility

Analytical review of the library of the future

This is the report of a project supported by the Council on Library Resources. The four project objectives are: 1. To identify and retrieve published literature on the library of the future. 2. To formulate document surrogates for this literature and add them to a computerized database. 3. To generate an analytical bibliography of published library of the future literature. And 4.
